He appeared on the census of May 1882 at Pendlebury Twp., Salford Borough, Lancashire, England; Age 9 months at 1881 Census: see Sarah Hazelwood (mother.) He lived on 20 May 1889 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; "A Barnardo Child, Florence Chatten; Samuel Hazelwood came to Canada with his brother, Thomas, on May 20, 1889. He was only nine years old. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McPhail of Codrington came to Marchmont House in Belleville looking for a Barnardo boy to help them on the farm, and they immediately chose Sam. From the reports recorded by a Marchmont worker who visited the family, the McPhail's and Sam "were much attached to each other". His brother, Thomas, came to visit him twice. He attended school and Sunday school regularly and was also a member of the Epworth League. Like other boys in the community he especially enjoyed Christmas with its celebrations and presents. In August 1899, the Marchmont worker who called learned that Samuel had gone to Brighton to learn the blacksmith trade. Apparently the McPhail's had agreed to help him. He settled in Orland in 1908 and set up a blacksmith shop. Sam married a local girl, Nora Cole, and raised a family of six children. They were Lillie, Irene, Robert, Lulu, Norman and Bryce. Sam and Nora bought the house and lot, the "Strong" place, north of the dam in September 1911. The farm north of the house was purchased from George Herrington in the early 1900s. Customers travelled for miles to have their horses shod at his blacksmith shop. We wonder how he found the time to farm as well. Their three sons could probably answer that question. Sam was only fifty-one years old when he died of pneumonia on January 1, 1933. The community had hosted a hard-working, well respected man. Over time, the family changed the spelling of the name to Hazlewood." from "Brighton Township" by Florence Chatten, 2009, pg. 209.8 He immigrated in 1890 to Ontario; Immigration 1890 per 1901 Census.
