I don't know if it was in the genealogy I sent along a couple of years ago. Anyway: Ron Mesnard writes: The first job JS had in CA was moving supplies for a lumber co. They supplied wood for a ship builder in Port Hope. After a few years of that he went home. At 19 he moved to Meaford. He must have gotten his dad to work on a land grant while was in VT; WBB here. I see connections here I did not see before. The ship builder is William Samuel Marsh, son of Samuel William Marsh of Port Hope. Don't confuse this William Samuel with his uncle William Samuel. WS Marsh became very wealthy. He was also John Sprague Marsh's first cousin, although much older. Moreover, John Sprague Marsh worked with Daniel Brands (or Brand), whose wife was Elizabeth Sexton, another first cousin of JSM, and the person honored in JSM's naming of his oldest son, Daniel Brand Marsh (1858-1933), a well-known preacher scientist, and inventor. And also thank you for finding that the grant Johnson got was also to is two widowed sisters." per email from Wilson Brown, June 21 2010. He lived in 1843 at Conc 12 Lot 6, St. Vincent Twp., Grey Co., Ontario; "BIOGRAPHY: "Asa had become unhappy with conditions in Carrying Place and Brighton, and had been looking for opportunities that might come along. Grey County had been open to prospective settlers for about twenty years. There was still crown land available and the prospects for successful venture looked good.
Asa applied for and received a land grant in St. Vincent Township. The grant had been obtained through his efforts at Toronto. The crown had granted him the east half of lots 7 and 8 in the XIIth Concessions. We think Asa had visited the land in 1858. He probably travelled by rail to Collingwood, and by steamship to Meaford. For the rest of the trip he may have rented a horse and wagon in Meaford and driven to his property. The 15, 16 sideroad, and the Xith line road and possibly part of 9, 10 sideroad would have been passable at that time."
BIOGRAPHY: Exerpt from the "Weller Family History," Volume 2 by Burton Weller Eagles." and .... "His aunt, (Hannah's sister), Elizabeth (Marsh) Sexton, was granted Lot 5, Conc 12 and Hannah's brother, Johnson Marsh was granted Lot 6, Conc 12, in 1843
In 1862 Johnson's son owned Lot 6, conc 12 and the NW corner of Lot 5, and Johnson owned the east part of Lot 5 and the west part of Lots 7,8. John Marsh went there in 1843 (see account of trip at John Marsh)" per GEDCOM of Kevin Handy, Mar 18 2007.1 He married Mary Douglas, daughter of John Douglas and Janet ?, before 1844 at Ontario; per 1851 Census. per GEDCOM of Kevin Handy, Mar 18 2007.1,3 John Sprague Marsh lived on 6 March 1849 at Conc 12 Lot 6, St. Vincent Twp., Grey Co., Ontario; Land Registry Records (Patent) show that John Marsh obtained the Crown Patent for all 200 acres of Conc 12, Lot 6, St. Vincent Twp., Grey Co., Inst. Date Mar 6 1849.
Note: The name here definitely looks like John and not Johnson. Since John S. Marsh sold part of it in 1857, it's is reasonable believe this Patent went to Johnson Marsh's son.8 He appeared on the census of 1851 at St. Vincent Twp., Grey Co., Ontario; Age ? at 1851 Census: Marsh, John, ?, b. Pres., single (1851 Census: St. Vincent Twp., pg. 37 of 75 - ancestry.com)
Note: Nancy Marsh is likely a relative who is there to help with the young children. She was born in Ontario so is not a siser of John Marsh - likely from one of the other related Marsh families.
Note: John (25) and Mary (26) Douglas are just below John Marsh in the 1851 Census.
