"Death of Monroe S. Gould - The sudden passing away on Saturday, Oct. 16th, 1915, of Monroe S. Gould, was a sad shock and surprise to his numerous friends and acquaintances. He was about as usual until Friday morning, when he was overcome with heart weakness; on Saturday he seemed some better but in the afternoon was again stricken and passed away in a few minutes. Mr. Gould, who was in his 70th year was born in Colborne and spent his whole life in that vicinity. He was held in the highest esteem by all, being upright and honest, a kind friend and neighbour, and taking an interest in the welfare of the community. In religion he was always a consistent and active member of the Methodist church, and for many years, an official of the Salem circuit, and unfailing supporter and helper of its several pastors. This was attested to at the funeral services which were held in the church on Tuesday afternoon when the pastor, Rev. J. Batstone, and two former pastors, Rev. J. D. Knox of Frankford, and Rev. E. E. Howard of Brighton, paid high tribute to the stirling characteristics of Mr. Gould, and his unvarying encouragement and inspiration. Rev. R. Bamforth of Colborne also took part in the services. In politics he was a Conservative and while never aspiring to office, Mr. Gould took an interest in public questions, especially those aiming to uplift the moral status of the people or community. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Adam B. Gould of Moose Jaw, Sask. and two daughters, Mrs. Edward Farrow, of Edville and Mrs. W. R. Taylor of Colborne. Among many relatives and friends attending the funeral were his brother, Albert Gould of Toronto, and nephew Carman Gould of Peterborough; Mr. and Mrs. T. Ames, Mr. and Mrs. James Morgan and Miss Florence and Mr. Kenneth Ames of Codrington; Mrs. Oliver, Mr. and Mrs. McDonald, Campbellford; Mr. and Mrs. Dorland, Mrs. G. Gould and A. J. Gould of Cobourg; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Massey of Morganston; Mr. N. B. Gould of Port Hope. Owing to interrupted train connections, Mr. Adam B. Gould, the son, was unable to get home until after the services, and the interment which took place in Salem Cemetery, was delayed until his arrival by the five o'clock train.
