(From The Midale (Sask.) Enterprise) On Thursday last at about 8.30 p.m., Midale and countryside were shocked by the sad news that Robert Percival Clindinin (aged 18 yrs., 5 mos. 6 days) only son of Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Clindinin, had met a sad end in the river Souris, which passes through his father's farm. It appears that the deceased, accompanied by a friend, went to the river to learn the art of swimming at about 7.30 p.m., and entered the water at one of the deepest places. They had only been in the water a short time when it was found that it was to chilly, and decided to come ashore, but in the act of doing so the victim was seized with cramps and unfortunately was carried below. A large number of willing helpers were early on the scene and search parties were organized. Efforts were made to locate the spot where the body was, but without avail until about 4 a.m., when V. R. Deacon and party located the spot and with assistance succeeded in bringing the body to the surface. Dr. Mainprize was present when the body was found, and upon his advice, no inquest was deemed necessary. The deceased was born 1896, in Brighton, where part of his childhood was spent. Me was of a kindly disposition and popular amongst all his friends. Devoted to parents and home, and with the exception of two years spent at the college, Regina, has assisted his father upon the farm. The surviving sisters are: Mrs. J.W. Powers, Brighton, Ont. and Miss Anna, of Regina. His early demise is regretted by all, and the family have the sympathy of the residents of Midale and countryside in their severe trial. The funeral services were held in the home of the young man's parents last Sunday at 3 o'clock. A great number of friends of the stricken family had gathered from far and wide to pay their last tributes to the memory of the deceased who was so suddenly cut short - and to evince their sympathy with the bereaved family. Rev. C. A. Wicklund. of Fargo, N. D., and former pastor of the Baptist church in this town, had been summoned to officiate. Briefly he pointed out the grounds for the Christian's faith in a life after death and the hope of a happy reunion. After this the choir, under the leadership of Mr. Chas Marks, sang a very touching but comforting hymn. At the grave after the quoting of appropriate scripture passages and the commending of the soul of the departed one to God, he was quietly laid to rest amidst the chanting of the beautiful hymn "Nearer my God to thee". The numerous floral offerings, the large number of friends attending both in the home and during the services at the grave, as well as their respectful and sympathetic attitude, gave evidence of the high esteem in which the deceased, as well as those who survive him, are held." from pg. 027 of Newspaper Clippings, a collection donated by Shawnee Spencer to the Brighton Digital Archives, 2022. on 2 July 1914 at Souris River, Midale, Estevan Dist., Saskatchewan.3 He died on 2 July 1914 at Souris River, Midale, Estevan Dist., Saskatchewan, at age 18; Death Index: Name: Robert Percival Clindinin; Death Date: Jul 2 1914; Death Place: Saskatchewan (Saskatchewan Death Index,ancestry.ca.
