Jacob A. Chatterson1
M, b. 1794, d. 5 November 1867
| Father | Elias Chatterson b. c 1760 |
| Mother | ? ? b. c 1760 |
Note: There is still plenty of disagreement in trees in ancestry.ca as to the parentage of this Jacob Chatterson. If there is a firm, confirmed, connection, I'd love to know about it. In the meantime, I am putting him with Elias, brother of Cornelius, and not Cornelius. Seems to work better for lots of reasons. Is this right?? (Dan Buchanan, Jan 10 2025.)1,2,3,4,5 He "The Petition of Jacob Chatterson of the township of Cramahe in the Newcastle District, humbly sheweth that your petitioner having served as a private at the post of Kingston in a flank company of the Addington Militia commanded by Captain Matthias Clark in the year of our lord 1812 as will appear by the annexed certificate." (Crown Land Petitions, 1839, RG 1 L3 Bundle C 22, Volume 123, Petition # 2a, from C-1730)
Note: This confirms that Jacob Chatterson was at Kingston during the War of 1812. in 1812 at Kingston, Frontenac Co., Upper Canada.6 He married Nancy Ann Bristol, daughter of Elisha Bristol and Jane Ann Van Anberg, before 1817 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Location of Cramahe Twp. assumed here because that is where the bride's family was well established. The groom was new to the area and did not have land yet. (Dan Buchanan, Jan 25 2025.)7 Jacob A. Chatterson The first appearance of Jacob Chatterson in Cramahe Township census records is in 1820 but he married a girl from Cramahe and appears in Cramahe Census records after 1820. Unfortunately, we can not use the land records for Conc 5, Lot 1, because those records do not exist in the OnLand.ca system. Conc 5 starts with page that has the transaction at the top in 1867 when Jacob sold that land to his son George. The location is east of Hilton, that sliver of land from the old border of Cramahe and Murray, to the next full lot west. It is where Florence Chatten lived.
How his son Elias got land at Presqu'ile Point does not relate to this. Jacob Chatterson is not recorded in any Murray Township census records, so must not have been living on Presqu'ile - they lived on conc 5, lot 1. I'd love to see more specific documentation, if it exists. (Dan Buchanan, Jan 24 2025) circa 1820. He appeared on the census of 1820 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1820 Census: Jacob Chatterson; 1 male over 16; 1 female over 16; 1 female under 16 (Newcastle District Census & Assessment Records, Cramahe Twp.)7 He appeared on the census of 1821 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1821 Census: Jacob Chatterson; 1 male over 16; 1 female over 16; 1 female under 16 (Newcastle District Census, Cramahe Twp.)7 He appeared on the census of 1823 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1823 Census: Jacob Chatterson; 1 male over 16; 1 female over 16; 1 female under 16 (Newcastle District Census, Cramahe Twp.)7 He appeared on the census of 1825 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1825 Census: Jacob Chatterson; 2 males under 16; 1 female under 16; 1 male over 16; 2 female under 16 (Newcastle District Census, Cramahe Twp.)7 He lived on 16 July 1828 at Conc 2 Lot 15, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Land Registry Records (B&S 2638) show that James Richardson Jn. sold 50 acres in the north west quarter of lot 15, conc 2, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co. to Jacob Chatterson. ITS Date: Jun 25 1832. Reg'n. Date; Jun 28 1832. (Ontario Land Registry Records, Northumberland Co., Cramahe Twp., Book 003, pg. 047 of 259, page copied from OnLand.ca by Dan Buchanan, Sep 28 2021.)8 He There is a militia pay list record for a Jacob Chatterson in 1835 that has been wrongly attributed to his Jacob Chatterson who lived in Cramahe Twp. That militia record should be for Jacob Chatterson, son of Cornelius, who lived in Ernestown Twp. See FindaGrave for an example of this mistake. (Dan Buchanan, Jan 10 2025) on 30 August 1835 at Upper Canada.9 He lived in April 1837 at Conc 5 Lot 1, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "That your petitioner having located himself with a numerous family on lot 1 in the 5th concession of Cramahe in the Newcastle District two years ago and have built and made considerable improvements on the same, it being a gore lot and unoccupied." Crown Land Petitions, 1839, RG 1 L3 Bundle C 22, Volume 123, Petition # 2a, from C-1730)
Note: This is the first and only documentation that I have see which places Jacob Chatterson at lot 1, conc 5, Cramahe Twp. at a particular date. This means he was elsewhere before 1837. (Dan Buchanan, Jan 25 2025.)6 He appeared on the census of after 1839 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1839 Census: Jacob Chatterson; 3 males under 16; 3 males over 16; 2 females under 16; 1 female over 16 (Newcastle District Census, Cramahe Twp.)7 He lived on 27 March 1839 at Conc 5 Lot 1, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "To His Excellency Sir George Arthur, K.C.H., Lieut. Governor of the Province of Upper Canada etc. etc. .. The Petition of Jacob Chatterson of the township of Cramahe in the Newcastle District, humbly sheweth that your petitioner having served as a private at the post of Kingston in a flank company of the Addington Militia commanded by Captain Matthias Clark in the year of our lord 1812 as will appear by the annexed certificate. That your petitioner having located himself with a numerous family on lot 1 in the 5th concession of Cramahe in the Newcastle District two years ago and have built and made considerable improvements on the same, it being a gore lot and unoccupied. Therefore, your petitioner humbly prays that your Excellency will be pleased to grant him the said lot for his services in the last war with the United States of America and your petitioner as in duty bound will ever pray. Jacob Chatterson, Cramahe, March 27, 1839" (Crown Land Petitions, 1839, RG 1 L3 Bundle C 22, Volume 123, Petition # 2a, from C-1730.)6 He lived on 18 April 1839 at Conc 5 Lot 1, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "Petition of Jacob Chatterson (C 22 No. 2) Applies to locate lot no 1 in the 5th concession of Cramahe. Gov. House, 30 March 1839. Referred to the Surveyor General to report ?? for the information of the Hon. The Lt. ? Council. ? ? and W. Macaulay. No. 97 Yo. Mar 1839.
By the survey of the Deputy Surveyor Richard Birdsall of the boundary between the townships of Murray and Cramahe, there is no lot no. 1 in the 5th concession of the latter township. The first lot is No. 2, which is a Clergy Reserve and returned other conveyances of Crown Lands for sale. S.G.O. 18 April 1839. J. Radenhhurst.
(Crown Land Petitions, 1839, RG 1 L3 Bundle C 22, Volume 123, Petition # 2c, from C-1730)
Note: Richard Birdsall was a very busy surveyor out of the Alnwick Twp. area. It is odd that his survey did not recognize the gore between Murray anc Cramahe at concession 5, Cramahe Twp. It is certainly shown there on the 1878 Belden Atlas. (Dan Buchanan, Jan 25 2025.)6 He lived on 20 July 1839 at Conc 5 Lot 1, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "In Council, 16 July 1839; So many difficulties have arisen from making sales, or grants, of alleged gores or unsurveyed tracts of land, that the Council cannot recommend any case of that description until much fuller and more satisfactory information is obtained on that point.
