"David Turney the father of John was born in the year 1775 in the State of New York. It is likely that the family were Loyalists." from page 40 of "The Goulds and Other Related Families" by Doug McDermid, copy found at Trenton Public Library)

Note: I have seen no documents to suggest that David Jr. was born in Connecticut. The year 1776 is at the beginning of the war. What was happening with David and Sarah at this time? Where were they? Let's remember that they had been married in 1766, so a decade before this. Where there other children in there???? (Dan Buchanan, July 23 2021.)1,2,3,4,5,6 He lived in 1793 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "This David TURNEY came to Cramahe Twp, Northumberland County, Ontario as part of a group of forty families who came to settle the area in 1793 with Joseph Keeler. The county was at that time known as Newcastle District. The list of the forty families evidenced in some books covering early history of the area states "... and some Turney's". They departed from Rutland, Vermont but many of those first families had their roots traced to Connecticut and Massachusetts." per GEDCOM of Mary Chung, Apr 1 2005. He appeared on the census of September 1797 at Conc 1 Lot 22, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "David appears on the "List Of Settlers of Sept. 1797" as David TURNER on Concession 1, Lot 23. His surname was spelled incorrectly. From microfilm evidence dated 1808, it appears he'd spend the following 11 years trying to get that error corrected." per GEDCOM of Mary Chung, Apr 1 2005.
Note: Both David Turney Sr. and Jr. appear in the list.1 He married Hannah ? circa 1798 at Upper Canada; per GEDCOM of Mary Chung, July 25 2004.1 David Turney Jr. appeared on the census of 1803 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1803 Census: David Turney, Jr; 1 male 16 - 60; 1 female 16 - 60; 2 males under 16 (Newcastle District Census, Cramahe Twp.)7 He lived in 1803 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "By the year 1803 it is thought that David and Hannah Turney were living on the farm in Cramahe Township not far from the present day hamlet of Morganston, which farm is still owned by descendants of the family. John Turney, the husband of Eunice Gould was a cooper by profession and there is evidence that the family lived farther south in Brighton Township near the village of Smithfield. John and Eunice are buried in the cemetery at Smith field, which is located a short distance north of Highway # 2. The cemetery, now unused, has been turned into a small park and the tombstones including the Turney stone have been moved and imbedded into a brick wall. The family of Eunice and John Turney included the following: Eliza, Hiram, Esther, Ruth, David, James G., Sarah, Hannah Jane, and John G. Eunice Gould died in the year 1857, while her husband, John Turney, survived her by many years dying in the year 1878." from page 40 of "The Goulds" by Doug MacDermid.6 He appeared on the census of 1804 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1804 Census: David Turney, Jr; 1 male 16 - 60; 1 female 16 - 60; 2 males under 16 (Newcastle District Census, Cramahe Twp.)7 He appeared on the census of 1805 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1805 Census: David Turney, Jr; 2 male 16 - 60; 1 female 16 - 60; 2 males under 16 (Newcastle District Census, Cramahe Twp.)7 He lived on 19 March 1805 at Conc 1 Lot 22, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Land Registry Records (Patent) show that David Turney, Jr. obtained the Patent from the Crown for all 200 acres of lot 22, conc 1, Cramahe Twp. As well in 1825 he has 2 females over age 16. One would be his wife and I think the other is likely his widowed mother because his father David Sr. last appeared on the 1823 census. I think Stephen is likely the father of John Turney b: 1822 that marries Ruth Purdy.
I believe both he and his elder brother David named sons John after their elder brother John who likely came to Canada briefly in 1793 and then returned to the States. (see notes of David Turney Sr regarding a John Turner and the misspelling of the Turney surname at the time) Stephen is likely the father of a James Turney that first appears on census in 1835 as his household is the one that has a decrease of 1 male that year. Stephen was on Lot 23 Concession 1 in census year 1826 and still there in census of 1848. This property was previously his fathers (see notes of David Turney (Sr)) From census records, Stephen appears to have had at least 7 children - 5 males and 2 females." per GEDCOM of Mary Chung, July 25, 2004. circa 1850 at Conc 1 Lot 23, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario.1 He appeared on the census of 1850 at Conc 1 Lot 23, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1850 Census: Stephen Turney; Conc 1, Lot 23, prop; Total Persons: 6 (Newcastle District Census, Cramahe Twp.)6 He lived on 20 July 1865 at Conc 1 Lot 23, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; Land Registry Records (Grant D297) show that Stephen Turney sold part of lot 23, conc 1, Cramahe Twp. to Daniel Turney.      ? ? was born circa 1796; per GEDCOM og Mary Chung, July 25, 2004.1 She married Aaron Turney, son of David Turney Sr. and Sarah Gold, circa 1817 at Upper Canada; My database contained an Arron Turney married to Ellen Gould, a daughter of Gould. I see no sources for this; maybe it came from info given to me by Troy Brown who had done much Brown/Gould research. I'm guessing that this is the same guy as Mary Chung's Aaron Turney, son of David Turney. The locations and dates work OK.???? per GEDCOM of Mary Chung, July 25, 2004.1 As of circa 1819,her married name was Turney.1
