Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte, pg. 586.1 He "By the time the American Revolution broke out, Matthias Marsh UE was residing with his parents in Manchester a town in the future Vermont. His parents were William Marsh 1738-1816 and Sarah French 1741-1820. William began the War as an officer in the Green Mountain Boys hence the designation "Colonel" which stuck with him. IGI Record. He was buried on 19 June 1829 at White's Cemetery, Sidney Twp., Hastings Co., Upper Canada; FindaGrave: Name: Mathias Marsh; BIRTH: 1763, Vermont, USA; DEATH: 1829 (aged 65–66), Ontario, Canada; BURIAL: Whites Cemetery, Bayside, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada; MEMORIAL ID: 172805996; Note: By the time the American Revolution broke out, Matthias Marsh UE was residing with his parents in Manchester, a town in the future Vermont. His parents were William Marsh 1738-1816 and Sarah French 1741-1820. William began the War as an officer in the Green Mountain Boys hence the designation "Colonel" which stuck with him. In 1777 William switched to the British and for the duration of the War and indeed afterwards he worked in the Secret Service and was back and forth between Vermont and Quebec a number of times. Matthias was born in 1763 so still quite young when the War began. He never joined a Loyalist Corps, and he remained in the Manchester area during the War. Why then was he retained on The Executive Council List and not expunged as so many sons of Loyalists were? The picture that is emerging is that he was involved on site with the Secret Service work for his father and would have been well placed to know many of the key players such as the Allens. Matthias married Sarah Richardson in Manchester in 1783. Sarah was the daughter of Nathan Richardson a Rebel originally from Connecticut. Before 1790 Matthias and Sarah were in the Bay of Quinte area, and Sarah is supposed to have drowned in the Trent River in 1810. While not a lot is known about her, Matthias's second wife was reportedly a Mrs. Dickson. Matthias resided in Sidney Township, Hastings County. In 1801 he proposed the first bridge over the Trent River, but it was left to the next generation to complete the project. Matthias was dead by 1829 and he is likely buried in Whites Cemetery just east of Trenton. Matthias's most famous descendant is the Rt. Hon. Lester B. Pearson. Research in Ontario suggests that this is, in fact, the Johnson Marsh who was a son of Col. William Marsh and Sarah French. Sarah, Mary Ann and Almond Marsh are children of Johnson Marsh per GEDCOM of Kevin Handy, Mar 18, 2007. circa 1815 at Vermont, U.S.A..1,4 He appeared on the census of 1820 at Dorset, Bennington Co., Vermont, U.S.A; 1820 Census: Johnson Marsh; 1 male under 10; 1 male over 45; 1 female over 45
Note: The two names just below Johnson Marsh are Alescon Curtis and John Sprague.8 He "The families in the 1820 census are in East Dorset on what is now Rt. 7A. (East Dorset is just part of Dorset, not a separate town.) It was quite good land, particularly to the west. The eastern mountains are Green Mountains, steep, with acidic soils, while Morse Hill and Dorset Mtn to the west are part of the Taconic range, and are less steep, and limey. The center of Dorset is what was called Dorset Mtn, now Mt. Aeolus, and its core is marble. The house William Marsh owned is still there, and I think Johnson was probably living in it in 1820. The Deming house, also mentioned in the census, is also still there. On the 1810 census, Col. Marsh himself is there and just north are his daughter Charlotte and husband, Jesse Southwick and 7 of their kids. (It is even possible it is the back of Marsh's house, which was older and had a separate entrance.)" per email from Wilson Brown, June 21 2010 in 1820 at East Dorset, Bennington Co., Vermont, U.S.A..1 He married Olive Sprague, daughter of John Sprague and ? ?, before 1822 at Dorset, Bennington Co., Vermont, U.S.A; Does not appear to be married in 1820 Census - 1 female OVER 45 is with him. per marriage register of son John Sprague Mash.8 John Johnson Marsh appeared on the census of 1830 at West Dorset, Bennington Co., Vermont, U.S.A; 1830 Census: Johnson Marsh; 2 males 5 to 10; 1 male 10 to 15; 1 male 40 to 50; 2 females 0 to 5; 1 female 30 to 40.8 He lived on 11 March 1839 at Hope Twp., Durham Co., Ontario; "Know all men by these presents that I, Elizabeth Sexton of the Township of Hope in the Newcastle District and Province of Upper Canada, widow of Jonathan Sextonm deceased, am held and firmly bound unto Johnson Marsh of the Township of Hope aforesaid in the District and Province aforesaid, Gentleman, in the sum of One Thousand Pounds of lawful money of the said Province, to be paid to the said Johnson Marsh, his certain Attorney, his heirs, executors, administrators or assignes, for which payment well and truly to be made, I bind myself, my heirs, executors and administrators firmly by these presents, sealed with my seal dated this eleventh day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty nine. .. Note: This Petition shows that Johnson Marsh lived for a few years at Port Hope before moving to St. Vincent Twp., Grey Co. He had acquired the Assignments for the Crown Land Grants that were due his sister Elizabeth (Marsh) Sexton and his sister-in-law Jane (Ostram) Marsh and was asking for an extension of the time stipulated for completing Settlement Duties. Jonathan Sexton had died much earlier and Elizabeth would die in 1841. Samuel Marsh, husband of Jane Ostram, had died in 1820.9 He lived in 1843 at Conc 12 Lot 6, St. Vincent Twp., Grey Co., Ontario; "BIOGRAPHY: "Asa had become unhappy with conditions in Carrying Place and Brighton, and had been looking for opportunities that might come along. Grey County had been open to prospective settlers for about twenty years. There was still crown land available and the prospects for successful venture looked good.
Asa applied for and received a land grant in St. Vincent Township. The grant had been obtained through his efforts at Toronto. The crown had granted him the east half of lots 7 and 8 in the XIIth Concessions. We think Asa had visited the land in 1858. He probably travelled by rail to Collingwood, and by steamship to Meaford. For the rest of the trip he may have rented a horse and wagon in Meaford and driven to his property. The 15, 16 sideroad, and the Xith line road and possibly part of 9, 10 sideroad would have been passable at that time."

He appeared on the census of 1851 at St. Vincent Twp., Grey Co., Ontario; Age 70 at 1851 Census: see John Marsh (son.)2 He lived on 6 March 1851 at Conc 12 Lot 5, St. Vincent Twp., Grey Co., Ontario; Land Registry Records (Patent) show that Johnson Marsh received the Patent from the Crown for all 200 acres of Conc 12, Lot 5, St. Vincent Twp., Grey Co., Inst. Marsh - Autobiograhy", a copy found in Jean Anderson's papers)
Note: C. W. Marsh was Charles Welsey Marsh (1837-1918), son of Samuel Marsh and Tamar Richardson; born at Sidney, moved to DeKalb Co., Illinois as a child in 1849. circa 1870 at Port Sarnia, Ontario. He appeared on the census of April 1871 at Collingwood, Grey North Co., Ontario; Age 95 at 1871 Census: Marsh, Johnson, 95, b. USA, Eng., Gentleman - 1871 Census Index Online, Div. 76, C-9953.5 He "His youngest son Johnson, went back to Vermont and lived there many years, and then returned to Canada, settling at Port Sarnia where he died about thirty years ago, having nearly reached 100 years of age. Marsh - Autobiography", part of Jean Anderson's Papers in my possession.
Note: This info suggests C. W. Marsh was writing this in 1902. The Death Registration of Johnson Marsh shows that he was age 92 in 1872. Also, the location of Port Sarnia seems wrong. The Death Registration is simply St. Vincent Twp. where he lived - that's a long way away from Sarnia. circa 1872 at Ontario.
