Johannes "John" Dingman

M, b. 5 March 1763, d. 8 May 1813
FatherJasper Dingman b. c 1743
Mother? ? b. c 1743
Johannes "John" Dingman was born on 5 March 1763 at Greenbush, Rensselaier Co., New York, U.S.A; John is shown to be a son of Jasper per IGI Record. Ancestry of Archie Dingman uses this line. I have moved John to Jasper because of this, in spite of the christening info for John's son Albertus with Albertus's (brother of Adam) wife Gerty present as witness. This could be John's uncle and aunt rather than parents.1,2 He married Catherine Shibley on 2 July 1785 at Kinderhook, Columbia Co., New York, U.S.A; Per IGI Record.2 Johannes "John" Dingman lived in 1787 at Ontario; "Our Ancestry; As given by Rev. G. J. Dingman who was born in Prince Edward County in 1826. On my father's side, both grandfather and grandmother were German and never spoke English. My father and all the family, while at home spoke German, at the same time mingling with others learned English. The old stock first settled near Albany, N.Y., and at the time of the Revolution, grandfather Dingman and Jacob Shibley, cousin of my grandmother, who was a Shibley, were the only one - married couples - who sided with George IV - remaining British & hence with others as U. E.'s came to Canada in 1787. The first contingent coming four years sooner, in 1784. On mother's side I think granfather Schmidt - Smith in time the name became - came likely with the Dingmans and Shibleys, and married in this country; - Mother's grandfather being an Irish Captain under George III - and mother's grandmother, a French lady from Paris, France; and as I never heard of any Roman Catholics in the family, was doubtless a Hugeunot... G. J. Dingman" per Burleigh Papers, Queen's University Archives, Kinston, Ontario, Aug. 3, 2004.3 He " ... John Dingman (March 5, 1763 - March 8, 1813), Loyalist soldier from the Black River near Port Plain, New York, who settled in Prince Edward County, Ontario (then part of Quebec). " from Prince Edward County Book, Ruth & Emerson Smart's Books, Jan 9 ,2004 circa 1790 at Prince Edward Co., Ontario.1 He immigrated in 1790 to Ontario; Land Petition of son Oliver Dingman shows he (Oliver) had lived in Ontario " .. upwards of 30 years " in 1825. Oliver would have been around 10 years old in 1795 so we must assume his family came to Ontario around that time. Census records show Ontario as birth place for some children earlier than this. Likely around 1790. He lived on 30 October 1800 at Bay Side Lot 38, North Marysburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Ontario; Land Registry Records (B&S 13) show that John Dingman purchased 100 acres of Lot 38, Bay Side, from Frederick Cramer who had obtained the original Crown Patent Jun 2 1798. He lived on 19 November 1803 at Bay Side Lot 39, North Marysburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Ontario; Land Registry Records (Patent) show that John Dingman obtained the Crown Patent for Lot 39, Bay Side, North Fredericksburgh, on Nov 19, 1803 - date is not clear, this is what it looks like. He lived on 27 January 1807 at Bay Side Lot 35, North Marysburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Ontario; Land Registry Records (B & S - 3) show that John Dingman purchased 60 acres of the East Half of Lot 35 on the Bay of Quinte Side Concession from Peter Collier & wife. The Crown Patent had been obtained by Peter Collier Dec 7 1803.
Note: This lot has Pryner Point on the shore of the Bay of Quinte, looking north to Adolphustown. Cressy is on the south, or Lake Side. He left a will on 3 February 1813 at North Marysburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Ontario; Land Registry Records (Will - 1198) show that a will was prepared for John Dingman, providing for his family. He died on 8 May 1813 at North Marysburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Ontario, at age 50; Date May 8 1813 per Burial. Location Prince Edward Co. per GEDCOM of caryn. Location Picton Per IGI Record. He was buried on 10 May 1813 at Dingman/Lumley Cemetery, North Marysburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Ontario; John Dingman's grave stone was uncovered due to dilligent work by Emerson and Ruth Smart and Wendy Irving, both in finding the exact location of the cemetery and digging out the stones - great work!!
