Note: William Hawley Sanford would have been 19 in 1833 so likely his father, Thomas Dorman Sanford, was still in charge but the son was the manager of the hotel. on 22 November 1833 at Brighton Hotel, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada.3 He lived on 23 November 1835 at Conc 2 Lot 1, Cramahe Twp., Brighton, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Land Registry Records (B&S 4147) show that Thomas D. The guest’s view of Main Street was unobstructed except for Granny Smith’s Shop." The Tobey Book, page 191 in 1848 at Main Street, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Canada West.5 He "Sandford House of Brighton Hotel and General Stage Office - 1848 - March 1881 - see fire. In the early days the old Smithfield road passed along the south side of the Sandford House and joined the Main Street father west. There was no right-angle corner like today. The Sanford Hotel on Young." from page 2 of The History of Brighton Businesses 1816 to 2009 by Susan Brose, 2009.6 He "In 1851 we first note the Brighton Hotel and are told that "travellers will there find a good house and reasonable charges" and that " horses and carriages will be furnished when requested". This hotel was known as Sanford's Hotel although Brighton Hotel was its official name.
In the early part of 1853 Mr. L Lewis became the proprietor of this hotel. To him the Brighton Hotel was primarily a stage house although he did not fail to advertise that he had a bar. In November of that year Mr. Sanford resumed the proprietorship. Evidently this met with Alex Begg's approval for he said: "there are good fires in every room", "the worthy host himself is all attention", "the Brighton Hotel will compare favourably with any hotel" and that "Mr. Sanford has erected a splendid sign board so that passengers may not be at a loss to know where to call"." page 211 of The Tobey Book. in 1851 at Corner of Main & Young, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Canada West.5 He lived on 6 February 1852 at Village Lot 14, Young St. West, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; Land Registry Records (B&S A14) show that Adam H. This information is given in the Sentinel of March 25 of that year. In 1853 W.H. Sanford resumed charge. The Brighton Hotel's management appears to have met with Alexander Begg's approval for he says the following in an editorial dated December 9i 1853:
"Sanford's Hotel: We invite the attention of the travelling public to Mr. Sanford's advertisement. He has resumed charge of Brighton Hotel, and has fitted it up in fine style. Travellers will find his Hotel as comfortable as any in the Line. Although his Hotel is daily crowded, we have always observed that the best order is preserved, which speaks much in favour of the proprietor." page 266 of The Tobey Book. in 1853 at Brighton Hotel, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario.5 He In July 1859, soon after Dr. King was hanged for poisoning his wife, a friend of his, Reuben Decourcey, published "Dr. King's Life, Trial, Confession and Execution". On the front page of this document, just below the portraits of Dr. & Sarah King, we see the words "Daguerrotype by Hawley Sanford, Brighton". Assuming this referes to the production of the portraits using the daguerrotype method that was common at that time. (Note: It may be more likely that it was the younger William Hawley Sanford who produced the daguerrotypes of the King's for Reuben Decourcey in July 1859. He is shown as a dentist in the 1861 Census in Simcoe Co. but was still in Brighton in 1859.) in July 1859 at Brighton, Northumberland Co., Canada West.
