Both Brenda and Phil became specialists in the growing North American horticultural industry (‘back to the farm’), bringing professional management standards to family-owned businesses. Great fun with good clients (too much fun to retire!)." per Obit in 1987 at Kitchener, Ontario.1 He Hi Dan: I have found your website “TreesByDan” so helpful in researching my direct ancestors – I marvel at the amount of time & effort you have devoted to it. All of us that use your information are so thankful to you for all your efforts. I wanted to send you a copy of a note that my father made (probably in the late 1960’s) as he wrote down some family info about his great grandparents & their children.
You will note that he mentions that Charles (son of Charles & Mary) had a “…illegimate (illegitimate) son in Murray Township (Jack), then married a Spanish Mexican wife in California…”.
Probably that’s why you couldn’t find a record of marriage for Charles before he left for California in 1859 at the age of 25. But Charles’ son John (called Jack by my father) seemed to have been brought up on the original Goodfellow farm on Preston Hill by his grandmother Mary and his uncle George, and inherited the family farm on Preston Hill. There appears to be a record of a Charles Goodfellow in California in both the 1870 & 1880 Census, but I haven’t found a wedding record. Then in 1888, you found a record of Charles back on the Preston Hill farm with his wife Rose (US born & RC – could she have been the Spanish wife? If she was 42 in 1891, then she would have been only 11 in 1860 when John was born, so she probably wasn’t John’s mother). Charles’s son John (Jack) doesn’t appear in your 1891 Census info (because his long-lost father & new wife had come back to the family farm?) but John appears again on the family farm in 1901 (after his father was long dead).
My father told stories about how beautiful this Spanish wife of Charles was supposed to have been, and how she had gone back to California after Charles’ death. Just thought you’d find this interesting. Phil" per email from Phil Goodfellow, May 4, 2005. on 4 May 2005 at Ontario.1 He "With Brenda as designer and general contractor, built ‘dream-home’ on Lake Huron in the friendly Bradley Harbour community in 2011. Both active in local community organizations, with strong opinions on political issues – love the Northern Bruce!" per Obit in 2011 at Bradley Harbour, North Bruce, Ontario.1 He "Hi Dan: We were very sorry to hear the news about your Dad today. We are so thankful to you Dan for advising me last fall to visit your Dad sooner than later. As you know, we visited him at his home in Belleville for an afternoon right after Xmas. He appeared well, dressed to the 9’s, and ready to share his memories of family & friends. As you know, your grandfather had your Dad leave school when he turned 15 “to work for Uncle Bill and learn modern farming”. Your Dad was a big part of our family during those 10 years working & living on our farm. We were amazed that afternoon by your Dad’s vigour, his great humour and his brilliant mind – and he filled me in on a lot of my family’s doings prior to 1949 (born in 1943, I have limited memory of those first 6 years of my life). The best laugh we had together was when I related my mother’s remembrance that because your Dad was the only male in the house during weekdays (my Dad being in Toronto as the local MPP & Ontario cabinet minister, and only home on weekends), I first called him ‘Daddy’ until I grew old enough to straighten out the family relationships.
Of course, your Dad was always the favourite nephew of my parents (& a good ‘brother’ to my sisters), and achieved special status from Mom when he became a minister (the Philp’s had a tradition of being Methodist ministers). When your Dad was finally ordained, my Mother became less disappointed that I hadn’t chosen that career. We will always be thankful for that beautiful afternoon, which I must personally thank you for Dan. Since we’ll be unable to join you in Belleville this week, please convey our condolences to your siblings & their families for us. Regards, Phil" per email from Phil Goodfellow, June 19, 2012 on 19 June 2012.1 He "Hi Howard: After much confusion this past summer about the results of a CT scan and a lung biopsy, the Cancer Clinic in London finally explained that a ‘troubling’ 10-cm melanoma tumour is sitting on my backbone between my lungs, and wrapped around the spinal cord, lung airways, the aorta, and the esophagus. As a result, surgical removal is not a viable option. Another CT scan in October indicated that this tumour hadn’t grown during the past 3+ months, which is definitely not conforming to the ‘melanoma experts’ expectations (of rapid growth of the tumour!). Unfortunately that CT scan also showed a ‘spot’ in my brain, resulting in the loss of my driver’s license. As of last Thursday, Dr. Fortin, the radiologist at the Grand River Cancer Clinic that did my initial radiation back in 2012, has worked out a radiation schedule of 10 treatments over 2 weeks beginning November 16th in Kitchener, to zap the melanoma tumour sitting in my chest without damaging spinal cord, heart, lungs, etc. The side effects (after all, radiation is burning tissue!) shouldn’t be severe. The sooner the better in order to kill as many of the cancer cells as possible! The purpose is to slow / stop the tumour from expanding and crushing the surrounding organs in my chest. Brenda will drive me down to Kitchener each Monday and pick me up on Friday, and I’ll stay at Jeremy’s place in Drumbo during the week. Jeremy has rescheduled his work routine to get me to the daily radiation treatment (20 minutes) at Grand River. Fortin has also agreed to authorize a MRI to determine if the recently discovered ‘spot’ in my brain is actually melanoma. He would than look at zapping that spot as well as the small melanoma tumour in my right lung while I’m getting my other radiation treatments. If the brain ‘spot’ isn’t melanoma, then we’ll have the medical data to send to the Ministry of Transportation to get my driver’s license back. Good to finally be getting some effective treatment to fight back against this disease. Except for the loss of physical stamina this fall, I’m in good health without any pain or cancer symptoms (except for the nagging coughing from post-nasal drip, possibly made worse by the tumour). Thanks to Brenda for all her loving care! Besides looking after me hand & foot, Brenda has been forced to pick up most of my household duties, putting a huge burden on her shoulders. Now, she’s the only driver in the family! Hope your family remains in good health – enjoy every day!! Regards, Phil" per email from Phil, Nov 10 2015 on 10 November 2015 at Ontario.1 He died on 29 January 2016 at Owen Sound Hospital, Owen Sound, Northern Bruce, Ontario, at age 72; "Obit for Phil Goodfellow 2016 01 29; Written by Phil only a month before his passing with dates filled in by Brenda;
Charles ‘Phil’ Goodfellow, passed peacefully at the ICU at Owen Sound Hospital on Friday, January 29th, 2016, after a 6 year battle with melanoma. Phil was born in the ‘Goodfellow’ farming community of Brighton Township to farmer/politician Bill Goodfellow (20 years at Queen’s Park) and teacher/activist Dora Philp on April 1, 1943. Four loving older sisters (Joy, Shirley, Phyllis, Ada) created a lot of feminine care and made for an ideal childhood. Visiting Dad regularly in Toronto as a teenager opened rural eyes! A thorough education in the local 1-room schoolhouse; academics/sports/music/drama at East Northumberland Secondary. Business degrees at Queen’s and York, plus Accounting degree opened a fast career path with several large Canadian companies.
At 32, Phil moved Monroe Auto Equipment to new factory in Owen Sound with progressive employee relations. As a custodial parent, Phil brought along a young daughter and son; met ‘soul mate’ Brenda Morton and her son; and together had a son –a new blended family. Moved family to Pembroke to ownership position at Storwal International in 1980; great community on the Ottawa River to raise the family. Brought teenage family to Kitchener (later to Blair) in 1987, and with life partner Brenda, set up a private management consulting firm, still in operation (too much fun to retire!). Both Brenda and Phil became specialists in the growing North American horticultural industry (‘back to the farm’), bringing professional management standards to family-owned businesses. Great fun with good clients (too much fun to retire!).
With Brenda as designer and general contractor, built ‘dream-home’ on Lake Huron in the friendly Bradley Harbour community in 2011. Both active in local community organizations, with strong opinions on political issues – love the Northern Bruce! With the passing of parents and siblings, became patriarch of great clan of nephews and nieces, spending spare time doing family genealogy (DNA proved relationship to the ancient Irish Celtic O'Neill Clan and to Neanderthals). Adopted by Brenda’s Morton clan – Barry & Donna and Bill & Sandy from Owen Sound, Dennis & Bridget from Mar; and their extended families – great fish fries! Leaving behind beloved life partner Brenda, daughter Martha Mayfield, science teacher in Mattawa (& Frank), and granddaughters Jordan and Hailey (both students at Guelph University); son Jason (& Jackie), RCMP ‘dog-man’ in Swift Current, with grandsons Jackson, in college taking Criminal Justice, and Griffin; son Steve of Cambridge, skilled tradesman on major projects in Western Canada and talented photographer; son Jeremy (& Laura) of Drumbo, successful businessman, with young grandsons Elijah and William and not to forget Angus, our bouncing Beardie! Thanks to all the great cancer doctors who helped me survive so long! Special thanks to Lion’s Head Hospital, the best in Ontario and special thanks to Dr. Thomas, Dr. Blau and RN neighbour and friend, Patty Furgal. The family wishes to add sincere thanks to the ICU at Owen Sound Hospital and especially to Kelsie for being so attentive and kind to Phil in his final hours.
Memorial donations may be made to the Lion's Head’s Hospital Auxiliary in Phil’s memory. Cremation has taken place. A ‘Celebration of Life’ will be held Sunday, May 1, 2016 between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m., Best Western Inn on the Bay, 1800 2nd Avenue East, Owen Sound. Full, happy life of over 40 years with life partner Brenda – only regret, leaving her so soon! “A time to be born, and a time to die” per email sent by Wendy Joy Bird, Feb 3 2016.
"Hi Dan, I trust this is your correct email address, as it has been saved in my email for quite a long time. It is with great sadness to advise that my Uncle Phil Goodfellow passed away on Friday, January 29th. I am compiling contact information for the local papers for his obituary and told Aunt Brenda that I would try to contact you as well. For clarification, I am one of the four daughters of Ada and Bill Lelliott. Regards, Lynn Lelliott-Barnes" from an email sent to me by Lynn Lelliot-Barnes, Jan 31 2016.1
