"March Marriage - The home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ames, of Codrington, was the scene of a hightly interesting even on Thrusday, the 5th., inst., when their youngest daughter, F. Winnifred, was united in marriage to Mr. W. W. Weaver, of Trenton. It was the advaned morning of an ideal winter day when numerous relatives from the surrounding country, and a goodly contingent from Trenton, gathered as guests of the occassion. Within the noon hour, at the music of the wedding march by Mrs. Goodfellow, of Mount Olivet, the bride, attired in point d'esprit over white silk, the veil being caught with sprays of white phlox, and bearing a shower bouquet of cream American beauty roses and smilax., was led to the alter by her father. She was attended by Miss Ora Weaver, sister of the groom, in cream silk organdie varied by pink roses and bearing a pink profusion of the same floral viariety as borne by the bride, while little Stella Massey, neice of the bride, as maid of honor, enhanced the event with a capacious basket of smilax and white and pink carnations. The groom was supported by his brother, M. B. Weaver, of Trenton. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. W. Coombe, under an evergreen arch embellished with lace and silvery decorations, subdued straings from the piano being continued througout the service. A sumptuous repast was then served in the dining room, also tastefully decorated. The gifts to the bride were numerous and beautiful. that of the groom to the bride was a broach of amethyst and pearl; to the bridesmaid a gold locket and chain and to the maid of honor, a pearl ring. The bride's going-away dress was navy-blue broadcloth with staw hat to match. The happy couple took the 5 p.m. train for Montreal, where some days will be spent in inspecting the attractions of the Canadian metropolis, after wich they will take up their residence in Trenton." from The Brighton Ensign, March 13, 1908, seen on microfilm at The Trenton Public Library, Dec. 28, 2001.5 Florence Winnifred Ames appeared on the census of 1921 at Murphy St., Trenton, Hastings Co., Ontario; Age 32 at 1921 Census: see William Weaver.1 She lived on 19 March 1937 at Murphy St., Trenton, Ontario; Per Death Notice of her husband, William Walter Weaver. James Ernest Ingle "Ernie" Ames was born on 11 April 1869 at Brighton Twp., Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Date Apr 11 1869 per 1901 Census.2 He appeared on the census of April 1871 at Brighton Twp, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Age 3 at 1871 Census: see Joseph Ames.3 He appeared on the census of April 1881 at Brighton Twp, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Age 12 at 1881 Census: see Joseph Ames.4 He Mabel Tolley recalls that James Ernest Ames was first married when he was in California (or the West?) and that his son Joseph as born in the States. He then divorced his wife and brought his son to Manitoba. before 1890 at California, U.S.A.. He Melvin Ames told me that J. Ernest Ames is said to have gone to California quite early - he said around 1880 but he was in Brighton Twp. age 12 at the 1881 Census. In the 1880's sometime, he went to Eden, Manitoba and worked for Jackson for a time. He exchanged letters with one of the Striker men who was involved in a gold mine in the Red Mountains of California. At some point J. Ernest Ames went to California and worked in the gold mine. Melvin says he stayed 10 years - the 1901 Census shows son Joseph immigrated in 1900 - so we must estimate that J. Ernest Ames went to California around 1890. In California he married Emma, his first wife. In 1894 they had a son Joseph Marion Ames, shown to be born in Boise, Idaho by his military records. Then they were divorced and J. Ernest Ames brought his son to Manitoba. When J. Ernest Ames came back to Manitoba he worked for Jackson again at Eden for a time and then tool the 1/4 to the west of his father near Birnie. William Prout lived on the farm to the north which explains his marriage to Maude Olivia Prout in 1902. circa 1890 at Gold Mine, Red Mountains, California, U.S.A..5 He married M. "Emma" ? before April 1891 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Emma appears for the first time on the Brighton Twp. 1891 Census with Joseph and Esther. James Ernest is NOT with them. It could be that Ernest and Emma were married before 1891 and lived with Joseph. Then, before April 1891, Ernest left for the U.S. where Emma joined him later and, in 1984, had Joseph M., as shown on the 1901 Census in Manitoba. Emma is not with them in Manitoba. See Divorce. James Ernest Ingle "Ernie" Ames "He was married twice. Divorced the first wife. They had one son Joseph (Killed World War I)" per letter from Elsie Dann Behrerdt, rec'd Feb 9, 2001 in 1900. He immigrated in 1900 to Riding Mountain, Manitoba; 1901 Manitoba Census shows that Ernest's son Joseph had come to Manitoba from the U.S. in 1900; that is also likely when the father Ernest came to Manitoba. It appears as if Ernest and his wife Emma were in the U. S. somewhere - he from before 1891 since he is not on the 1891 Brighton Twp. census - and she from after 1891 because she is. Emma must have died in the U.S. before Ernest moved to Manitoba where his parents and family had moved in 1889. Ernest married again in 1902. He and M. "Emma" ? were divorced in 1900; "He was married twice. Divorced the first wife. They had one son Joseph (Killed World War I)" per letter from Elsie Dann Behrerdt, rec'd Feb 9, 2001. James Ernest Ingle "Ernie" Ames appeared on the census of April 1901 at Riding Mountain, Manitoba; Age 31 at 1901 Census: see Joseph Ames.6 He lived in June 1901 at SW 28 17 15 W, Manitoba; First occupancy, June 1901, per Application for Patent. " from a letter regarding the Application for Entry of James Ernest Ames on the southwest quarter of Section 28, Township 17, Range 15, West of the Principal Meridian. seen on microfilm at The Manitoba Archives, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Dec 17, 2000. "He was married twice. Divorced the first wife. They had one son Joseph (Killed World War I)" per letter from Elsie Dann Behrerdt, rec'd Feb 9, 2001. James Ernest Ingle "Ernie" Ames lived on 4 October 1904 at SW 28 17 15 W, Manitoba; The Application for Patent includes a "Solemn Statement" regarding the state of the land in question. Seen on microfilm at The Manitoba Archives, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Dec 17, 2000. He lived on 7 March 1905 at SW 28 17 15 W, Birnie, Manitoba; Date of Patent: see Date of Entry. He lived on 24 July 1906 at 28 17 15 W, Sub-district #9, Birnie, Dauphin District, Manitoba; Residence per 1906 Census: Section 28, Township 17, Range 15, W Meridian.7 He appeared on the census of 24 July 1906 at Birnie, Dauphin District, Manitoba; Age 35 at 1906 Census: Ames, Ernest J., 35, b. Ont., married; Maude, 31, b. Ont., married; Stephen, 5, b. Manitoba; Frederick, 3, b. Manitoba; Beatrice, 1, b. Manitoba (1906 Western Census Online National Archices, Dauphin District, Sub-district #9, Page 17, Line 5, Birnie - 28 17 15 W.)7 He "Maud O. Ames & J. E. " letter in Crown Land Registry System, Manitoba Archives.
This letter suggest that James Ernest's second wife was named Maud O. on 16 June 1918 at NE 30 17 15 W, Birnie, Manitoba. He "Mr. H. Belford of Winnipeg is spending a week with old friends. He brought the news of the death "killed in action" of the eldest son of Mr. Ernest Ames of Man." from The Brighton Ensign, August 30, 1918, seen on microfilm at The Ontario Archives, Feb 7, 2001 on 30 August 1918 at Brighton, Ontario. He lived in 1923 at NW & NE 30 17 15 W, Birnie, Manitoba; Repromap Ltd., Dauphin: Shows E. Ames on both quarters of the section that Wellington and Joseph had homesteaded in 1907 and 1909 respectively. He Ernest moved from Manitoba to Kenora, Ontario sometime betwee 1923 and 1933. Mable Tolley beleives they moved when their house burned down.
Note: Fred's son Melvin was born in Kenora in 1929 - per Melvin Ames. circa 1929 at Kenora, Ontario.5 He lived on 31 March 1933 at Kenora, Ontario; " ... Ernest of Kenora, Ontario ... He died on 13 October 1954 at Brandon, Manitoba, at age 85; Mabel Tolley told me that James Ernest Ames, her grandfather, moved to Kenora when his house burned in Manitoba, then, when he was getting old, moved back to Manitoba where the family built a house for him. He died in Brandon, so Mabel thinks, and there may have been an issue of suicide - he may have hanged himself. She believes he is buried in Birnie or Riding Mountain. He A letter from the local Land Inspector to the Deprtment of the Interior shows that the quarters of this section had the following status at that time: SW and NE - reservered for timber; SW - apparently open; NW - entered 25th ultimo by W. ?. Ames. It appears as if there was much interest in these sections as several letters are on record from other claimants complaining that their applications have not been acted upon. It seems as if the Ames family had been on this land for some time and had done some work, at least enough to qualify for entry when the quarters came available due to timber status being changed by the government. The wording of letters suggests that others who did not have defacto possession of the land felt they would have done more and should have a chance at it. The other claimants seem very annoyed at the delay and feel they have been ignored by the goverment. Letters re other quarters show similar disatisfaction with what could not have been an easy process. on 9 May 1907 at Sec 30 17 15 W, Birnie, Manitoba. Mabel Tolley believes Wellington Ames went to Kenora with brother James Ernest around 1920. in 1927 at Kenora, Ontario. He lived in 1932 at Kenora, Ontario; "He came to this district in 1932 ... " per Obit. He was retired in 1951 at Public Works Department, Kenora, Ontario; " ... was employed with the Public Works Department of the Town of Kenora for 17 years retiring in 1951." Per Obituary of Wellington S. Ames. He "Dan: The obituary is imcomplete. Homer Ames lived in Kenora with his first wife Betty and children and they went their separate ways; Betty to Thunder Bay and Homer to Winnipeg (late in his life I think) and he met Helen and she became his new partner. We never met her and she knew very little about Homer's family I guess so the obit was incomplete. There were six boys in Annie and Wellington's family and four girls . The boys are Carmen, Homer, Milton, Delbert, Russell (the only one still living) and Gerald. The girls were Myrtle, Mary, Jean and Gertrude. I have to find out if there was one that died young.. I have just purchased a new computer and am on cable rather than the telepone line and can receive attachments . However I do have trouble retrieving them if I have to do more than just click on them. I also haven't learned how to use my burner so I can store this info on a disc and I have to learn how to file so I don't have buried files that I can't retrieve .
