"The Late E. O. Gould - On Wednesday evening, Sept. 15th, 1909, there passed from our midst a man whose christian character, daily conduct and singular faithfulness to every duty that fell to his lot, cliam a place in the memory of all who came within the sphere of his influence. Evander Orrin Gould was born in Colborne, July 9, 1864. While yet a mere boy, he, with two of his brothers, removed from the place of his birth to the locality of Bancroft to carve out for himself a home. On Christmas day in the year 1891 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Goodkey, who survives him. The first great sorrow came into their happy home a few years ago, when their eldest boy was snatched from them by scarlet fever. Three children, two girls and a boy, are left to the care of the sorrowing mother. Mr. Gould and family moved to Port Hope some thirteen years ago when he entered the employ of his uncle, Mr. N. B. Gould of this town. After a time he engaged with Mr. Stephens, of the City Grocery, where he completed his day's work. Ten weeks ago he developed typhoid fever, his feeble body but brave spirit resisted the attack nobly, but there was not sufficient strength left to rally from the attack, and as already stated, on Wednesday evening he "slept away". Such, in brief, is the outline of his life. But there remains much that might be said, and much more that cannot find experssion in human language that was woven in the fabric of the life of this man of God. He was converted while very young (often in the prayer meeting did he thank God for this) he united with the Baptist Church and from the date of his conversion he entered into the service of his Master. Some time ago he was elected to the office of deacon of the Baptist Church, an office which he magnified by his consistent life. He was always very much interested in the work among young people and will be greatly missed in the Sunday School where he had taught for a number of years., and latterly held the office of Secretary-Treasurer. He was taken in the midst of his days, as man regards it, but it is intensity of life, not length that counts in the estimate of our Master. He was never blest with a robust body, but he worked up to the limit of his strength, and sometimes beyond that limit. His remains were carried to their resting place today by members of the board of deacons. He will be missed in the community, he will be missed in his church and Sunday School." from The Port Hope Evening Guide, Thursday, September 16, 1909, seen on microfilm at The Ontario Archives, Nov. 23, 2001.8 He was buried on 17 September 1909 at Union Cemetery, Port Hope, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Memorial: (See Exhibit) GOULD; Father; Orrin E; 1864 - 1909; Son; Herman J; 1892 - 1903 (Port Hope Union Cemetery, July 23, 2006)
