Family of Huguenot ancestory. in 1830 at Sophiasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada. He lived in 1830 at Sophiasburgh Twp., Northport, Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; "Northport was a shipbuilding village and port for the Sophiasburgh farmers and Demorestville millers. It was small - two streets leading down the hill to the bay, and the shore road, which was called Morden Street, in Northport, through the middle. The atmosphere in Northport was shipping. There were fishing boats, passenger steamboats on their way between Kingston and Prescott, lake and ocean schooners bringing livestock and goods, picking up grain."
"The first people in the village were James Morden and Isaac Demille in 1791. The Solmes's came soon after and the Spragues in 1812. Morden's is said to have been the first house in Sophiasburgh. James's son Richard Morden kept the village's first store. By 1850 there were three stores and a blacksmith shop. Samuel Sprague was postmaster. Northport had one church, Methodist, one school, and was widely considered one of the prettiest villages in Canada West."
Quoted from "The County", Picton Public Library. He George King - Family History - Marilyn Adams Research Center, Ameliasburgh
Following is what I found here re George King - and almost nothing else. It is full of errors but provides some interesting insights. It is the first and only place I have seen Henrietta's father's name and that George was definitely in Kingston before coming to Sophiasburgh.
King (Leroy) family of P.E.Co. & Brighton:
George King born U.S.A., res Kingston by 1832, but settled Sophiasburgh 1830, and also resided in Crofton, Ont. His wife, Henrietta Jenkins, d/o William a shoemaker from Northport. Henrietta born Sophiasburgh. Married Oct. 16, 1832. (From Presbyterian Register). Three Children:
Emma, Harrison, & Dr. William Henry King.
Emma King, 2nd wife of Albert Wilson Post, no issue. Res. Brighton, Ont.
Harrison King, married Mary Eliza Post, sister of Albert. No issue, res. Brighton, Ont.
Dr. William Henry King, born 1835 in Crofton, Ont. Res. Brighton, Ont. He died age 24 yrs. In 1859. Married Sarah Ann lawson. Dr. William studied medicine in Toronto & Hamilton, returned to Brighton in 1858. Died tragic death. Methodist, 5'7". From Burr;s Book. Family of Huguenot ancestry. in 1830 at Sophiasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada. He Land Registry Records show that William Jenkins purchased 14 acres of Lot 26 Conc I, Village of Northport from Peter Demill after October 1832 at Sophiasburgh Twp., Northport, Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada. He lived before 16 October 1832 at Kingston, Frontenac Co., Upper Canada; Marriage record shows that George King was from Kingston. He married Henrietta Jenkins, daughter of William Jenkins and ? ?, on 16 October 1832 at Presbyterian Church, Sophiasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; Presbyterian Marriage Register for Rev. Robert James McDowall shows a marriage on Oct 16 1832, George Leroy King of Kingston and Henrietta Jenkins of Sophiasburgh
Note: This is the first time we have seen Henrietta's surname or George's middle name. This marriage register appears on several lists of marriages for Upper Canada. George N. King lived after 16 October 1832 at Sophiasburgh Twp, Northport, Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; After his marriage George King lived in Northport, Sophiasburgh. He was a young man of 21 and had no property so he likely worked at the docks of Northport which was a booming port town at that time. Of course, he could have worked as a farm labourer in the area although he would not likely have lived in Northport in that case.
William Jenkins owned property in Northport and was a shoemaker so it is easy to see how young George King could have met and married Henrietta soon after coming to the small village. He Land Registry Records do not include any transaction for George King in Northport or Concessions I and II of Sophiasburgh (West of Green Point) after 16 October 1832 at Sophiasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada. He The date "1835" and the name "King" are written on the inside of the front cover of a miniature Wesleyan Methodist Hymnal which was passed down through our grandfather, Lloyd Ames. In that year the King family would have been living in Sophiasburgh, maybe at Northport where some of the children are said to have been born. in 1835 at Sophiasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada.1 He Marriage Register: Groom: John Covert; Res.: Picton; Bride: Susan ? Laroy; Date: Jun 5 1838; Witnesses: George & Henrietta King; Performed by: Rev. John C. ?Davidson?; Denomination: Welseyan Methodist; How: by license; Side: Recorded July 21 1838, D. C. Sanfield, C.P. Prince Edward Co. (Ontario Marriage Registers, 1838, Prince Edward Co., page 22 (pg. 2 of 11), ancestry.ca)
Note: The Witnesses are George and Henrietta King who lived at Northport and would move to Codrington. Theory has it that George King changed his name from Leroy to King when he came to Upper Canada from the Syracuse area in the 1820s. Any connection with Leroy has not been made, but there are hints, like them being a witness for the marriage of a Susan Leroy (more likely than Laroy) who may well be a relative from before the name change. This suggests the energy and gumption of both boys and possibly the close relationship that may have developed by neccessity between them. in 1849 at Cramahe Twp., Codrington, Newcastle District, Canada West.      Isaac Newton King was born on 28 January 1836 at Sophiasburgh Twp., Northport, Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; Date Jan 28, 1836 per Baptism. Date per Mildred (King) Beitzel's family history. Only reference to Northport, Sophiasburgh: per Marriage Registers 1858 - 1869, Brighton Towship: King, Isaac Newton, 28. Br., Northport, s/o George & Henrietta, m. 21 Jan 1863, Abigail Losee, 26, Percy, Ameliasburg, d/o Daniel & Phebe Losee
Date Jan 28 1836 per page 249 of "The Mitchell, Higgins, Parr and Lawson Book" by Lawrence and Helen Mitchell, seen at Trenton Public Library, June 2, 2004.1 He The King family moved from Northport, Sophiasburg Township, Prince Edward County to Cramahe Township in Northumberland County. The land where they settled would become part of the newly created Brighton Township in 1852 and the southern edge of their property would be sold for village lots as the village of Codrington took shape in the 1860s and 1870s. in 1844 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West. He appeared on the census of June 1852 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; Age 16 at 1851 Census: see George King.2 He was baptized on 30 June 1852 at Trenton Anglican Church Diocese, Carrying Place, Northumberland Co., Canada West; Baptism: Name: Isaac Newton King; Parents: George N. and Henrietta King; Trade: farmer; Abode: Cramahe; Date of Birth: Jan 28, 1836; Date of Baptism: June 30, 1852; Sponsors: Adult Baptism; Officiating Minister: W. He was The National Archives of Canada show that Isaac King was Postmaster at Codrington from June 1, 1858 until March 1859 when it says he "Left the province". This matches with information from William Henry King's murder trial that Isaac was in California at the time of his arrest, trial and execution.
Note: Sorry. This does not altogether match. Sarah King died Nov 4 1858 and the trial was April 4 1859, hanging June 9th. It is hard to imagine that Isaac would have gone to California AFTER his brother was arrested. Maybe he left in Sep 1858 or so and would have been gone for the whole thing - the dates re the post office lagging in the records??? On 6 January 1858 at Postmaster, Codrington, Northumberland Co., Canada West. He lived on 11 February 1859 at Michigan Bar, California, U.S.A; "To My Parents; Dear Parents, to you who has been so kind and who has undergone so many troubles and heardships for my own good, I feel it my duty as I have arived at the age of twenty three to give you the credit and Honour off my ariving to this age without one blemished or guilty stain to encounter. Cal. Michigan Bar - Isaac N. King; Saturday, February 11/59" (below a blank space:)"Far from my native land I strove .. Who has watched me through night and day and to my parents I will prove to you my debts I never can pay read the first and third together" (This text was found on a small loose sheet of paper inside the notebook where William Henry King (Isaac's older brother) wrote "A Last Prayer" for his mother on June 6 1859, 3 days before he was hanged at Cobourg for poisoning his wife.)
Note: We know Isaac was in California but the address appears say "Cal. Michigan Bar". He Between March 1859 and 1861 Isaac King went to California. The account of William Henry King's story mentions that William got a letter from Issac who was in California. The list of Postmasters says that the reason for leaving was "Leaving the country".
Note: The John Goodfellow story tells that several of his sons went to California with a few others from the area in 1859 and several others some years later. No mention is made of Isaac King, although they were close neighbours. The timing is not right for Isaac to have been one of the early bunch that went per the Goodfellow story - maybe the later ones.
in March 1859 at California, U.S.A.. He The account of William Henry King's trial includes diary entries from one Alexander Stewart who was assigned to guard William while he was in jail awaiting execution. His words include the following entries:
Soon after the trial: "Mr. Bennett had two letters, one from a brother in California who heard of his imprisonment and expected to hear of his acquital, expressed his (William's) regret to think how it would vex him to hear if his verdict and sentence. 'My poor Isaac, how it will wound your heart, you need to feel so proud of me.'"
Only a few days before the end: "The Judge, his counsel, his brother Isaac in California, and numerous others received letters from King during the weeks prior to his execution." in May 1859 at Court House, Cobourg, Northumberland Co., Canada West.
