Mary "Ann" Bowles1,2,3

F, b. 1817, d. 28 July 1887
FatherJohn Bowles b. 1779
MotherAnn Mills b. 1775
Mary "Ann" Bowles was born in 1817 at Ireland; The 1851 census has her listed as 5 years younger than Robert, but the 1861 and the 1871 census list them as the same age.
Note: I have decided to place Mary Ann (Bowles) Buchanan with John Bowles and Ann Mills as the most likely scenario. There is no documentation to support this other than general info re date and proximity. If anyone has better info re this, please let me know. (Dan Buchanan, July 6 2021.)4,5 She married Robert Buchanan, son of Mr. Buchanan and ? ?, before December 1845 at Brighton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; Ann's surname is found in only two places (so far) but it is different in each case. In James's Death Registration, it is Bowles. In George's Marriage Registration it is Butler. This needs to be researched.
Note: St. Paul's Anglican Church in Brighton was destroyed by fire in 1914 which may have destroyed the record of Robert and Anne's marriage. They were Church of England.
"St. Paul's Anglican Church, 48 Sanford Street: St. Paul's Anglican Church was established in 1862 but traces of the Anglican Community date back to 1836. ... Prior to the erection of St. Paul's, services were held in the Old Presbyterian Church on Young Street. Following a fire in 1914, which destroyed early records of the church, electricity was installed and a Choir Vestry was added." (from "A History of Brighton - Churches" on the web page of The Independent, East Northumberland's Weekly Newspaper.)6,5 As of before December 1845, Mary "Ann" Bowles was also known as Buchanan.6,5 She British Colonist of Toronto (1840-1848) shows these words at the end of a marriage notice: "... youngest daughter of Joseph Bowles, Brighton (Rev. Thomas Buchanan)
Note: If it is the same family this girl could be Ann's younger sister. Need to establish a connection. in 1848 at Brighton, Northumberland Co., Canada West. She appeared on the census of 1852 at Ameliasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Canada West; Age 30 at 1851-2 Census: see Robert Buchanan.7 She Christian Guardian shows a marriage record (1851 - 1854): On Tues evening 15 inst. at the residence of the bride's father, Christopher G. Valleau and Jane Ann, eldest daughter of John Bowles, all of Brighton (Rev. W. S. Blackstock
Note: This may be same family as Ann but later generation - ie, her niece. circa 1854 at Brighton, Northumberland Co., Canada West. She 1857 Directory of Ontario shows Bowles, W & J, Brighton, shoemakers
Note: Is this Ann's family?? It might explain why John's birth shows as Brighton before they were in Ameliasburgh. Needs to be proven. in 1857 at Brighton, Northumberland Co., Canada West. She appeared on the census of April 1861 at Ameliasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Canada West; Age 42 at 1861 Census: see Robert Buchanan.8 She appeared on the census of April 1871 at Asphodel Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario; Age 54 at 1871 Census: see Robert Buchanan.9 She appeared on the census of April 1881 at Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Age 67 at 1881 Census: see George Buchanan. She appears in the 1881 census living with George on a farm in Percy Tsp. They appear to have lived here since 1877 because on his marriage registration in 1877 James lists his occupation as a farmer in Percy Tsp. It would also appear that Robert is dead at this point.10 She died on 28 July 1887 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Death Reg'n #011951: Name: Ann Buchanan; Died: July 28 1887; Age: 73 years; Rank: Wife of Robert Buchanan; Born: Ireland; Cause: summer complaint, 2 weeks; Phys.: Dr. Sanford; Certified: James Buchanan, Brighton Twp; Reg'd: July 30, 1887; Rel.: Church of England; Reg'r: A. A. Brecker
Note: It appears that Ann was living in Brighton Twp. with James at the time of her death. James is listed as the witness; he lived on the north side of Brighton Village. The cause of death was "summer complaint" - not sure what tha means. One minor discrepancy is that her age is listed as 73 years.11 She was buried on 30 July 1887 at Ontario; No burial info re Ann has been found. It might be expected that she was buried in the Norwood-Asphodel Cemetery with her husband Robert. There is no memorial for her there or in Brighton where James is buried.

Cemetary in Pacific County. This site is marked bya Rhododendron but no
marker at this time. All of her children are deceased but some ofher
grandchildren and many ggchildren are still living. The family is named
Wells after about 1890, and we have no trace of David Buchanan after about
1888 in Nebraska." per email from Jim Wells, May 5, 2002.
He "I have no knowledge of David Buchanan after the birth of Weir (Bill) in 1887, near Omaha Nebraska or Lansing Michigan. We just don't know. I speculate that David and Margaret separated about then and her youngest son, James Edward Wells was born near Lansing, about 1899. David is still shown as "S" and Susie as "W".4 He married Susie ? circa 1918 at Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A; Marriage per 1920 Census. They were living together for both 1900 and 1920 Census but not shown as married.4 David Buchanan appeared on the census of 6 January 1920 at Ward 6, Dist. 374, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A; Age 61 at 1920 Census: Buchanan, Wm., 61, b. Note: It appears as if David Buchanan has married Susie Jarvis who he was living with for both the 1900 and 1910 Census. In this case, he uses the given name "Wm." - wonder why??? He also says he was born in Canada with French as language, same for both parents???4 He died circa 1930 at Chicago, U.S.A; "There are several William Buchanans who died in Cook County (Chicago area) who could be our David Buchanan in the 1930s time frame, within a decade or so, but Cook Co. doesn't release the records without a fee & nothing shows in the LDS records so i think it's a roadblock for the time being. I can't find any marriage records for Buchanan/Jarvis. Maybe the jarvis side will fill that in at some point." per email from Dorothy Hawkinson, Aug 15 2010.6
