Location Vermont per 1880 US Fed Census (Michigan) for daughter Sarah Ann (Young) McKenzie.2,3,4,5,6 He "Young Family Bible: Says that Stephen Young was the son of Colonel Young of the British Army who was granted 7,000 acres in Upper Canada. This is highly unlikely. Stephen Young was very likely born in Vermont, certainly married in Vermont and came up to Canada after 1802, settling on lands that appear to be lands secured by William Marsh, his grandfather, or else by Matthias Marsh.
Ancestral File AFN:11J8-IRR says Stephen was the son of John Young, but I do not have any evidence beyond that statement. So far I have found no convincing evidence of who Stephen's father.
Stephen Young is not a member of the family of Guy Henry Young from Long Island, who was an officer and who settled in Prince Edward County, farther east on the peninsula. He is not a descendant of Robert Young, a British Navy captain, who settled near the Marshes. It is unlikely he is the son of John, since he didn't name a child John. Nor was Stephen the son of a Palatine Jung/Young family that settled on the Niagara Peninsula. Stephen Young should also not be confused with a Stephen Young and his brother, Peter, who settled at Fredericksburgh, across the tip of the peninsula from Prince Edward County. They are older and poorer. They did move to Picton, but they are not the same family." per "Descendants of Stephen Young" sent to me by Wilson Brown, March 28, 2007. circa 1778.4 He "Stephen Young with his half-brother, Asa Weller, came to the Carrying Place about 1802: they being the first settlers at Weller's Bay. He was born at Manchester, Vermont, in 1778, and died in 1849. He married Lucy Marsh, daughter of the old Sydney pioneer, Matthias Marsh. She was born at Manchester, Vermont, in 1785, and died in 1847. Both are bu1Tied in the Can·ying Place
Cemetery." Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte, pg. 41.
Note: Half-brother of Asa Weller??? Have seen nothing to explain this - yet. Also, we know Asa Weller came to the CArring Place as early as 1789, then came for good in 1792. Stephen Young was in Pownal, Bennington Co., Vermont per the 1800 US Federal Census, so they did not come at the same time. (Dan Buchanan, Oct 9 2024) in 1778 at Manchester, Vermont, U.S.A.. He married Lucy Marsh, daughter of Mathias Marsh and Sarah Richardson, circa 1798 at Bennington Co., Vermont, U.S.A; " ... emigrated from U.S. with her husband c. 50 years ago, died in Murray Twp. ... " per "Descendants of Stephen Young" sent to me by Wilson Brown, March 28, 2007.

Note: This matches the family of Stephen Young and Lucy Marsh in 1800 before they moved to Upper Canada - per "Descendants of Stephen Young" sent to me by Wilson Brown, March 28, 2007.5,4 He lived in 1802 at Murray Twp., Carrying Place, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "Stephen Young, half-brother to Asa Weller, has arrived to join his family at the Carrying Place, and is immediately invited to join his brother in the profitable business of the Overland Railway Portage." from page 378 of "Hans Waltimeyer" by Jane Bennett Goddard, UE, 1980.
Note: Have not been able to determine how Stephen Young and Asa Weller might be "half-brothers". Any ideas? (Dan Buchanan, Oct 6 2024.)8 He immigrated after 1802 to Upper Canada; " ... came to Canada after 1802 ... September 26, 2013, Email from Wilson Brown - (fag contributor) -Wilson@professorsbrown.com; Stephen Young's father remains a mystery. He is not, however, Guy Henry Young. Stephen was born in Arlington, VT, in 1777 and married Lucy Marsh in Manchester, Vt about 1788 or 1799. The couple had at least one child there before moving to the Bay of Quinte in 1802. I can only guess that Lucy went to Vermont to visit, and perhaps help care for, her grandparents, Col. William and Sarah, and there met Stephen. Most researchers, including me at first, kept looking at Loyalist Youngs of which there are at least 3 families in the area. There was a Young family in Arlington, Vt, from Cornwall, CT. Age, location, and naming patterns suggest that Stephen is from that family and also connected with the Hawley family, but these are only hints. Several family members tell me that Stephen Young was on a trip to Montreal and that he died there. I haven't confirmed that. Stephen was not himself a Loyalist. His first farm was on the land of Jeremiah Marsh, Lucy's uncle, and only much later did Lucy herself, as the daughter of Matthias, a Loyalist, getting her 200 acres. I just had a thought that Stephen's not getting a grant of land is an indication that his father was not a Loyalist. Interestingly, only one of Col. William's ten children married a Loyalist - Samuel William who married Jannetje (Jane) Ostrum. I am certain, however Stephen is not from Henry Young's family. William Samuel Marsh was born in 1774 at Manchester, Bennington Co., Vermont, U.S.A; Date 1774 & location Manchester per GEDCOM of Bill French, Nov 25, 2004. IGI Record.1,2 He was baptized on 4 November 1779 at Manchester, Vermont, U.S.A; "1779: Baptizm: by Rev. Gideon Bostwick (Anglican) Nov 4, 1779 in Manchester." per "Record of William S. Marsh" sent to me by Wilson Brown, Jan 21, 2008.3 He lived circa 1788 at Sidney Twp., Mecklenburg Dist., Province of Quebec; "1787 - 1789 - Possibly with father and some of the family at Sidney, Bay of Quinte" per "Record of William S. Note: Older brother Mathias was already established in the Front of Sidney and raised a large family there.3 He appeared on the census of 1791 at Dorset, Manchester Co., Vermont, U.S.A; "1791: Census: William Marsh of Dorset, Vermont has living with him, among others, two males under 16 or under, which would be Johnson and William S. Jeremiah told the officials at the border when he entered Canada that he was going to join his parents. There are several mentions of (Col) William Marsh in Sidney in 1793. William and Sarah appear to have left in the winter of 1793-94, perhaps shortly after Samuel William was married in February of 1794. Arriving in Canada in September of 1794, Benjamin Marsh stated that he had been in Vermont for 6 months and that he was going to look around before settling down. He made no mention of his parents in Canada, so he probably went back with the family and returned. I would guess that William S. went to Vermont with his parents in 1794." per "Record of William S. Marsh" sent to me by Wilson Brown, Jan 21, 2008.3 He lived on 14 July 1796 at Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "Petitions read on the 14th of July, 1796. .... No. 146. We cannot tell how long William S. had been in Canada before he made this purchase, but it looks like he took a trip there with this purchase in mind. Note: These sections on the back of this document show that the Council did not approve the extension to the time for completing settlement duties which was requested by Johnson Marsh in a Petition dated Feb 7 1841. The reasoning seems to be that "settlement duties" was not the issue, a mentioned in Johnson Marsh's Petition, but "actuall settlement" was the point the Council wanted to impose. The Government of the time was very anxious to have land occupied by people- actually living on the land. It might be expected that Johnson Marsh and his son John Sprague Marsh moved to St. Vincent fairly soon in order to maintain their claim to the land.3
