Obit: The late Mr. W. J. Eyre, whose death was announced yesterday, was very well known in business and social circles, not only in Ottawa, but throughout the Dominion. He was the eldest son of the late John Eyre, of Brighton, Ont., who represented Northumberland County in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario for some years. He was educated at Upper Canada College, and later on studied for the Bar. After his father's death he succeeded to the family place in Brighton and married, in 1885, Kathleen Collins, youngest daughter of the late Patrick Conely, Esq., of Merrickville, Ont. During their occupancy "Fairview" was noted for the generous hospitality so characteristic of the deceased gentleman.
In 1895 Mr. Eyre removed to Ottawa and established a general agency and brokerage business. With his experience, tact, wide acquaintance and genial nature, this grew to large proportions. Symptoms of heart disease had become evident about a year ago, and in June, 1907, he had a serious attack, from which he never quite recovered, though his fine constitution, determination and buoyancy gave fair hopes until quite lately that he would do so under the devoted care he received. In October last his health seemed so improved that he was able to be out and attend to business. George Eyre, Esq., of Detroit, his brother, Mr. Ross, wife of Frederick Ross, Esq, manager of the Merchants Bank, at Elora, Ont; a sister, and James Phillips, Esq., of Toronto, stepfather, are the nearest living relatives. He will be buried in the family vault in Brighton, Ont., but arrangements for the funeral have not yet been completed." The Ottawa Evening Journal, Thursday, February 6, 1908, pg 9 - ancestry.ca.6,11
He was buried on 7 February 1908 at Mount Hope Cemetery, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Memorial: (See Exhibit) Willi8am J; Eyre; Born 1858; Died 1908 (Mount Hope Cemetery, Brighton, Nov 1 2019.)6
