They were attracted by the rich soil and agricultural prospects so settled at The Ridge, Wollaston/Lake/Marmora Townships, Hastings County, Coe Hill Ontario area. Oxen helped them clear the land. At first they shared the same log cabin on Lot 21 Concession 1 Wollaston Township. John Stanley then took the north half of Lot 21 and built where the Henderson farm now stands. Henry Bird took the south half of Lot 21 and built where the Moore farm now stands. Gilmour Lumber Company cleared land to grow a potato patch on the Henderson farm area. They had plans to clear all the land on The Ridge and make it into a company farm. They found Henry Bird and John Stanley already there. Employees of Gilmour Lumber were rugged men. It is said when the lumbermen confronted Henry, to protect himself in a ruffis, he stood in front of a tree so no one could get behind him. Gilmour Lumber Company had to abandon the project since this made a division of the land.
