Note: On first glance, the year appears to be 1859. On closer examination, an extraneous black dot can be seen near the top of the 9 which makes the 3 look like a 5. In context, it is much more likely to be 1839 since that is when this family came here and lived in this place. There are no other transactions until 1880. The water cascaded down the narrrow valley, following the creek to the north-east, all the way to Cole Creek and eventually the Trent River. Lewis Shearer's saw mill in the valley north of Hilton was destroyed, killing Mr. Shearer and a helper, Jacob Herrington. This event is known in local parlance as "The Breakaway". The Stephens brothers, Alva and Daniel, had recently obtained parts of the south half of lot 5 from their father Richard, so, all of a sudden, their lake was gone. They sold to John Philp soon after. Next east on the creek was Edmund Thorne who had brought his family to Conc 5, Lot 2 only a couple of years before.
