"Seth Burr Gould - In the latter half of the last century, Mr. Nathan Gould left the land of the Republic that he might spend the rest of his days beneath the British flag. Amongst his new neighbors he found that loyalty to Britain which he so much rejoiced in. To test their sentiments he cheered the President of the United States and this joke nearly got him into sore trouble for their patriotic zeal needed only a slight opposition to make it's presence keenly felt. He took up land in the second concession of Cramahe, and there a family of three sons and four or five daughters was born to him. One of these daughters was laid in the first grave ever made in Salem cemetery. As a true patriot, an earnest Christian and a deacon of the first Cramahe Baptist church, Mr. Nathan Gould is still remembered by the elder people of this district. When he died he and one of his daughters were buried in the same grave and at the same time in Salem cemetery. On the 25th Feb., 1816, Seth Burr, the youngest son was born. He had a strong constitution and a large amount of determination. Having good natural abilities he got along with very few educational advantages. Concrete objects rather than literary subjects were the means by which he was trained for his life's work. As he came to manhood he grew dissatisfied with the conditions of life offered by his father' farm. He wanted better land and different surroundings. But as his father was failing him in health he decide to stay at home and care for his parents until they entered into rest. This decision gave him much comfort in after life. He married Miss Jerusha Reddick, a sister of Rev. Joel Reddick, and of Mr. David Reddick whose death we had to record about two months ago. The union thus formed proved a long and happy one. Two daughters were born to him. One of them was married to Mr. Ira Brown and died several years ago. The other daughter is the wife of Mr. L. Huycke, of Castleton. In 1863, Mr. Gould exchanged farms with Mr. Isaac Wlton of the 8th concession. From that date up to the time of his death he has resided there. With a good farm, good prices and good management, he enjoyed much prosperity and was regarded as one of the most successful farmer in the township. In early life he was the subject of deep spiritual impressions. He trusted in Christ as his Saviour. He loved to join in the worship of God and though he never openly united with the church he was a liberal supporter of the work and was seldom absent from the services when his health was such that he could attend. In church building, missionary work and in other enterprises of the kind he was a ready and cheerful helper. No really worthy cause appealed to him in vain. In politics he was a decided conservative. He never wavered in his lifelong adherence to the party of his choice. He believed in and loved Canada and was devotedly loyal to everything that he regarded as truly British and truly Canadian. As a neighbor and citizen, he was known to be kind, helpful and obliging. He was a man of his word. Untruthfulness and ingratitude sorely pained him. He was a helper to the helpless and a friend to the poor. Hospitality reigned in his home.
For twenty years past his health had not been robust. Several times it seemed as though the end was near. The constant care of his devoted wife and other friends and medical aid were often the means of restoring him when hope had almost fled. Through the past summer he was able to be about as usual, though he felt very weak at times. About five weeks ago he was seized with erysipelas and heart trouble. The utmost care and attention were bestowed upon him, but in spite of all he gradually sank; memory failed, the mind became confused and he entirely lost his sight. Toward the end he was taken with congestion of the lungs and on the night of Friday, Nov. 22nd., he passed away. During the earlier stages of his last illness he expressed the utmost gratitude to God for the many blessings which had marked his long pilgrimage. He had the rich assurance that all was well. He gave full direction concerning his funeral, selected a text of Scripture and made choice of this who were to bear his body to the grave. On Monday the 25th a large number of friends and acquaintances met at the house and were to have proceeded to the Baptist Church for service, but on account of the severe storm the service was held at the house and was conducted by Rev. A. McNeil, S. Van Tasse and T. Watson. The text chosen was II Corinthians 5th chapter 1st verse. After the many friends had taken their last look at the well known face, the lifeless form in its beautiful casket was reverently born away. Mr. E. Cochrane, M. P., Messrs. W. Duncan, W. J. Atchinson, W. M. Winn, W. H. Montgomery and A. May, were the six friends who rendered the last respectful service to the departed one. In the midst of a blinding rain and hail storm the mortal remains were committed to the grave and with the voice of prayer and the sound of the Gospel benediction the assembly dispersed, looking for the time when broken circles shall be again complete in that fair land whose inhabitants say not I am sick." Amongst his new neighbors he found that loyalty to Britain which he so much rejoiced in. "Fatal Accident - On Saturday, May 17th, 1902, about noon, Mr. Arthur S. Brown, a son of the late Ira Brown, was accidentally killed on the G. T. Railway some three miles east of Colborne. He was one of the section men working at the place and had occassion to go a short distance for spikes. Being ready to return, he stood on the south track to allow the flyer to pass east on the north track, and, evidently absorbed in watching it, a freight from the east struck him and threw his body as if a ball some forty feet distant off the track. Death of course was immediate. Deceased was in his 24th year, unmarried and resided close by with is sister as housekeeper. He was a good-living fellow, well known and popular in the district, hence his untimely and awfully sudden death commands the grief of the community for his greatly afflicted sister. His kindness towards her was very marked as evidenced by his thoughtfullness in lately joining the Ancient Order of United Workmen, Colborne, and having her named as his beneficiary in a five hundred dollar certificate. She will also be the recipient of his Grand Trunk insurance, $250, we understand. The funeral on Monday was under the auspices of te Workmen, the attendance being good, as was also that of the general public. Interment took place at Salem Cemetery." from Carol Brown's book of news articles, copied at The Cobourg Public Library, Oct. 2001
