The Tweedsmuir Histories of Codrington include an Editorial as follows: Another Milestone Reached. Decision of subscribers of the Brighton Municipal Telephone System Monday evening to accept the offer to purchase the system by Bell Telephone Company marks another milestone in local history.
Telephone service first came to this village in 1883 when lines were constructed and opened for service between Belleville and Port Hope. An exchange was subsequently oppened in the jewellery store of the late W. W. Porte and a number of local professional and business men installe telephones in order to avail themselves of this new means of communicaiton.
Eventually, to meet the demand for telephone service in the surrounding rural area, Mr. Porte undertook the construction of rural lines connecting with Brighton. Westward to the Union Neighborhood, east to Smithfield and north to Spring Valley and Breeze Neighborhood these party lines were gradually extended.
At the same time the Austin Telephone Company at Wooler was extending its system in Murray Township and eventually into the central section of Brighton Township.
It was in 1913 that steps were taken to establish the Brighton Telephone System, with W. J. latimer of Orland as one of the leading personalities in the new venture. The new system acquired the lines formerly built by Mr. Porte. Lines along the front were connected with the Bell exchange in Brighton with the rest of the system being served by its own exchange in Orland.
For 46 years the Brighton Municipal Telephone System has been guided by a three-man commission, members of which have been elected annually by the subscribers. Acceptance of the offer to dispose of the system to the Bell will thus mark the close fo an epoch in the history of public ownership in telephone service in Brighton Telephone. Marking the new era will be the introduction of dial service in the Brighton area in 1960."
