I have a month every year if I want it as I have been there so long, this is my thirteenth year at the same nursing home. I get pretty tired but as Jack is so good he is retired and he look after the ste. And we have his youngest son living with us he is twenty-two so all I do is plan the meals and he dose the cooking, washing and cleaning. All I do is the ?ironing? and baking so I do pretty well. I also make good money which does not go a miss those days. I am going to try and talk him into going east this fall if I can, but he has children at he west coast as well, so kind of have a hard time. But he has a brother and sister living in Toronto. He has seven children, all married, but the one with us and of course I have three with only Ruth single and you know how girls are. They went to get out on there own. So she lives up town near her work. She work for C.C.M. Bill, the oldest, is married and has one little girl 2 years tomorrow. Louise has three boys and one girl, so we are all one big happy family. Well, my dear, if you ever make up your mind to come to Winnipeg, don't forget, we will always welcome you and family with open arms. If I do get Jack to go east this year, we are sure going to look up some of you people this time. I have told Ethel as long as she keeps coming down we will not go to Kelowna and she is coming in May this year and then going down east to see her sister. "6 Forin St., Belleville, Ont. K8N 2H6; April 14, 1980; What a shock you'll get when you have a letter from me! Guess you could say I've been out of the mainstream ever since that terrible accident on Dec. 3, 1978, and now I am just beginning to come out of hibernation after fighting a Virus A flu bug, which has felled me for the past 5 weeks. I'm allergic to about everything under the sun, but was forced to submit to a powerful antibiotic called Keflex for 6 days to get the thing under control and after taking it for 3 or 4 days I reacted with a Yeast infection, so am just about finished treatment for that, which required another powerful tablet. the damaged right leg from the accident responded nicely to the damaged ligament, after 5 mos. in therapy; taking my mile walk every morning and doing three basic exercises 3x each day, but the 3 damaged nerves leading into the spine from the seat-belt injury are still in the process of being regenerated and now I'm back into therapy again for the back treatments, which consist of hot clay packs for 30 min. 3x a week. Clara went back into hospital for a second operation on her crushed It. thigh in December, a year after the accident; was in Oshawa for a couple of months, then sent to her home here, but she couldn't handle the taxi ride to hospital for therapy, and entered hospital about 6 weeks ago to be handy to therapy, and she's still in extended care. She still uses 2 crutches, and I don't think therapy is helping. Bud and Pat were down from Walkerton this past week-end, and we (he and Pat, Annabel & Norm, Doug and I) had a conference yesterday, and all feel that she'll have to sell her home and go to a nursing home. I think of you so often, and wonder when you'll be making another trip East. How about this year? We're having a wedding in the family Aug. 2nd - our baby, 32 years old, is marrying a very sweet young thing and we'll be attending that one for sure, God willing. Would you like to make the trip to take it in? We'll be motoring down a week or two before the big day, and you better plan to come along. Let me know in plenty of time if you can make it.
Doug and I are preparing to leave for Saint John this coming Friday or Saturday. I've had pressing business to look after down there since last November, so am a bit frustrated thinking about the delays. In November Doug and I flew to Cuba for 2 weeks; then in February my three women friends and I flew to Miami Beach for 2 weeks; then I got the Flu, so there have been many reasons why I didn't make my important Eastern trip. One other reason I'm writing at this point is to ask you to do me a favour. I can't lay my hands on a Winnipeg phone book, and I need to get the address of
the RENAWARE Distributors Ltd. When we were living in Saint John about 24 or 25 years ago we bought their stainless steel cooking utensils, and the head office was in Calgary. The knobs, handles and discs are guaranteed for a lifetime, and one of the handles to one of the pots needs to be replaced. When I tried to get their addresses in Calgary, Toronto, London, Montreal and Winnipeg I learned that all had folded up except the Winnipeg one and all I could get for that one is (Purdue St., Fort Gary, Winnipeg) but I feel I need a better address when writing. Could you get that for me out of your phone book? Sure would appreciate it, and in the meantime trust this finds you enjoying life. Do come to the wedding. A few years ago, I visited her and Jack Cartman when they were living in Apt. 395, 260 Nassau St., Winnipeg, and, if I recall, once after he died. Three years ago, your mother came East by train and stayed with me, when she met several of her cousins, their wives and husbands. During her visit we drove to the East Coast to visit our two sons in Saint John, M.B., and lola went with us. She always kept in touch at Christmas until the last couple of years. On Dec. 3, 1978 I was involved in a very serious car accident and suffered internal and leg injuries, and was in shock for months, so I don't have much recollection of Christmas 1978, but, on looking over my 1979 cards, discovered I hadn't heard from lola. I wrote her and posted it Apr. 14, 1980, but the letter was returned in May marked "Moved". Last month I wrote to the four Cartmans listed in the Winnipeg Telephone Directory, and recently received a reply from a Mr. A. Dora Aikins doesn't drive you knew she had a slight stroke. We called there the last time we were down and Fred and Frank had just come home from their fishing trip all summer. A Mrs. Lee's son from here married Doris Aikins and I hear from her that Frank has been in hospital. Earl and I have bad colds the first this winter. I knot socks for red cross about all I have done this winter and may not be able to much longer as both my thumbs are stiff from arthritis. Do you have any arthritis or rheumatism?

Same with my T.V. in December so I have had a lot extra expenses lately. Think I'll be lucky if I do get east this year. We are having a rainy day but have been very lucky, should not complain. February was really a nice month this year. As I am president of our Senior Citizens Association I am kept busy with that and my secretary has been very sick also. Bev called me yesterday as she got her mail first. I was beginning to get anxious and Norm was too. Bev thinks even great grand children won't even attend as its going to be so crowded. She is having a sitter and she wanted me to let you count on her and Moe. I have had my chest reaction (cold) again this year. I'm beginning to wonder if I come from a long line of hereditary in that respect. I got a new drug Dr. Hartt ordered for me. After the first dose I went to bed but 2 hours after I took the second one I took a very sharp feeling that went to my brain back to the arm and the ends of my fingers. I took sick to my stomach and was talking to Babe on the phone. I had to leave an lay down. After ten minutes I was fine. So I ended up just taking one dose at night. I went up to the Dr. the following Friday for my lame arm and a check. He wouldn't do anything for my arm but I finally asked him for some diet pills which I got two dozen of. Said I should weigh 147 so I have some more to go. Norm is in Peterboro today getting his kit filled p with tools again. He has been at Healey Falls working and seems well. He gave up beer from Jan 4 to last weekend and I think he lost quite a lot. He likes outdoor work so much.
Well Jean I found all our pink and white decorations which I had for Bev's wedding. I don't know if they would be usable or not. He has a new truck now so perhaps we can use the car for our needs during the week. I also have this table Norm made me at Christmas. Norm could put it on the truck.
I think probably you are right about Aunt Minnie. I am sorry for her. Now Jean I will drop a line if I think of anything. I am sure it will all work out. Mrs. Prestman was very kind and she has her own car. She drove us to Fergus and Orton and we were invited to her home twice. Beth had a birthday and Bill bought a while meal for nine people. It cost ten dollars, but we sure enjoyed it. Her mother made a bit two-layer cake with candles. They all gave her gifts. I was doing a cushion with the yarn and huck toweling you purchases and she was delighted with it. The colors matched her living room walls. Bill intends tiling my kitchen ceiling. It may be at Easter. Beth expecting in July. I think she is to ambitious for her strength. We made bread and buns. She is a good cook and a sewer, made her sister Karen a waist for her birthday. They took me to the barn to see their pigs. (Priestmans) I never saw so many pigs in one barn. Bill had a sow had eighteen little ones, but the weather was cold and eight died. They are fixing up an old house with high ceilings and cold but I was feeling really well and no colds. Well Rex phones to tell me he would take me to Clara's. That was last Sunday. She is as busy as ever. We are planning on going next Saturday if all goes well.
Our weather is so changeable, 42 degrees today. It may be storming tomorrow. Res is planning on building a new home in Walkerton as that house will be torn down. I heard a new Post Office would be built there. We heard from Annabel. I don't think she is feeling well. She has trouble with her arm.
I had a letter from Aaron. We wrote Steve to build fires. I hope he is better. I wrote Myrtle Chesterfield but I'm thinking she is not in her home. Mrs. Wootton is staying with till Easter, her birthday is the 17th of March. I suppose Doug and Mark arrived safely. I enjoyed seeing them and Mrs. Anderson. When are you coming up? I do hope our weather will warm up. We have no snow up here. Our one violet has never stopped blooming, one in bud. Frances spent the weekend here, she is fairly well. She needs glasses.

But Saturday morning had to go and Oh boy I got a cab to within half a short block of the home and it took me nearly half an hour to walk that short way. The snow was about 3 feet deep and in drifts to around five feet. I felt as if I had did a days work before I ever got started and I never did get home Saturday, had to work two eight hour shifts in a row and have not got over that as yet. I do not get any holidays until Oct. Will have three week then and am going to take a week in May to get rested for the summer.
I have a month every year if I want it as I have been there so long, this is my thirteenth year at the same nursing home. I get pretty tired but as Jack is so good he is retired and he look after the ste. And we have his youngest son living with us he is twenty-two so all I do is plan the meals and he dose the cooking, washing and cleaning. All I do is the ?ironing? and baking so I do pretty well. I also make good money which does not go a miss those days. I am going to try and talk him into going east this fall if I can, but he has children at he west coast as well, so kind of have a hard time. But he has a brother and sister living in Toronto. He has seven children, all married, but the one with us and of course I have three with only Ruth single and you know how girls are. They went to get out on there own. So she lives up town near her work. She work for C.C.M. Bill, the oldest, is married and has one little girl 2 years tomorrow. Louise has three boys and one girl, so we are all one big happy family. Well, my dear, if you ever make up your mind to come to Winnipeg, don't forget, we will always welcome you and family with open arms. If I do get Jack to go east this year, we are sure going to look up some of you people this time. I have told Ethel as long as she keeps coming down we will not go to Kelowna and she is coming in May this year and then going down east to see her sister. It has seemed a long winter with us and will be glad to see the grass growing. I have tulips coming up. The violets you gave me are lovely but they all grow too large with me, perhaps I water them too much, but Earl keeps the furnace too high. I had a lovely ?reunion? for my birthday in Feb and the girls brought me a Chinese dinner and cake. Doris has just passed her 25 years with G.E. and they gave her some kind of a pin and in summer take them on a bus trip. We were all there for a family party the 10th dec. before ?Venra? went to Florida to spend Xmas with Jack's mother and sister. I went to our county Presbyterial in Simcoe with some ladies and it was a nice day out. I hear from a Mrs. Lee here that Dora Aikins has been in hospital. Her son married Doris Aikins and I met them. So few of the old ones left at Centenary. My Uncle Allan Davis? Had a large plot in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto and my cousin Eleanor the only one left of the family offered the rest of the plot to me so Marion and family and we have it. I seem to be the only member of my family interested so Auntie had said it was to be mine when I seen her at Christmas. It is very important to me so wanted to remind you and ask if you would please return it to Auntie of me. My husband was moved from St. John's Nfld. In August to Halifax. We did enjoy Nfld. Which is home to him & I still think of as home. Since we kept our cottage in the Laurentians, I was their most summer & fall & up until the wedding. You will note that Benjamin Stuart had one surviving son, Tom, as of 1966. He would be your 1st cousin. I recall you mother, I believe, telling me in 1966 that he living in the States. Have you any information which might assist me in tracing him and his family? Also, could you supply me with the Pearson history, and Stuarts, as well as your own? Your mother and mine were 1st cousins, making your mother my 2nd cousin, so you and I are 3rd cousins, making us kissing cousins. My husband and I are in the transition stage. We both grew up near Belleville, both our mothers live here; we've been in Saint John for 24 years, have a summer place near the sea, which agrees with Doug's hay fever during the season. Your letter and family tree came at an interesting time for me. My father died a year ago (just six days short of 100) and it was only last month that his estate was settled. I sold the family home in Campbellford but before doing so I disposed of the contents here and there. I didn't have time to go over all the little items which I thought might interest me, so I stuffed them in boxes and brought them back to Ottawa. This past week my wife has been a craft instructor in a girls' camp in Quebec (she is also very interested in art as I gather you are too) and I have had some time to sort through some of my collections from Campbellford. The batch I got into last night included several items that my mother put away when my grandfather died in 1939 and I doubt if they have been disturbed since. For example, (1) the funeral card of my great uncle William John Stuart (No. 1 on your family tree) - died March 20, 1924 at the age of 85. I didn't know (or remember) that he was married until I noted it on your family tree. (2) The marriage certificate of my grandfather David Christopher Stuart to Abbie Valleau (No. IX on your family tree) - Dec 22 1880. (3) The funeral car of my grandmother - April 8, 1924 at the age of 65. (4) A picture of one of the Stuart picnics at Cobourg. I am enclosing it, I thought you might be interested. I don't know what year it is or even whether I was there or not, but I recognize my grandfather, Ben Buchanan (4), one of the Nie girls. Perhaps you will recognize some others. I would like it back sometime at your convenience. As I came upon such items as this, I thought how unfortunate it is that we come upon them too late. There were letters from the Pearsons in Rochester dated 1939 when my grandfather was in hospital with his broken hip. Unfortunately, I don't have Nellie's address. She would certainly be glad to supply all the information on the Pearson family. She might even have some information on Tom Stuart. She and my sister-in-law, Helen, keep close contact. Perhaps you have already been in touch with her for some of the other information. It is very possible that she might be interested in a copy of the family tree for her daughter, Mary K. Her address is: Mrs. Helen Anderson, Campbellford, Ont. Now for what little information I can add: My grandfather, David Christopher Stuart was born in 1959 and died in 1939 at 81. My mother was born in 1886 and died in 1969 at 83. My father was born in 1871 and died in 1971 - 100 ears less 6 days. My brother Stuart Alexander was born in 1912 and died in 1954 aged 41. He married Helen Thomas in 1936. They have two daughters: Laura Lee born in 1938 (I think) She is a mongolion child and has been in a provincial hospital for the retarded for many years; and Mary K., born in 1948. She is a school teacher and is unmarried. Now, for myself. I was born in 1920, married Geertruide Emsbroek (a girl I met in Holland during the war) in 1947. We have 3 boys and 1 girl. David Christopher (named after his grandfather Stuart) born 1948 - unmarried (He is an artist - in-embryo by the way). James Charles, born 1950, Ian Alexander born 1951, Audrey Elizabeth born 1952, all unmarried. Although I never knew the Stuart side of the family so well, I liked what I knew of it and I would appreciate knowing when and where the Stuart Picnic is to be held. Now that I am getting older I find that the things of the past are holding more interest for me. I still have fairly deep roots in Northumberland and an excuse for a yearly pilgrimage back will no doubt become more and more attractive to me. I am also enclosing a picture of my father and mother on their 60th wedding anniversary in 1969. My mother died 3 months later of a pulmonary embolus following a minor operation. My father lived until 1971 - mostly alone - when he died following a stroke. You may keep this picture if you wish. I am not sure that I have ever met you but I look forward to that occasion and I would like to thank you for your efforts in giving the tree the "tender loving care" which I am sure will ensure its survival. If so, please pass it on. My beloved Mother died suddenly August 18th, after a week in hospital in a coma. She attended the Picnic Aug. 6th, as did I, and was the Belle of the Ball, but got a nasty sunburn on her face and head (without a hat) which she said was quite painful. I left for the East the following Tuesday, when we had a wonderfully poignant farewell. Clara said she complained on Friday of a terrible headache, lapsed into a coma shortly after; died one week later and was burled August 21st. Life won't be the same without her T.L.C. and words of wisdom. Trust you and yours are all well. Do bring me up to date, and let's stay in touch. I recall saying to her, "Well, Mother, she had been an invalid for a long while, and I'm sure she was happy to be at rest!"
So now I wish to convey my sympathy to you and yours in the loss of your loved one. Six years ago last March, when we celebrated Mother's 86th birthday at the hotel in Colborne, it was the wish of Kent, Alan and Charles Buchanan that we reactivate the Stuart Family Picnic, and in August that year this wish was realized. Also, then, I was asked to prepare a History of the Stuart Clan in the New World. Distance from the core (Ontario) was my biggest detractor, but this year I did get it to the Rough Draft stage, with many, many missing links. But the wheels of the gods keep grinding, and now back to "The Clans" Jay Anderson wrote me a most informative run-down of his branch, in which ho stated you and Nellie(Pearson) Randall keep close contact. Her mother (Mary Stuart Pearson) had 5 children, as is noted on the enclosed Rough Draft. I have filled in the relevant data supplied by jay, and in his letter he also mentions that Nellie Randall might even have some information on Tom Stuart. I have been trying for a long while to locate Tom Stuart. If unable to, then William* Stuart*s line ceases to be. If he is located, but has no son, or sons, to carry on, then that signals the end of the line. In any event, I would dearly love to write the final chapter by filling in my Great Uncle Ben's lineage. I mailed Helen Anderson a copy of the History, as you suggested, but haven't heard from her to date - it takes time, I know. My Mother was the belle of the ball at the Picnic on Aug. 6th, but didn't wear a hat and suffered a severe sunburn, albeit was overcast, on her face, which she said that night and the next day was very painful. I got a burn too, but it didn't bother me. On Tuesday I left for the East; on Friday 1 hour after Doug and I left for Camp, my sister 'phoned to say "other had complained of a severe headache that A.M., shortly after lapsed into a coma; taken to hospital at 8:30 P.M., where she died exactly 7 days later without regaining consciousness. I went up on Monday, and was there when she died, '"e buried her August 21st, and life will never be the same without her t.l.c. and words of wisdom. But that's life, and the show must go on. Doug retired August 31st, for health reasons at the age of 56. We plan to move to Belleville next year into a town house which his Uncle left him. Our baby, Mark (age 24) left here a week ago Thursday for Marrakech on a buying trip, his third since last Oct., and Doug will join him as soon as he gets his second Cholera shot this coming week. Mark will be gone 6 weeks, and Doug will return when he Goes. I've been to Europe and the British Isles twice, so shall keep the home fires burning, and perhaps head for P.E.I. for a change of scenery. Thought you might be following Susan Buchanan's performance at the Olympics. She's on the Gymnastics team. Kent and Nan flew over for the Games. They live at 2683 Colmar St., Ottawa. He farmed at Rosewood, Manitoba, he married Evelyn Louise Chalmers Nov 9 1907. Myself, Iolah Elizabeth was born Mar 15, 1910. Gordon Victor was born May 24, 1911. He sold the farm and we moved to Winnipeg April 1, 1920 and worked for CPR until he was 67 years old. He remarried Ethel Gamond Feb 14 1936. I married Horace Kelly on June 4, 1934 and William Thomas was born Feb 26 1936.

Jack and I moved into this lovely Senior Citizens home last April and have no stairs to climb and the rent is a lot better for us. When I was working we made out fine but then I got arthritis. It started in my foot now that is OK, but have it in my hands and shoulders that is why my writing is so bad. I try to keep my hands busy as that is the only thing that will help. Jack has not been well for some years, has heart condition, but it has improved since we moved here. But the Dr. dose not want him to travel no more than 50 miles at a time as he really is not up it. We have bought a house in Florida & plan to spend the winters there & summers at our cottage in the Laurentians. We will keep our pass & privileges so will be back to Montreal for Xmas and any other occasions that should arise. In that way, we are very fortunate. Max is now doing his last tour of Eastern Region & I joined him this weekend in St. John's Nfld. We were there for 11 months starting in 1969 & loved every minute of it. The people are wonderful. Air at Calgary is home this week and we are so pleased even though the visit is short. He was in Vancouver for five years but got a transfer back to Malton when Walter was so ill a year ago. Guess you could say I've been out of the mainstream ever since that terrible accident on Dec. 3, 1978, and now I am just beginning to come out of hibernation after fighting a Virus A flu bug, which has felled me for the past 5 weeks. I'm allergic to about everything under the sun, but was forced to submit to a powerful antibiotic called Keflex for 6 days to get the thing under control and after taking it for 3 or 4 days I reacted with a Yeast infection, so am just about finished treatment for that, which required another powerful tablet. the damaged right leg from the accident responded nicely to the damaged ligament, after 5 mos. in therapy; taking my mile walk every morning and doing three basic exercises 3x each day, but the 3 damaged nerves leading into the spine from the seat-belt injury are still in the process of being regenerated and now I'm back into therapy again for the back treatments, which consist of hot clay packs for 30 min. 3x a week. Clara went back into hospital for a second operation on her crushed It. thigh in December, a year after the accident; was in Oshawa for a couple of months, then sent to her home here, but she couldn't handle the taxi ride to hospital for therapy, and entered hospital about 6 weeks ago to be handy to therapy, and she's still in extended care. She still uses 2 crutches, and I don't think therapy is helping. Bud and Pat were down from Walkerton this past week-end, and we(he and Pat, Annabel & Norm, Doug and I) had a conference yesterday, and all feel that w she'll have to sell her home and go to a nursing home. I think of you so often, and wonder when you'll be making another trip East. How about this year? We're having a wedding in the family Aug. 2nd — our baby, 32 years old, is marrying a very sweet young thing and we'll be attending that one for sure, God willing. Would you like to make the trip to take it in? We'll be motoring down a week or two before the big day, and you better plan to come along. Let me know in plenty of time if you can make it.
Doug and I are preparing to leave for Saint John this coming Friday or Saturday. I've had pressing business to look after down there since last November, so am a bit frustrated thinking about the delays. In November Doug and I flew to Cuba for 2 weeks; then in February my three women friends and I flew to Miami Beach for 2 weeks; then I got the Flu, so there have been many reasons why I didn't make my important Eastern trip. One other reason I'm writing at this point is to ask you to do me a favour. I can't lay my hands on a Winnipeg phone book, and I need to get the address of
the RENAWARE Distributors Ltd. When we were living in Saint John about 24 or 25 years ago we bought their stainless steel cooking utensils, and the head office was in Calgary. The knobs, handles and discs are guaranteed for a lifetime, and one of the handles to one of the pots needs to be replaced. When I tried to get their addresses in Calgary, Toronto, London, Montreal and Winnipeg I learned that all had folded up except the Winnipeg one and all I could get for that one is (Purdue St., Fort Gary, Winnipeg) but I feel I need a better address when writing.
