(The Latimer Photos, Codrington Public Library) circa 1930 at Brighton Twp., Orland, Northumberland Co., Ontario.11 He lived circa 1960 at Brighton Twp., Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Per Charles Buchanan: Dave lived for many years with his mother in the house west of Hwy 30 near the Mount Olivet road. After his mother died Dave could be seen routinely heading to Brighton to spend time at the pool hall. He seemed to always have the same clothes on and you could expect to see the pipe in his mouth. Gordon McGee farmed the land around the house and has suggested that Dave did very little in the way of housekeeping.
He lived on 21 February 1962 at Brighton Twp., Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Fire destroyed the home of Mr. David Goodfellow on Highway 30 north of Codrington early the morning of February 21 ... " from The Campbellford Herald, Wednesday, March 7, 1962, see on microfilm at The Ontario Archives. He lived in 1965 at Mount Olivet, Ontario; Per Charles Buchanan: Dave's house on Hwy 30 burned down one morning and he then moved in with John, Margaret and the kids on the east side of Mount Olivet. He cleaned up, got some new clothes, started smoking outside and seemed to enjoy these completely different living conditions for the last years of his life.
Gordon McGee was the first on the scene when the house burned and was reported to have said that he found Dave sitting on a suitcase in front of the burning house - calmly smoking his pipe. Dave apparently yelled to Gordon "Look at her burn!" He "David N. Goodfellow Celebrates 90th Birthday at Codrington - David Nelson Goodfellow of Codrington marked his 90th birthday quietly on Sunday at Antrimlea Farms, Codrington in company with his nephew, John Goodfellow, Mrs. Goodfellow and girls. (Nov 20 1967). Still a man of vigor, he takes pleasure six days a week in walking two miles to ride the bus to Brighton where he spends the afternoon shooting pool. "I'm not a pool shark; I play for fun. Mr. Goodfellow, son of the late John Goodfellow and Louisa Dingwall was born on a neighboring farm. He recalled stories that his father had told of his work in the California gold rush. A silver watch used as time keeper there has been in David's possession for many years and has been passed on to his nephew. The proceeds of the California work were used to purchase a farm which was later left to David's brother now Mr. Grant Goodfellow, Argyle St., Peterborough.
His ancestors came from Antrim County, Ireland in 1841. The farm on which he has lived for the past six years since his own burned, bears a similar Irish name. (Tweedsmuir Histories, Reel 1, I-231) on 2 November 1967 at Antrimlea Farms, Brighton Twp., Mount Olivet, Northumberland Co., Ontario.12 He died on 1 April 1968 at Civic Hospital, Peterborough, Peterborough Co., Ontario, at age 90; "Goodfellow, David Nelson - At Civic Hospital, Peterborough, on Monday, April 1, 1968. "In 1915 a contingent of soldiers marched from Brighton to Campbellford where they entrained for Belleville. when they arrived inb Codrington at noon, they stopped in the field south of the Walter Ames home, west of Carman Ruttan's present residence. Here the soldiers removed their socks and boots and washed their feet in the watering trough. Tents were set up and the officeers at chicken, the soldiers ate ?? . Ames' kitchen table was used for the food. Codrington ladies supplied cakes and ?? for their desert. Fresh horses were supplied by Codrington men to drive the mess waggon on to Campbellford. As a small school boy, John Goodfellow remembers following behind with teacher Maggie Jordan and the other students, as they marched on to the train and the students returned to Mount Olivet." Note: These lines are hand written in spaces around pictures and newspaper articles about WWI. There is no signature but I assume they were written by Margaret (Atkinson) Goodfellow, who was much involved in working on "The Tweedsmuir Histories of Codrington", and was the wife of the John Goodfellow mentioned in the story. in 1915 at Cod Field, Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario.4 He In the early 1920s Linnie (King) Ames was increasingly agitated by the memorial of William Henry King standing up at the south east corner of the Ames farm house. It had been there since it was erected by George King in the 1860s and was a constant reminder of the shame that the notorious murderer had imposed on his family. Linnie King was a niece of Dr. King, being the daughter of David Nelson King, a younger brother of William Herny King, who was the oldest of the King children. At some point, the presence of the stone became unbearable for Linnie so she asked her two younger sons, Lloyd and Kenneth, to get rid of it. The boys did the expedient thing. They pulled the stone out of the ground, dug a shallow trench, lay the stone down in it and covered it with sod. Out of sight, out of mind, might be the intent of this excersize. In any case, that is how the memorial of William Henry King ended up in the ground at the south east corner of the Buchanan house in the mid-1950s when septic work motivated Lloyd Ames to move it. In the process, Charles Buchanan took two pictures of it and they reburied the stone in the garden just a few feet away, where it was pulled up by the plough about a decade later. (Dan Buchanan) circa 1920 at Ames Home, Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario.5 He appeared on the census of 8 June 1921 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Age 18 at 1921 Census: see Walter Ames.2 He "Codrington: Lloyd Ames, who spent about six weeks in Saskatchewan, returned home looking hale and hearty after his trip." from The Brighton Ensign, October 27, 1922, see on microfilm at The Ontario Archives, Feb 8, 2001 on 27 October 1922 at Brighton Twp., Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario.6 He "Codrington: Mr. Lloyd Ames left last Saturday for Chicago where he intends taking an electrical course." from The Brighton Ensign, February 23, 1923, see on microfilm at The Ontario Archives, Feb 8, 2001 on 23 February 1923 at Brighton Twp., Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario.6 He "Codrington: The Agricultural College at Guelph is closed on account of the flu epidemic. Mr. William Goodfellow is home from the above college where he has been taking a course and is himself ill with the same disease." from The Brighton Ensign, March 2, 1923, seen on microfilm at The Ontario Archives, Feb 8, 2001
Note: Lloyd Ames often told the story of how he bundled Bill Goodfellow in blankets and took him from the boarding house in Guelph on the train to Toronto and then, meeting his father and brother who brought sleighs to Brighton, slogged through a snow storm to get the unconscious Bill home where he survived after several difficult months to later become a respected member of parliament. It was a wonderful story and could have happened since Lloyd was on his way to Chicago Feb 23 and could have been at Guelph when Bill took sick.
Note: This was NOT the so-called "Spanish Flu"Epidemic" which happened late 1918 through much of 1920. This was just bad flu but not part of a larger epidemic. on 2 March 1923 at Brighton Twp., Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario.6 He "Mr. Lloyd Ames returned home on Tuesday." from The Brighton Ensign, March 2, 1923, see on microfilm at The Ontario Archives, Feb 8, 2001 on 2 March 1923 at Brighton Twp., Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario.6 He "Houses; The Lloyd Ames farm house was the first brick house built in the Village. It is over 100 years old. It was built by Mr. King, Lloyd Ames' greatgrandfather. Mr. King's son Harrison owned the place later and then Walter Ames bought it. Eldon Robinson was born there on March 12th, 1876, and his mother remembers being in it at least 18 years before that. Mr. King Sr. had passed on before Eldon Robinson was born." from "Landmarks in the Village of Codrington, Kindly submitted by Mr. Eldon R. Robinson", copied from Tweedsmuir Histories on microfilm at Metro Toronto Research Library, Toronto by Dan Buchanan
Note: If " .. his mother remebers being in it at least 18 years before that ..." then the house was built before 1858. circa 1924 at Ames Home, Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario.4 He "Down Memory Lane: Items from the files of the Brighton Ensign: 1924 - 40 Years Ago: Lloyd Ames and Howard Ames of Codrington have gone to Detroit where they intend getting positions." from The Trentonian, January 17, 1964, seen on microfilm at The Trenton Public Library, July 20, 2002. in January 1924 at Brighton Twp., Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario. Certificate of Marriage: Groom: Ames, Clarence Lloyd; Birthplace: Ontario; Bride: Haggerty, Louise Ellen; Birthplace: Ontario; Date of Marriage: September 17, 1924; Place of marriage: Brighton; Date of registration: September 23, 1924 (Copy of Marriage Certificate obtained Nov 23, 2000, through application and fee, from the Ontario Registrar)
Note: Place of marriage likely means the place of registration. The marriage took place in Lennox & Addington County, in the Methodist Church in Centreville, south of the Haggerty home which was on the north side of Camden East Twp.. The couple then lived in Codrington, in Brighton Twp.. The marriage could have been registered in the town of Brighton which could be reflected in this document, although mis-spelled.

Centreville is a village in Camden East Twp., south of the Haggerty farm.7 Clarence "Lloyd" Ames "Mr. and Mrs. C. Lloyd Ames returned from their honeymoon trip on Saturday, September 27. When the road went through between Brighton and Campbellford in 1853, the center of activity moved completely to the valley and people gradually abandoned the buildings in the hills. The land here became woodlot and pasture land.8 He lived on 14 November 1933 at Conc 9 Lot 5, Brighton Twp., Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Land Records show that Vernon Ames sold his share of the N 1/2 to Lloyd Ames for $1,000.8 He lived on 2 June 1935 at Brighton Twp., Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Informant for Death Reg'n. of his father Frederick Walter Ames.9 He lived on 10 August 1935 at Conc 9 Lot 3, Brighton Twp., Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario, Canada; Land Records show that Frederick W. Note: Wally Simmons is also mentioned as attending Linnie's funeral. Russell Jaques told me (Dan Buchanan) that Wally had been an orphan who came to live with the Ames family when he was quite young. He thought very highly of Linnie Ames who was his surrogate mother for so many years. Apparently Wally Simmons became very successful in the U.S., returning to visit Codrington in a big car and fancy clothes. on 19 July 1912 at Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario.8 She Witness at marriage of James Henry Ross and Emma E. King - daughter of Manly King & Mary E. Bush on 4 June 1913 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario. She "Mr. Willie Simmons and family, Torraine, Ohio, motored from their home a distance of five hundred miles in a little over two days, making the trip, and are guests of Mr. & Mrs. Walter Ames. Wallie spent part of his boyhood days with Mr. Ames, and at an early age sought to mae his name in another country. We are glad to see him looking so well and progressive. He has returned home, leaving his family of two boys and two girls to holiday on the farm." from The Brighton Ensign, July 11, 1919, page 8, recorded from microfilm at Trenton Public Library, July 24, 2018. on 11 July 1919 at Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario. She In the early 1920s Linnie (King) Ames was increasingly agitated by the memorial of William Henry King standing up at the south east corner of the Ames farm house. Out of sight, out of mind, might be the intent of this exersize. (Dan Buchanan) circa 1920 at Ames Home, Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario.9 She appeared on the census of 8 June 1921 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Age 50 at 1921 Census: see Walter Ames.2 She lived on 25 October 1924 at Conc 9 Lot 2, Brighton Twp, Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Land Registry Records (Grant 11117) show that Kenneth G. Ames sold part of the SW 1/4 ( excluding 13 1/2 acres owned by D. N. King) to Linnie A. Ames.
