Note from Dan Buchanan: I received a call Tuesday afternoon from Dixie telling me that Aunt Bernice had passed away on Monday. She also asked me to be a pall bearer which I accepted gladly. I took Thursday off and went to Trenton in the afternoon, attending at the Walas Funeral Home in Brighton at 6:00 pm with the family and then for the Eastern Star Service. Visitation commenced at 7 pm and was busy until around 8:30 when we had time to visit. The funeral service on Friday was touching and comforting. Dad provided his normal inspiring and thoughtful message and our work as pall bearers was short, cold and satisfying. Good family visiting followed in the Church Hall and I was able to speak to several persons of interest. Later I went to Dad's in Belleville where we had supper, worked a bit with this new digital camera and digital picture frame and had a good visit. All in all, not a bad few days under the circumstances. Aunt Bernice would have been happy to see the family get together for whatever reason. Note: This contradicts the story of a Mr. Burnham who was supposed to have named the village and built the first brick house. Most likely, both of those things were done by George King, the first settler in the immediate village area in 1846. in April 1962 at Buchanan Farm House, Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario.5 He "Two-Headed Calf Born at Codrington; May Be Shipped to Guelph For Study; Campbellford (ENS) – A deformed calf, with two heads, has been born on the farm of Charles Buchanan at Codrington, 10 miles south of here. The calf, the progeny of a Herford bull and a Holstein heifer, was born Friday, and although it is weak, it appears normal in other respects. The Two heads protrude from a single neck. The heads each have two eyes, although the two centre eyes are blind and are deter??..ing?. The animal breathes through one nostril on each head, apparently the outer two. Although both mouths open slightly at the corners, the lower jaw does not function. Both tongues operate in unison, as though joined at the base. The calf is fed mother’s milk mixed with corn syrup by means of a veterinarian’s syringe, but the milk sometimes will run out of the other mouth. Campbellford Veterinarian Dr. J. E. Trimble said that while such a birth is not as rare as many may think, it was the first time he had known a calf with two heads lived more than a short time after birth.
Is it believed the calf will be shipped to the Ontario Agricultural College at Guelph for examination. Veterinary officials do not feel it will lie more than a few days.
Meanwhile, the Buchanan farm at Codrington is a busy place, with visitors arriving throughout the day and evening to see the freak of nature. Mr. Buchanan said the cow which bore the deformed calf had not been given the drug Thalidomide during her pregnancy." The calf, the progeny of a Herford bull and a Holstein heifer, was born Friday, and although it is weak, it appears normal in other respects. Mr. Buchanan said the cow which bore the deformed calf had not been given the drug Thalidomide during her pregnancy." (There is a picture with this article, showing the calf with Dan holding up its head. The caption reads: Two-Headed Calf Attracts Curious to Codrington; Dan Buchanan, 11, shows heads of deformed animal; (Wm. W. Reid Photo))

She "He is survived by his "manager" and beloved wife of 64 years, Nan... " per Obit of her husband Buck Buchanan. on 13 September 2007 at Ottawa, Ontario. She died on 21 August 2019 at Manitock, Ontario, at age 98; "Nan Buchanan; FEBRUARY 14, 1921 ~ AUGUST 21, 2019; Buchanan - Nan; Passed peacefully on Wednesday, August 21, 2019, age 98 years. Beloved wife of the late Kent (Buck) Buchanan. Treasured mother of Alan (Mary), Betty-Ann Gilliland (Dan), Bob (Helen), Sue Pierce (Rusty) and Sheila Buchanan (Joe Agueci). Predeceased by her son Jim. Loving Nana of Stephanie, Trevor, Devin, Jesse, Dan, Nick, and Jeanne. Great grandmother to 6. Born Nan Griffiths in Wales, Nan was the youngest of four. Her father, the local school master, had high standards for his children, instilling in them a lifelong thirst for knowledge and a desire to excel. Orphaned at the age of 14, Nan chose to seek her fortune in London, England where she rose quickly through the ranks of Freeman's, England's first mail order company. When WWII triggered the arrival of Canadian troops, Nan met and married a young officer, Kent (Buck) Buchanan. He survived Italy and she survived the bombings in London, and at war's end they, along with their firstborn Alan, crossed the Atlantic on the Queen Mary to start a new life in Canada. For the next thirty years Nan supervised the frequent postings of her ever-expanding family until Buck retired from his military career in Ottawa. Settled at last and with children leaving home, Nan was able to use her skills to work with the Children's Aid Society promoting the infant stimulation program focussing on mothers at risk. Nan was extroverted and civic-minded, always involved with her local church. Her interests were wide-ranging and she enjoyed bridge, book groups and her Margaret Morris Movement. In retirement she and Buck split their time between the cottage, where she loved to be in the water especially for her 7am swim, and their house on the river in Manotick. But above all she treasured her family and would follow them to the ends of the earth, which she did quite regularly, visiting her family in Australia, BC, Michigan and the U.K.
The 2 great tragedies in her life were the death of her son, Jim age 21, and the loss of her beloved Buck age 92, from which she never fully recovered. But she pressed on regardless, fueled by her energy and her sense of adventure. This motivated her to make her last two big voyages at the age of 88 and 89 to Australia and England chaperoned by her son Alan. She celebrated her 90th birthday in Victoria, among friends and family before having her many opinions quieted by a stroke. She spent her final years at Orchard Walk Retirement Home in Greely. Heartfelt thanks go to the staff there for their kindness and their respect of Nan's fierce desire to maintain her independence. Friends may attend a visitation at St. James Anglican, 1138 Bridge St., Manotick on Tuesday, August 27 th from 10 a.m. until of funeral service at 11 a.m. Those wishing may make memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Dementia Society.
