McDonald were adopted in 1902 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Alexander Paterson immigrated from Scotland in 1902 and became the adopted child of Matthew and Ella McDonald of the Smithfield area in Brighton township. The 1911 Census provides much of this info and the newspaper report of his loss in France in 1917 shows that he "had made his home" with this family.
