Note: This marriage confirms the suggestion made earlier that George Henry Ames eventually remarried his first wife, Mary Ellen Aldrich. It looks like they did it in Windsor after she was divorced. "George H. Ames - George H. Ames, 85, died Sunday morning at 6 o'clock at his home, 20 Judson St. He had been ill two and a half years. Mr. Ames was born Aug 30, 1857 in Canada, the son of David and Mary King Ames, and attended schools in Canada. His wife, the former Mary Aldrich, preceeded him in death. He came to the United States when he was 21 years old and had lived in Pontiac 30 years, coming here from Romeo. Mr. Ames was a retired farmer. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Maude Renwick of Ypsilanti and Mrs. Alice Alger of Drayton Plains; two sons, Grover of Pontiac and Homer of Romeo; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Frazee and Mrs. Deborah Swanson, both of Pontiac and two brothers, David of White's Landing, O. and John of Travers City. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Huntoon Funeral home, the Rev. Rufus Traver officiating. Burial will be in Perry Mt. "March Marriage - The home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ames, of Codrington, was the scene of a hightly interesting even on Thrusday, the 5th., inst., when their youngest daughter, F. Winnifred, was united in marriage to Mr. W. W. Weaver, of Trenton. It was the advaned morning of an ideal winter day when numerous relatives from the surrounding country, and a goodly contingent from Trenton, gathered as guests of the occassion. Within the noon hour, at the music of the wedding march by Mrs. Goodfellow, of Mount Olivet, the bride, attired in point d'esprit over white silk, the veil being caught with sprays of white phlox, and bearing a shower bouquet of cream American beauty roses and smilax., was led to the alter by her father. She was attended by Miss Ora Weaver, sister of the groom, in cream silk organdie varied by pink roses and bearing a pink profusion of the same floral viariety as borne by the bride, while little Stella Massey, neice of the bride, as maid of honor, enhanced the event with a capacious basket of smilax and white and pink carnations. The groom was supported by his brother, M. B. Weaver, of Trenton. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. W. Coombe, under an evergreen arch embellished with lace and silvery decorations, subdued straings from the piano being continued througout the service. A sumptuous repast was then served in the dining room, also tastefully decorated. The gifts to the bride were numerous and beautiful. that of the groom to the bride was a broach of amethyst and pearl; to the bridesmaid a gold locket and chain and to the maid of honor, a pearl ring. The bride's going-away dress was navy-blue broadcloth with staw hat to match.      James Ernest Ingle "Ernie" Ames was born on 11 April 1869 at Brighton Twp., Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Date Apr 11 1869 per 1901 Census.² He appeared on the census of April 1871 at Brighton Twp, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Age 3 at 1871 Census: see Joseph Ames.³ He appeared on the census of April 1881 at Brighton Twp, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Age 12 at 1881 Census: see Joseph Ames.⁴ He Mabel Tolley recalls that James Ernest Ames was first married when he was in California (or the West?) and that his son Joseph as born in the States. He then divorced his wife and brought his son to Manitoba. before 1890 at California, U.S.A.. He Melvin Ames told me that J. Ernest Ames is said to have gone to California quite early - he said around 1880 but he was in Brighton Twp. age 12 at the 1881 Census. In the 1880's sometime, he went to Eden, Manitoba and worked for Jackson for a time. He exchanged letters with one of the Striker men who was involved in a gold mine in the Red Mountains of California. At some point J. Ernest Ames went to California and worked in the gold mine. Melvin says he stayed 10 years - the 1901 Census shows son Joseph immigrated in 1900 - so we must estimate that J. Ernest Ames went to California around 1890. In California he married Emma, his first wife. In 1894 they had a son Joseph Marion Ames, shown to be born in Boise, Idaho by his military records. Then they were divorced and J. Ernest Ames brought his son to Manitoba. When J. Ernest Ames came back to Manitoba he worked for Jackson again at Eden for a time and then tool the 1/4 to the west of his father near Birnie. William Prout lived on the farm to the north which explains his marriage to Maude Olivia Prout in 1902. circa 1890 at Gold Mine, Red Mountains, California, U.S.A..⁵ He married M. "Emma" ? before April 1891 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Emma appears for the first time on the Brighton Twp. 1891 Census with Joseph and Esther. James Ernest is NOT with them. It could be that Ernest and Emma were married before 1891 and lived with Joseph. Then, before April 1891, Ernest left for the U.S. where Emma joined him later and, in 1984, had Joseph M., as shown on the 1901 Census in Manitoba. Emma is not with them in Manitoba. See Divorce. He lived in 1923 at NW & NE 30 17 15 W, Birnie, Manitoba; Repromap Ltd., Dauphin: Shows E. Ames on both quarters of the section that Wellington and Joseph had homesteaded in 1907 and 1909 respectively. He Ernest moved from Manitoba to Kenora, Ontario sometime betwee 1923 and 1933. Mable Tolley beleives they moved when their house burned down.

It seems as if the Ames family had been on this land for some time and had done some work, at least enough to qualify for entry when the quarters came available due to timber status being changed by the government. The wording of letters suggests that others who did not have defacto possession of the land felt they would have done more and should have a chance at it. The other claimants seem very annoyed at the delay and feel they have been ignored by the goverment. Homer Ames lived in Kenora with his first wife Betty and children and they went their separate ways; Betty to Thunder Bay and Homer to Winnipeg (late in his life I think) and he met Helen and she became his new partner. We never met her and she knew very little about Homer's family I guess so the obit was incomplete. There were six boys in Annie and Wellington's family and four girls . The boys are Carmen, Homer, Milton, Delbert, Russell (the only one still living) and Gerald. The girls were Myrtle, Mary, Jean and Gertrude. I have to find out if there was one that died young..
