Gaffield "Charity Bennett's Own Centennial Draws Near; MANCHESTER - There's a saying around Manchester that "absolutely nobody can make a pie like Charity Bennett" It's fortunate that cake is the delicacy served on birthdays because, when Charity Bennett's 100th milestone rolls around on May 7, nobody would want to give her second-best pie.
Mrs. Bennett for many years operated the "Railroad Restaurant" in Manchester. Diners craved her pies and her roast beef meals. Dinner was served family style and helpings were plentiful. "Why, a meal isn't a meal unless you have roast beef," Mrs. Bennett used to say. Railroaders working out of the Manchester yards when this was a booming railroad town were her best customers. Her family recalls that Mrs Bennett opened the restaurant about 1922. The next year, her husband, Harry Bennett, left the railroad after 30 years as a general foreman and joined her in the business. They operated the restaurant until 1944 when they retired and moved to the Adirondacks area. Mr. Bennett died in 1956.
Mrs Bennett now is confined to the extended care wing of Lake Placid Memorial Hospital. She's rather frail and has suffered serious illnesses in the past two years. Her family, including four daughters and ,a son, will join her for a party on her birthday.
Mrs. Bennett was born May 7, 1876, in Castleton, Ontario, Canada. She moved to the United States at the age of 20 and, in 1899, she was married to Bennett. They settled in Manchester. The Bennetts had a camp in the mountains and decided to spend their retirement days there. Mrs. Bennett was 90 when she voluntarily surrendered her driver's license to the Motor Vehicle Bureau. The bureau director said she didn't have to relinquish the privilege but, she quipped: "No, I'd rather give up driving now. I'm afraid I might hurt someone." She had an accident-free record and owned her own old-model car. She always was interested in the community, but wasn't a joiner, a daughter said. Mrs. Bennett insisted, however, on being involved in all family get-togethers.
