Garneau, that his son, Wilfrid, had died in England from an illness contracted while on active service. "Wilf", as he was familiarly known to his many friends in the city, went overseas with the 2nd E. M. R. in 1916 and was sent to Fracne a short time later with the Strathcona Horse. With his comrades he took part in the memorable Cambrai surprise battle, and was shortly afterwards invalided to England suffering from exposure.      Joseph Robert Ames was born on 30 May 1925 at Birnie, Manitoba; Date per Melvin Ames. He died on 5 July 2011 at Kelwood, Manitoba, at age 86; "AMES, Joe R. - Joe passed away at his home in Kelwood, Manitoba on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at the age of 86 years. Joe was the eldest son born to Fred and Ethel Ames on May 30th, 1925. He grew up in Riding Mountain. When he was a young man he ran heavy equipment. Joe's greatest passion was old cars. He was a plain and simple man, wasn't fancy or wasteful and he tried to find uses for everything. He liked to travel around and visit. Joe had everything in his car except the kitchen sing and he might of had that in there too. Joe was predeceased by his dad Fred, Mother Ethel, sisters Leona and Maybelle, youngest brother Elmer as well as his in laws Laurent and Alice, son in law James Spence and great grandchild Madison Beaulieu. Joe married Bernadette Beaulieu in 1963 and they raised 8 children Ruby and husband Alphonse Leclerc, Ray and wife Diana, Bonnie Spence, Connie and husband Arthur Young, Robert and wife Marian Ames, Sheila and husband Arnold Spence, Cheryl Ames and Elmer and wife Emilie Ames. Also surviving are Joe's grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and their families. Funeral Service was held on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Riding Mountain Community Hall with Pastor Roger Woywoda officiating. Interment followed at Birnie Cemetery.
