He said the following: The Colborne line descends from Lent Ives, who migrated from Connecticut to the Syracuse area after the Revolutionary War. His son Dr. Elam Burr Ives took a land grant near Grafton circa 1815. Elam Burr Ives was said to be the first saddleback doctor between Kingston and Toronto. Elam is buried in Salem Cemetary where most of the Ives and the early pioneers of Colborne are buried. Our line from Elam is through his son Giles Hamlin Ives and his son William Willis Henry Ives, who was George Clarence's father. There are many descendents of George and Emma - at a family reunion in Castleton in the 1970s we counted more than a hundred.

George's brothers Cyrus and Elmer apparently absconded with money and left George and his father with a great deal of debt in the late 1880s after Ray's birth. George subsequently had a nervous breakdown but in time recovered. He too worked as a builder and cabinetmaker. Jennie had many pieces of furniture that he built, including her bed. The family of George and Emma Kemp Ives grew up in a large rented farmhouse in Lakeport, Ontario. The house is gone now and since the 1950s has been the site of a large concrete shipping operation. While not wealthy, they apparently had good values and four children attended university: Ray, Earl, Jennie and Harold.
I remember all of the Ives as notable for their can-do attitude, and all were practical and clever with their hands. As a child I delighted in visits from any of my grand aunts and uncles, and in particular we saw a lot of Jennie and Ray, who were particularly close to my grandmother. They all would make at least one trip a year over to Rochester, and as I said earlier, we were up to Canada many times a year. The next generation has had many people of great accomplishment, and I have always stood somewhat in awe of my Canadian Ives relations. There are certain themes to their career choices: lots of doctors, nurses, teachers and more recently, lawyers.

The building was an attempt at Greek Revival design. James, born in Ireland in 1805, was the son of Royal Irish Yeoman Major THOS. LAWLESS, who was the nephew of SIR NICHOLAS LAWLESS (Baron Cloncurry). After becoming a school teacher in Montreal, James aquired his knowledge of business while in the employ of the "Nichols & Cantwell" mercantile house located in south western Quebec in 1829 and 1830. His first store was set up in Matilda Twp., Dundas Co., Ontario in 1831. In 1834 James, his wife HARRIET AUGUSTA SMITH (1811- 1890) and their infant son, Thomas, moved on to Grafton. In 1835 James advertised his business in the "Cobourg Star". In 1837 he paid for a shopkeepers license in Grafton. Along with his duties as clerk of the Newcastle District Court, his wagon of supplies could be seen covering the country roads for several years. In 1848 James and 2 of his young sons died suddenly leaving his widow with 4 remaining sons and a daughter. His wife struggled along with the business until about 1860. The store was then lost to the young family, however, the mercantile business was not gone from the descendants of James Lawless forever.
