Mrs. Buchanan is Elizabeth (Stuart) Buchanan and William is William Busby Buchanan, Charles Buchanan's father. They lived on the Cowie Mill Property in Norham at this time. Ben still owned the farm south of Norham although this is around when he bought the Osborne Funeral Home in Warkworth.

Alan was a veteran of the second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 380 at Warkworth. He had the rank of Sgt. Major. Alan served on the Percy Agricultural Fair Board for many years and was a past artist at coordinating the parade for several years. He took an active part when the Warkworth Community Band was formed and contributed his time and talent on the Executive. In earlier years he worked with his father in the furniture store and as a professional painter until the war. After that he started up the Warkworth 5 cents to $1 store, which he operated from 1944-1961. Through these years he server for a time as one of the Village Commissioners. Alan served on the Warkworth volunteer fire brigade for many years and received a Fireman Medal for long service which was issued by the Fire Marshal Act. During the 1960's? he was a member of the North-East Northumberland District High School Board and served as chairman for that body for a time. He has been a member of the Community Services Club, and active in all their projects. Alan was always a sports lover and played bal and hockey in his younger days and coached teams as well. In these last few years he became an enthusiastic curler and Past President of the Warkworth Curling Club. Golf became his favourite hobby in the summer months. He played in the Tuesday night men's Golf League Key Club at the Warkworth Golf Course, as well as in the couples league with his wife Edna. His Church played a big part in Alan's life, he was member of St. Paul's United Church. At present he was Clerk of Session at St. Paul's. He had been a Sunday School Teacher, on the Christian Education Committee, a member of the A.O.T.S. when it was active in St. Paul's and an Elder. ....      John Buchanan was born on 3 September 1846 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; The 1881 census lists his birthplace as Ontario. His marriage registration in 1870 lists his place of birth as Brighton and his age as 23 years. His death registration in 1887 lists his age as 41 years. If he was born in Brighton it appears that his parents moved to Ameliasburgh soon after. They live in Ameliasburgh in the 1851 census. His tombstone is not very clear. John's inscription supposedly says he was 39 years 2 months and 25 days. It seems more likely that he was 41 years 2 months and 25 days.^3,4,5 He appeared on the census of 1852 at Ameliasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Canada West; Age 5 at 1851 Census: see Robert Buchanan.⁶ He appeared on the census of April 1861 at Ameliasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Canada West; Age 13 at 1861 Census: see Robert Buchanan.⁷ He After his marriage in 1870 they moved to Asphodel Twp. where they were close to Johns parents and Elizabeth's sister (Emily who had married Thomas Wragg). Sometime after 1874 they moved to the Pickle farm (or Valentine Place per Charles Buchanan), a farm near Hilton (north of the Hwy 401 on the Brighton to Campbellford road, Hwy 30) that was owned by his brother-in- law Thomas Wragg of Belleville. He also owned lots in Codrington (Lot 1 and 2, Conc. IX, the King/Ames/Buchanan farm) and Mount Olivet (Lot 33, conc. VIII which William Valleau later bought).
The 1880 Survey shows that Thomas Wragg owned Lot 31 and 32 in Brighton Township Concession IV. This is east and a bit south of Newcomb's Mills (present day Orland) and almost to the eastern border of the township.
There are also three lots owned by the Valentine family just east of the Wragg lot.
The family stayed on this farm until about 1901 when they moved to a 135 acre farm (the Dingman farm) near Warkworth. This is Lot 10, Conc. 10 of Brighton Township, the far north west corner lot just south of Norham.

The marriage was not registered until 1873 and the number is 011427.)¹⁰ John Buchanan lived after 29 October 1870 at Asphodel Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario; After their marriage in 1870, John Buchanan and his wife Elizabeth moved to a farm in Asphodel Township, near Norwood. John's parents were nearby as was Elizabeth's sister Emily who had married Thomas Wragg. He appeared on the census of April 1871 at Ontario; John and Elizabeth are not on the 1871 Census in Brighton Twp., Asphodel Twp., Percy Twp., Murray Twp., or Ameliasburgh Twp. They were just married in October 1870 and William was not born until July 1871 - in Asphodel Twp. Their exact location in their first year of marriage is a question. He lived in 1875 at Conc 4 Lot 32, Brighton Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; John and Elizabeth moved the family to a farm east of Hilton which was owned by Thomas B. Wragg. Charles Buchanan believes that the house was in the south-west part of the Wragg property which included one 100-acre lot where the house was on the road nearer the south end and two 50-acre lots to the east and north.
Note: Charles Buchanan mentions that the home was just a short distance south-west on the road from the Stone School House which is still standing, being used as a private home in 2000.¹¹ He County Atlas shows T.B. Wragg on Lot 31 (50 acres) and 32 (100 acres) Conc 4. in 1880 at Brighton Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Ontario.¹² He County Atlas shows 3 lots occupied by the Valentine family: Concession 4 Lots 27 & 28 and Concession 5 Lot 24. This was just east of the lot indicated re Buchanan's. Charles Buchanan recalls the term "The Valentine Place" in regard to the location. At the time of his death John had been working on the Murray Canal. He died at home of consumption, which was the term used to describe tuberculosis. His death is registered as Nov 28 1887. It is registered twice -once in Murray Tsp; Reg # 011731-87 and once in Brighton Tsp; reg # 011969-87. The tombstone appears to say Nov 10 18__. His age on the death certificate is listed as 41 years. Note: John and his infant son David Lougheed Buchanan are on an old white stone that stands a few feet east of the two obelisk stones of the Carrying Place Buchanan's. It is very worn and hard to make out but the CEMSearch data shown below is discernable if you try hard. It is plainly the right stone in spite of this. Another similar stone to the east shows an Elizabeth but the rest is hard to make out but is not John's wife Elizabeth. (The above was confirmed by Dan Buchanan in July 2000.)

Note from Bill Buchanan: John is buried in the front section of the old Carrying Place Cemetery. There is a granite obelisk-shaped tombstone marking the grave. The tombstone is identical to the marker for Thomas, Henry, James T and another John Buchanan, which is right beside John's marker.
Note: The identical nature of the stones as well as their close proximity suggest that these two Buchanan families - Thomas of Carrying Place and Robert who once lived in Consecon - are closely related. It is thought that Robert and Thomas could have been brothers and that there may have been several other brothers who came to the Prince Edward Co. area around the same time. This needs to be pursued.
Note: The two obelisk stones are odd in that they contain redundant information. The newer stone to the west shows Thomas Buchanan and his wife Mary Rutledge on one side and their two young sons Henry and James on another side. The older stone to the east is covered with moss and is very hard to read. With the right light, however, the names of Thomas Buchanan on one side and his wife Ruth Rutledge on another can be made out. This information is the same as that found on one side of the other stone. John Buchanan of Brighton Twp. is not on these stones.^16,17,18

In 1897, Thomas moved to Winnipeg so it was William and Ben that farmed at Warkworth until all of their sisters were grown and had married. They then sold the farm, married, and pursued their own interests. William bought a mill in Norham, Ben bought a funeral home (the Osborne Funeral Home in Warkworth). Supposedly the 2 brothers gave each of their sisters a gift of $2000 as a wedding present.^9,10 She lived in April 1891 at Conc 4 Lot 31, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; The 1891 Census shows the Buchanan's living near Stone School, west of Hilton.¹¹ She appeared on the census of April 1891 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Age 44 at 1891 Census: Buchanan, Elizabeth, 44, b. Records suggest they had been in Norwood area since 1887 and then purchase the farm at Lot 10 Conc 10 in Dec 1896. The directory info may just be out of date. in 1896 at Brighton Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Ontario. She lived on 12 December 1896 at Cons 10 Lot 10, Brighton Twp., Northubmerland Co., Ontario; Land Registry Records Grant 6183) show that Elizabeth Buchanan (widow), William B. Buchanan and Benjamin Buchanan purchased 30 acres for $2700 from Henry Walker. There was a mortgage for $2400. (Inst. Date Dec 12 1896.
Note: This property had been owned by Jacob Dingman around 1890 although it had been sold twice since then. The place was known as "The Dingman Place". See William B. Buchanan for more info.^2,14 She By all accounts Elizabeth was a large, robust and imposing woman. Her grandchildren were intimidated by her physical presence and personality. Bill Buchanan: The 1901 census shows that Elizabeth was the head of the family with William, Minnie, Benjamin, Stella, Abigail, and Gertrude still living with their mother. Jean Adams and Charles Buchanan have them leaving this farm in 1897 but they are still in Brighton Tsp for the 1901 census.
Dan Buchanan: Lot 10 Conc 10 is the far north west lot of Brighton Twp. so they were still in Brighton Twp. after moving in 1896 to the Dingman Farm.² She lived in April 1901 at Conc 10 Lot 10, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Residence per 1901 Census: Conc 10, Lot 10, Brighton Twp.¹⁵ She lived on 23 October 1910 at Lot 10 Conc 10 Brighton Twp, Norham, Ontario; Lot 10 Conc 10: Land Registry Records show that William B. Elizabeth (Stuart) Buchanan was buried in Carrying Place Cemetery according to her Death Registation although there is no memorial. John was buried in Carrying Place, Murray Twp., near the Carrying Place Buchanan's.^16,18

The family moved to the Dingman farm in Norham sometime after 1901. in 1887 at Brighton Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Ontario, Canada.² He Charles Buchanan tells a story told to him by his father, William Busby Buchanan, who would have been 17 that year. When the father John died in November 1887, he was buried in Carrying Place. Elizabeth wanted the baby John to rest near his father so the baby's body had to be moved from the cemetery near Hilton to Carrying Place.
In the spring of 1888, when they tried to dig up the casket, the ground was still very wet and several men had a very difficult time slipping and sliding and splashing in a very grotesque scene before they were finally able to extracted the casket from the mud. This was witnessed by the 17-year-old William who must have been horrified. William often commented on his aversion to wet cemeteries and digging up caskets. in March 1888 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario. This property had been owned by Jacob Dingman around 1890 although it had been sold twice since then. The place was known as "The Dingman Place".
William, Elizabeth and Ben bought and moved the family onto a farm south of Norham. This was Lot 10, Concession 10, Brighton, at the north-west corner of the township. Norham was the closest village, just a few miles north.
The lot had been owned by Dingman's as shown in the map of Brighton Township of the 1880 Surveys. Thus, it was known as "The Dingman Farm".
The farm consisted of 135 acres and they supposedly paid $1700 for the farm. Tom had left home and moved to Winnipeg and Will and Ben worked the farm for 3 or 4 years until Will bought the mill at Norham. He then left leaving Ben to run the farm.⁹ He was Farmer: William Buchanan and his family started farming their own farm in 1896 south of Norham at Lot 10 Concession 10 Brighton Twp.

Charles Buchanan tells the story of a poor man of the community coming to the front of the mill to ask William for some work. William knew that the man had children to feed and no money. There was no work for him but William silently went into the mill and brought some food and gave it to the man. William Buchanan was known as a decent, successful man in the community. in 1905 at The Mill, Percy Twp., Norham, Northumberland Co., Ontario. Analysis: W. J. Buchanan must mean William Busby Buchanan, who has a sister and is the only W. Buchanan alive in this group in 1912. Their Aunt would be the sister of their mother (Elizabeth Stuart), Mary Ann Stuart who was the wife of Henry Hayes and lived in Carrying Place. John Buchanan would be John E. Buchanan, son of Thomas Buchanan, who lived in Carry Place as well. This confirms from another source (besides Bernice and Charles Buchanan) that Thomas Buchanan and Robert Buchanan likely were brothers - although it does not say whether William Busby Buchanan was FIRST cousin to John Buchanan or not. on 12 January 1912 at Murray Twp., Carrying Place, Northumberland Co., Ontario.¹⁰ He Witness at marriage of daughter Mary Eliza and Charles Turney on 4 September 1912 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario. Salt Creek was dammed just south of the Village of Norham and a sizeable pond - Called Cowie's Pond - was formed. William went ahead with the wagon containing their belongings while Bertha and Bernice rode the regular mail stage through stormy winter weather along the Colborne Gravel. He died on 25 June 1952 at Trenton Memorial Hospital, Trenton, Hastings Co., Ontario, at age 80; "William B. Buchanan; His many Colborne friends learned with much regret of the death of William B. Buchanan, a former resident, who died in Trenton Memorial Hospital, in his 81st year, on Wednesday evening, June 25, after a serious illness of two and one half weeks. He was born near Hastings, Ontario, the oldest son of a family of nine, of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Buchanan (nee Elizabeth Stuart). His father died when he was still a boy and he ably assisted his mother with the many family responsibilities, receiving his Public School education at the Fourth Concession School, Brighton Township. He operated a grist mill for some years at Norham. In 1922 he moved to Colborne where he engaged in farming until his retirement. After the death of his wife, in September, 1950, he went to reside with his son Charles at Codrington. His chief interests were his home and Church, being a faithful member of the United Church. He was a generous person, always had a smile and a cheery word for everyone. For many years he had been handicapped by complete deafness, an infirmity he bore with great patience and perseverance. Analysis: W. J. Buchanan must mean William Busby Buchanan, who has a sister and is the only W. Buchanan alive in this group in 1912. Their Aunt would be the sister of their mother (Elizabeth Stuart), Mary Ann Stuart who was the wife of Henry Hayes and lived in Carrying Place. John Buchanan would be John E. Buchanan, son of Thomas Buchanan, who lived in Carrying Place as well. This confirms from another source (besides Bernice and Charles Buchanan) that Thomas Buchanan and Robert Buchanan likely were brothers - although it does not say whether William Busby Buchanan was FIRST cousin to John Buchanan or not.
Note: The sister mentioned here would likely be Mary Elizabeth who was said to attend school in Trenton the year before she was married. Apparently Samuel Nesbitt was a friend of John Buchanan (Amelia's father) before he died in 1885; Bernice thinks he may have been the executor of John's estate.
