William "Thomas" Nichols was born on 24 November 1901 at Peterborough, Peterborough Co., Ontario; Date 24 Nov 1901 & location Peterborough per Findagrave. Date Nov 24 1901 & location Peterborough per GEDCOM of Cheryl Kemp Taber, Sep 20, 2008.1,2 He married Katherine L. "Kate: Farnham in 1922 at Omaha, Nebraska, U.S.A; "Katherine married Thomas Nichols in Omaha, Nebraska in 1922 and they had three children; Shirley Norma in Nebraska, Anna May & Clayton Thomas both in Wyoming." per Findagrave.2 William "Thomas" Nichols died on 1 November 1967 at Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan, U.S.A., at age 65; Date Nov 1 1967 & location Detroit, MI per findagrave.2 He was buried on 4 November 1967 at Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan, U.S.A; Findagrave: Name: William "Thomas" Nichols; Birth: 24 Nov 1901, Peterborough, Ont; Death: 1 Nov 1967 (aged 65), Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan, USA; Burial: Rose Hill Cemetery, Amhrestburg, Essex Co., Ont; Plot: New Section row 12 Site 21; ID: 88331204; Note: *error on headstone: birth date of Thomas was 24 Nov 1901; Thomas was born William Thomas Nichols to John Albert Nichols and Henrietta Bound in the area of Peterborough, Ontario. He died in Detroit, Michigan and is buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Amherstburg, Ontario with his son Clayton Nichols;
Thomas was sent to live away from home when he was only 8 years old. Sadly, it would appear an incident must have occurred to the Nichols family around 1910 resulting in them to break up. In the 1901 Ontario census the family is all together: John Albert - father, Henrietta - mother with children: Gilbert, Jessie, Fannie May, Florence, Roy & Edith. Thomas, Clayton & Alma are not yet born. Jenkins Ray is born in 1900 and doesn't appear on this census which leads me to believe he died as an infant. Older brother Harry is noted as a brother to Fannie May & Thomas in manifest documents to whom they are going to live with in Saginaw, Michigan when they are sent to live away from the family home in 1910 and therefore as it would appear Harry was already living away from the family at that time. By the 1911 census the family appears to be broken: Gilbert can not be found on a census. Fannie May is sent to live with her brother Harry in Michigan. Florence can not be found on a census. Roy is living with another family as domestic help. Edith is living with another family as domestic help. Jenkins does not appear and I again believe this is likely because he died as an infant. Thomas is sent to live with his brother Harry in Michigan. Clayton is living in a Children's Hospital. Alma can not be found on a census; Thomas was sent by train in September of 1910 from Ontario to live with his older brother Harry in Michigan however it is believed that he never made it to Harry and another family took him in - possibly a German family. It is unknown what exactly happen to Thomas between the years of 1910 - 1922 when he marries;
It is believed that Thomas was a cook with the US Military during WWI - likely lying about his age resulting in him to use the alias; Thomas Francis Nichols B: 3 Jan 1900 in Michigan, USA; Thomas married Katherine L Farnham in Omaha, Nebraska in 1922 and they had three children; Shirley Norma in Nebraska, Anna May & Clayton Thomas both in Wyoming. Around 1930 Thomas & Katherine moved themselves and their 3 children to Ontario, Canada. It is believed they lived in a tent city possibly in Kirkland Lake for approx. 1 yr & moved around fairly frequently in search of Thomas' family before settling in Warren, Ontario; Around 1950 Thomas & Katherine returned to the USA (their adult children remaining in Ontario) and are believed to have operated a convenience store in Detroit and owned a farm house in Novesta Township, Michigan where they visited on weekends. At the time of his death he was living at 112 Temple Street in Detroit, Michigan and was predeceased by his wife. (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/88331204/william_%22thomas%22-francis-nichols.)2
