Their three children were born here and during this period, Samuel and Alice both performed regularly at the "Old Opera House" on the second floor of Brighton's Town Hall. The hall was built in 1885 and demolished by a tornado on July 13th, 1973. Their daughter Ruby (1904) performed in these plays right from when she was a young girl. Maurice Cheer (1891) also performed and got the nickname "Rube" from one of the characters he portrayed. Mr. Cheer also directed many of the plays performed at this time and Alice, a gifted singer, was also pianist for other acts and performances at the Opera House. Sam Cheer was bailiff and mail courier in the '20s and '30s. Their son Ralph (1893) was nicknamed Dan from a performance. As a young man, he operated an ice cream parlour in the Proctor Block, on the easterly north side of Main Street. This is now the brick wall just west of the restored facade of the old Standard and CIBC bank, and is part of the Sobeys parking lot. This block, after many renovations over the years, was destroyed by fire in 1980. Ralph was also employed by Grant Quick at Presqu'ile Pavilion in the 1920s and again in the late 1940s. During this period he also owned a farm east of the present public school at Spring Valley on County Road 26. The family lived there until they "moved to town" in 1948. Their farm was purchased by Peter and Jessie Kulaska, newly arrived from Europe and is now owned by Peter and Jessie's one daughter, Lucille and son-in-law, Tom Coyne, who are chicken producers. Maurice Cheer, an electrician by trade, worked locally; he rewired the Cooey plant at one time and was employed at General Motors as an electrical maintenance man. He later worked at the Trenton Air Base in the same capacity until his retirement. He then did the odd wiring job for individuals for a few years. Maurice loved horse racing and had attended every Queen's Plate running for as long as his health would allow. Many a horse calendar adorned the walls of his home. Robert David "Dave" Cheer1
M, b. 12 August 1963, d. 13 February 2026
Robert David "Dave" Cheer was born on 12 August 1963 at Ontario; Date Aug 12 1963 per Obit. per "The George Chatterson Family", copied from original provided by Florence Chatten, June 4, 2005.1 He died on 13 February 2026 at Ontario at age 62; OBIT: "CHEER, Robert David "Dave"; August 12, 1963 - February 13, 2026; It is with great sadness that we must announce the passing of Robert David Cheer "Dave". He was a loving husband of 39 years to Loraine Cheer (nee Beaudry). Dave left behind two beautiful daughters, Kimberly and Jennifer (Garland) Conley. Dave was the proudest grandpy to 10-month-old Colter Conley, "Cooper". Dave will also be deeply missed by his parents Doug and Gracelyn (Cooper) Cheer, the best big brother to Roger Cheer (Andrea). Remembered by his aunt Gail Cheer and uncle Robert Belanger. Predeceased by his Grandparents Lynwood & Gladys Cooper, Thomas & Eva Cheer; his Aunt Joan Belanger (Cheer) and his In-Laws Gerry & Nellie Beaudry (of Colborne). Dave will also be missed by his brothers-in-law Ken (Amy) Beaudry, Rene (Crystal) Beaudry, and sister-in-law Janet (Tom) Simpson. He will also be missed by several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by nephew James (Beaudry). Also dearly missed by many cousins, great friends and employees. Dave was an incredibly well-loved person in the town of Brighton who was respected in many ways. His love for sports and outdoor activities was always top notch. He loved hunting, trapping, fishing on the bay, playing hockey wherever there was ice; he only needed skates, gloves, a stick, and a puck; baseball, skiing and golf. When playing sports Dave always gave 110% and never liked losing. Dave was a graduate of both Brighton Public School and ENSS. He then went on to graduate from Ridgetown College in the Agricultural Production Management Program. From there he got his first job with the Grafton Co-op, and years later was given the opportunity to manage the Picton Co-op. Thirty-one years ago Dave took a new position with United Agri Products where he became a territorial salesman. He made many great friends within this job and became a big fish in a little pond who everyone called upon when they needed any help. David and his lifelong partner Loraine, along with their two daughters, started a legacy in Brighton called Cheer Farms. They created a safe place where friends and family could gather and be taught about hard work and where/how food was grown. David loved being on the farm, growing apples, strawberries, corn, pumpkins, squash, and so much more. Going to the Food Terminal in Toronto from such a young age made opening a roadside market easy for Dave. It meant that he reconnected with many farmers that he met along the way working at Rundalls as a teenager. Dave always looked forward to the market opening and his first trip to the Ontario Food Terminal."
