There is no death registration or note in the 1871 Census about it, but John Wright Proctor, last owner of Proctor House, says that it was "1870 approximately" when the events occurred that resulted in the infamous Proctor House Ghost. When John Nix, Jr. died the family was indebeted to John Edward Proctor, probably due to the mortgages re the wharf at Gosport some years before. The story goes that Proctor would not release John Nix's body to his family until the debt was paid and as a result, John Nix haunts Proctor House. The Proctor family certanly believed they had seen bright lights above the house many times, which were taken to be the ghost of John Nix. These lights were later thought to be due to gas from the creek and low areas north of the house, but the legend of the Proctor House ghost persists. (Dan Buchanan, Oct 7 2017.)1
