The 1880 Survey shows that Thomas Wragg owned Lot 31 and 32 in Brighton Township Concession IV. This is east and a bit south of Newcomb's Mills (present day Orland) and almost to the eastern border of the township.
There are also three lots owned by the Valentine family just east of the Wragg lot.
The family stayed on this farm until about 1901 when they moved to a 135 acre farm (the Dingman farm) near Warkworth. This is Lot 10, Conc. 10 of Brighton Township, the far north west corner lot just south of Norham.
His death registration lists his place of birth as Prince Edward Cty and his age as 41years, the age agrees with his marriage registration but his marriage registration lists his place of birth as Brighton. on 29 October 1870 at Ameliasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Ontario.8,9 He married Elizabeth Stuart, daughter of William Stuart and Mary Anne Hart, on 29 October 1870 at Anglican Church Rectory, Murray Twp., Carrying Place, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Marriage Reg'n.#011427: Groom: John Buchannon; Age: 23; Res.: Carrying Place; Born: Brighton; Status: bachelor; Occ.: labourer; Parents: Robert Buchannon & Mary A. buchannon; Bride: Elizabeth Stuart; Age: 22; Res.: Carrying Place, Amelisburgh; Born: Ireland; Status: spinster; Parents: William Stuart & Mary Stuart; Witnesses: Wm. J. Stuart & Benjamin Stuart, Carrying Place, Ameliasburgh; Date: Oct 29 1870; Place: at the Rectory, Carrying Place; Religion: Church of England; Married by: E. M. M. Baker; By License (MS932, Reel 12, #011427, Ontario Archives)
Note: (per Bill Buchanan) John's name is spelled Buchannon, his parents are listed as Robert and Mary A. and his age is 23 years. The witnesses are Wm J Stuart and Benjamin Stuart. The official was E.H.M. Baker. The marriage was registered along with other marriages performed by Rev. Baker in 1873, 72, 71, and 70 in 1873. (M.S.932, Reel 12, Prince Edward Cty, Liber E, Folio 622. The marriage was not registered until 1873 and the number is 011427.)10 John Buchanan lived after 29 October 1870 at Asphodel Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario; After their marriage in 1870, John Buchanan and his wife Elizabeth moved to a farm in Asphodel Township, near Norwood. John's parents were nearby as was Elizabeth's sister Emily who had married Thomas Wragg. He appeared on the census of April 1871 at Ontario; John and Elizabeth are not on the 1871 Census in Brighton Twp., Asphodel Twp., Percy Twp., Murray Twp., or Ameliasburgh Twp. They were just married in October 1870 and William was not born until July 1871 - in Asphodel Twp. Their exact location in their first year of marriage is a question. He lived in 1875 at Conc 4 Lot 32, Brighton Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; John and Elizabeth moved the family to a farm east of Hilton which was owned by Thomas B. Wragg. Charles Buchanan believes that the house was in the south-west part of the Wragg property which included one 100-acre lot where the house was on the road nearer the south end and two 50-acre lots to the east and north.
Note: Charles Buchanan mentions that the home was just a short distance south-west on the road from the Stone School House which is still standing, being used as a private home in 2000.11 He County Atlas shows T.B. Wragg on Lot 31 (50 acres) and 32 (100 acres) Conc 4. in 1880 at Brighton Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Ontario.12 He County Atlas shows 3 lots occupied by the Valentine family: Concession 4 Lots 27 & 28 and Concession 5 Lot 24. This was just east of the lot indicated re Buchanan's. Charles Buchanan recalls the term "The Valentine Place" in regard to the location. It was actually the Thomas Wragg farm where they lived. in 1880 at Brighton Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Ontario.12 He Hilton is Lot 3 and 4 Concession 5. Newcomb Mills (Orland) is Lot 3 Conc 7 - per County Atlas in 1880 at Brighton Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Ontario.12 He appeared on the census of April 1881 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Age 32 at 1881 Census: Buchanan, John, 32, b. Ont., farmer, married; Lyril, 33, b. Ireland, married; William, 9; Mary, 8; Benjamin, 7; Thomas, 6; Ann A., 2; Estella, 1 (1881 Census: Brighton Twp., div. 2, pg. 37, Household 182 - familysearch.org)
Note: Corey Spencer is before and James Switzer is next.13 He was Farmer: per 1881 Census in April 1881 at Brighton Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Ontario.14 He died on 28 November 1887 at Conc 4 Lot 31, Brighton Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Ontario, at age 41; Death Reg'n: John Buchanan; Died: Nov 28, 1887; Age, 41; Occupation: farmer; Born: Prince Edward Co; Cause: consumption, 1 year; Dr: Dr. Dean; Informant: Mrs. John Buchanan, Brighton Twp; Reg'd: Dec 27, 1887; C. of E; Reg'r: A. A. Becker
At the time of his death John had been working on the Murray Canal. He died at home of consumption, which was the term used to describe tuberculosis. His death is registered as Nov 28 1887. It is registered twice -once in Murray Tsp; Reg # 011731-87 and once in Brighton Tsp; reg # 011969-87. The tombstone appears to say Nov 10 18__. His age on the death certificate is listed as 41 years. His place of birth on the Murray Twp. record is listed as Ireland but the Brighton Twp. record shows Prince Edward Co., which seems more correct.11,15 He was buried on 29 November 1887 at Carrying Place Cemetery, Murray Twp, Carrying Place, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Memorial: (See Exhibit) BUCHANAN; John; 1846 - 1887; His wife; Elizabeth Stuart; 1847 - 1928; Their Son; David Lougheed; 1884 - 1886 (Carrying Place Cemetery, Carrying Place, Dec. 27, 2005, new stone erected by Rev. Charles Buchanan)
Cemetery Transcription: John Buchanan; Died Nov 28, 1887; Age 39y 2m 25d; David L; Died Sept 12 1886; Age 1y 8m 25d (Carrying Place Cemetery, Ontario Archives)
Note: John and his infant son David Lougheed Buchanan are on an old white stone that stands a few feet east of the two obelisk stones of the Carrying Place Buchanan's. It is very worn and hard to make out but the CEMSearch data shown below is discernable if you try hard. It is plainly the right stone in spite of this. Another similar stone to the east shows an Elizabeth but the rest is hard to make out but is not John's wife Elizabeth. (The above was confirmed by Dan Buchanan in July 2000.)
CEMSearch: Name: John Buchanan; Born: - ; Died: 1887-11-28; Age: 39y 2m 25d; Notes: H/O (not shown) & F/O David L. Buchanan ( - 1886); Buried: The Carrying Place Cemetery, located in the county of Northumberland in Murray Township on Conc C Lot 9; There is 1 other name on the same stone or plot: David L. Buchanan ( - 1925)
Note from Bill Buchanan: John is buried in the front section of the old Carrying Place Cemetery. There is a granite obelisk-shaped tombstone marking the grave. The tombstone is identical to the marker for Thomas, Henry, James T and another John Buchanan, which is right beside John's marker.
Note: The identical nature of the stones as well as their close proximity suggest that these two Buchanan families - Thomas of Carrying Place and Robert who once lived in Consecon - are closely related. It is thought that Robert and Thomas could have been brothers and that there may have been several other brothers who came to the Prince Edward Co. area around the same time. This needs to be pursued.
Note: The two obelisk stones are odd in that they contain redundant information. The newer stone to the west shows Thomas Buchanan and his wife Mary Rutledge on one side and their two young sons Henry and James on another side. The older stone to the east is covered with moss and is very hard to read. With the right light, however, the names of Thomas Buchanan on one side and his wife Ruth Rutledge on another can be made out. This information is the same as that found on one side of the other stone. John Buchanan of Brighton Twp. is not on these stones.16,17,18

In 1897, Thomas moved to Winnipeg so it was William and Ben that farmed at Warkworth until all of their sisters were grown and had married. They then sold the farm, married, and pursued their own interests. William bought a mill in Norham, Ben bought a funeral home (the Osborne Funeral Home in Warkworth). In the spring of 1888, when they tried to dig up the casket, the ground was still very wet and several men had a very difficult time slipping and sliding and splashing in a very grotesque scene before they were finally able to extracted the casket from the mud. This was witnessed by the 17-year-old William who must have been horrified. William often commented on his aversion to wet cemeteries and digging up caskets. in March 1888 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario. He appeared on the census of April 1891 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Age 19 at 1891 Census: see Elizabeth Buchanan.8 He was Buchanan, W. This property had been owned by Jacob Dingman around 1890 although it had been sold twice since then. The place was known as "The Dingman Place".
William, Elizabeth and Ben bought and moved the family onto a farm south of Norham. This was Lot 10, Concession 10, Brighton, at the north-west corner of the township. Norham was the closest village, just a few miles north.
The lot had been owned by Dingman's as shown in the map of Brighton Township of the 1880 Surveys. Thus, it was known as "The Dingman Farm".
The farm consisted of 135 acres and they supposedly paid $1700 for the farm. Tom had left home and moved to Winnipeg and Will and Ben worked the farm for 3 or 4 years until Will bought the mill at Norham. He then left leaving Ben to run the farm.9 He was Farmer: William Buchanan and his family started farming their own farm in 1896 south of Norham at Lot 10 Concession 10 Brighton Twp.
Bill Buchanan: About 1901 the family bought the Dingman farm outside of Norham. The farm consisted of 135 acres and they supposedly paid $1700 for the farm. Tom had left home and moved to Winnipeg and Will and Ben worked the farm for 3 or 4 years until Will bought the mill at Norham. He then left leaving Ben to run the farm. on 12 December 1896 at Conc 10 Lot 10, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario.2 He appeared on the census of April 1901 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Age 29 at 1901 Census: see Elizabeth (Stuart) Buchanan (mother.)4 He lived in 1905 at The Mill, Percy Twp., Norham, Northumberland Co., Ontario; William bought and moved to the mill in Norham. The mill was located on the south side of the village where the dam held back the waters of Salt Creek. He was William operated the mill in Norham until 1921 when he sold the mill and moved the family to Colborne.
Charles Buchanan tells the story of a poor man of the community coming to the front of the mill to ask William for some work. William knew that the man had children to feed and no money. There was no work for him but William silently went into the mill and brought some food and gave it to the man. William Buchanan was known as a decent, successful man in the community. in 1905 at The Mill, Percy Twp., Norham, Northumberland Co., Ontario. He lived on 12 January 1905 at Lot 10 Conc 10, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Lot 10 Conc 10: Land Registry Records show that the mortgage on this property was discharged.9 He lived on 23 October 1910 at Lot 10 Conc 10, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Lot 10 Conc 10: Land Registry Records show that William B. Buchanan and Elizabeth Buchanan (widow) sold their share in the property to Benjamin Buchanan for $2700.9 He appeared on the census of 12 June 1911 at Brighton Twp., Codrington, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Age 38 at 1911 Census: see Benjamin Buchanan (brother.)3 He "Carrying Place: W. J. Buchanan and sister were the guests of their Aunt, Mrs. Hayes and cousin Jno Buchanan last week." from The Brighton Ensign, Jan 12, 1924, see at The Ontario Archives, Jan 3, 2001
Analysis: W. J. Buchanan must mean William Busby Buchanan, who has a sister and is the only W. Buchanan alive in this group in 1912. Their Aunt would be the sister of their mother (Elizabeth Stuart), Mary Ann Stuart who was the wife of Henry Hayes and lived in Carrying Place. John Buchanan would be John E. Buchanan, son of Thomas Buchanan, who lived in Carry Place as well. This confirms from another source (besides Bernice and Charles Buchanan) that Thomas Buchanan and Robert Buchanan likely were brothers - although it does not say whether William Busby Buchanan was FIRST cousin to John Buchanan or not. on 12 January 1912 at Murray Twp., Carrying Place, Northumberland Co., Ontario.10 He Witness at marriage of daughter Mary Eliza and Charles Turney on 4 September 1912 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario. It was sold "... with all machinery acc. to deed & all lands overflowed as per deed." There was a mortgage of $1,600 held by John Service. (Instrument 7893) This property appears to have included a mill as early as 1874 when Erastus Blair sold it to George B. Boyce. The name of Robert Cowie is included along the way to give the place it's familiar name, although others owned it at times including James Pierson, William Burley, John Douglas and, as above, Robert Langford (in 1908). Salt Creek was dammed just south of the Village of Norham and a sizeable pond - Called Cowie's Pond - was formed. There is very little remaining on the site today.9 He "Morganston: John Buchanan has purchased the Norham Mill and is now running it." from The Brighton Ensign, Jan. 10, 1913, seen on microfilm at The Ontario Archives, Nov. 28, 2001

He was born near Hastings, Ontario, the oldest son of a family of nine, of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Buchanan (nee Elizabeth Stuart). After the death of his wife, in September, 1950, he went to reside with his son Charles at Codrington. His chief interests were his home and Church, being a faithful member of the United Church. He was a generous person, always had a smile and a cheery word for everyone. For many years he had been handicapped by complete deafness, an infirmity he bore with great patience and perseverance.
Buchanan, son of Thomas Buchanan, who lived in Carrying Place as well. This confirms from another source (besides Bernice and Charles Buchanan) that Thomas Buchanan and Robert Buchanan likely were brothers - although it does not say whether William Busby Buchanan was FIRST cousin to John Buchanan or not.
Note: The sister mentioned here would likely be Mary Elizabeth who was said to attend school in Trenton the year before she was married. William Busby probably took her to Trenton after visiting at Carrying Place. on 12 January 1912 at Murray Twp., Carrying Place, Northumberland Co., Ontario.7 She She took a 1 year course in dressmaking (in Trenton) before she was married. before 4 September 1912 at Trenton, Hastings Co., Ontario.8 As of 4 September 1912, Mary Elizabeth "Minnie" Buchanan was also known as Turney.1 She married Charles Taggart Turney, son of William Turney and Charlotte McClelland, on 4 September 1912 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Marriage Reg'n: Groom: Charles Taggart Turney; Age: 48: Res.: Cramahe Twp; Occ.: farmer; Status: widower; Parents: William Turney, farmer & Charlotte McLelland; Bride: Mary Eliza Buchanan; Age: 38; Res.: Brighton Twp; Status: spinster; Parents: John Buchanan & Elizabeth Buchanan; Date: 4 Sept 1912; Place: Brighton Twp; Performed by: Rev. Needless to say, the family was not very happy about this development. Apparently Samuel Nesbitt was a friend of John Buchanan (Amelia's father) before he died in 1885; Bernice thinks he may have been the executor of John's estate. In any case, he offered to board Amelia in the Main St., Brighton home. (Dec. 28, 2006, Dan Buchanan visit with Bernice Brown) circa 1897 at Main St., Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario. She Amelia went to high school in Warkworth, Brighton and Belleville before getting married at the age of 18. Carlton Fraleigh moved to Conc 3, Lot 33 after selling Lot 4, Conc 9 west of Codrington in 1878 and John Buchanan had moved to Conc 4, Lot 31 in 1875 after he and his parents had moved from Ameliasburgh to Asphodel Twp. in 1871.1,10 Amelia Anne Buchanan appeared on the census of April 1901 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Age 22 at 1901 Census: see Benjamin Fraleigh.11 She lived circa 1905 at Saskatchewan; Moved to Saskatchewan.
