The water cascaded down the narrrow valley, following the creek to the north-east, all the way to Cole Creek and eventually the Trent River. Lewis Shearer's saw mill in the valley north of Hilton was destroyed, killing Mr. Shearer and a helper, Jacob Herrington. This event is known in local parlance as "The Breakaway". The Stephens brothers, Alva and Daniel, had recently obtained parts of the south half of lot 5 from their father Richard, so, all of a sudden, their lake was gone. They sold to John Philp soon after. Note: While researching the Breakaway story in the fall of 2021 I had reviewed the info re William Simpson and Harriet Benedict and seen that the census records suggest that there were several daughters in that family which we do not have documented. Then, while researching the John Alley family, which in 1852 lived on Conc 5, Lot 24 (Friends Metting Hosue and Cemetery), I saw the 1860 US Federal Census record showing William Simpson, age 88, living with them at Grand Rapids, Michigan. The family tree of Carole Alden on ancestry.ca showed the wife of John Alley, Nancy, to be Nancy Simpson. It follows that Nancy is one more of the undocumented daughters of William Simpson.
