(Land Registry Records, Cramahe Twp., Conc 2, Lot 1, Northumberland County Archives, Cobourg Public Library.)4 He lived in 1817 at Land where Brighton would be, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "The Tobey Book, pg. 47, shows "We have now recorded eight families whose land was offically registered. They are" Obediah Simpson, 1796; Jeremiah Scripture 1808; James Richardson, 1809; Henry Nix, 1811; Josiah Proctor, 1814; John Singleton, 1815; T. D. Sandford, 1817; and James Lyons, 1817. Undoubtedly there were a few who were squatters living on land marked by themselves and not by a surveyor. Therefore these people are not mentioned in the Ontario Registry."
Note: An example of "squatters" would be Alexander Chisholm who built mills on the creek where Spring Valley is now. He came in expecting to get the Crown Reserve granted to him but his wife Nancy and step-son John Singleton did not own the land until the 1820's.5 He lived on 10 June 1817 at Conc 2 Lot 1, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Land Registry Records (B&S 541) show that Edward Goodyear sold 100 acres in the west half of lot 1, conc 2, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co. to Thomas D. Sanford. ITS Date: Jun 10 1817. Reg'n. Date: Jun 12 1817. Sanford; 1 male over 16; 1 females over 16; 3 male under 16; 4 females under 16 (Newcastle District Census & Assessment Records, Cramahe Twp.)3 He "Sandford House of Brighton Hotel and General Stage Office - 1848 - March 1881 - see fire. In the early days the old Smithfield Road passed along the south side of the Sandford House and joined the Main Street father west. There was no right-angle corner like today. Some owner/operators Wm. H. Sandford, L. Lewis in 1853 - 1858- 1872 Papineau's - Hotel - Regis Papineau's, Snider, and the last two also referred to as Main Street." History of Brighton Business, Susan Brose, pg. 137.
Note: Not sure exactly when Main Street was straightened and the suqare three-way corner created, but it was fairly early, maybe as part of the building of the York Road. However, the words suggest that the road was not changed until after the Sanford Hotel was well established and Stage Lines ran here, which would mean more into the 1830s or so. Still looking for evidence of when this change happened. (Dan Buchanan, Mar 7 2025) circa 1825 at Main St. Intersection, Conc 2 Lot 1, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada.6 He appeared on the census of 1825 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1825 Census: Thomas D. Sanford; 3 males under 16; 4 females under 16; 2 males over 16; 1 female over 16 (Newcastle District Census & Assessment Records, Cramahe Twp.)3 He lived on 9 June 1825 at Conc 2 Lot 1, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Land Records (BS 1539) show that John Singleton & wife sold 35 acres of the S. E. part of Lot 1, Conc 2, to Thomas D. Sanford. ITS Date: Jun 9 1825. Reg. Date: Jun 22 1827. (Land Registry Records, Northumberland Co., Brighton Twp., Conc 2, Lot 1, pg 005 of 317, copied from OnLand, Apr 20 2020.)4 He A meeting was held at Union Hall, in the Kellogg Inn, at the south-west corner of Main and Prince Edward Streets, on April 2, 1831, to select a name for the new unified village underway at this place. They picked "Brighton" for the village name, after Brighton, England. (Dan Buchanan, Nov 3 2023) on 2 April 1831 at Brighton, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada. He A map of Brighton downtown on page 130 of The Tobey Book shows "1834 Sanford's Hotel" on the north side of Main Street, to the east of Kingsley Street. Also, it shows "26 1836 W. H. Sanford, Sanford's Hotel or Brighton Hotel" on the west side of Young Street, toward the north side of the block at Sanford Street. This means that Thomas Dorman Sanford (1787-1846) had a hotel on the north side of Main Street in 1834 and then the hotel moved in 1836 to the east a bit, and was operated by his son, William Hawley Sanford. This hotel would operate for several decades and be known as the Brighton Hotel.
Note: Susan Brose mentions in History of Brighton Business that Main Street immediately to the west of Young and Prince Edward Streets was originally not straight as we see today. In fact, Dundas Street, coming from Smithfield, went straight through to Main Street a little west of Young, slightly cutting off that corner. However, I have not seen a map that shows that. All of the maps in the Tobey book show a straight corner. I speculate that the original Danforth Highway went right up Dundas Street and swerved a bit north before Prince Edward Street but that this corner was made square sometime in the 1830s (no info re when this happened) when the corner was seen as important as the location of a store. Certainly, in 1841 when John Edward Proctor and Abijah Squier had a store there, I expect it was a square corner, more or less. in 1834 at Sanford Hotel, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada.5,6 He married Julia Ann "Casie" Carey circa 1835 at Brighton, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; His first wife, Anne Hawley died in 1831. Second marriage for Thomas Dorman Sanford per Ginny's email, May 21, 2002. IGI Record. Thomas Dorman Sanford lived on 28 April 1835 at Conc 2 Lot 4, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Land Registry Records (B&S 3961) show that Obadiah Simpson sold 1 acre in the north east part of lot 4, conc 2, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co. to Thomas D. Sanford. ITS Date: Apr 28 1835. Reg'n. Date: Aug 7 1835. Sanford sold one half acre, part of Village Lot 24, Brighton Village, Northumberland Co. to Samuel Cooley. ITS Date: May 25 1839. Reg'n. Date: Apr 28 1842. (Ontario Land Registry Records, Northumberland Co., Brighton Twp., Conc 2, pg. 005 of 317, page copied from OnLand.ca by Dan Buchanan, Apr 11 2020.)4 He lived on 23 January 1840 at Conc 2 Lot 1, Cramahe Twp., Brighton, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Land Registry Records (B&S 7907) show that Thomas D. Sanford sold "part 1 acre, 1 rood, 33 pers., south east corner", of lot 1, concession 2, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co. to Isaac C. Proctor. ITS Date: Jan 23 1840. Reg'n. Date: Jan 29 1846. Sanford sold "pt 1/2 acre more or less ?20 West Young St." to Laura Proctor. ITS Date: Jul 23 1841. Reg. Date: Jun 12 1844. (Land Registry Records, Abstract Index Books, Brighton Village - Conc 1 Lot 1 - Northumberland County Archives, Cobourg Public Library.)4 He lived on 21 March 1845 at Village Lot 20, Main St. North, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Land Registry Records (B&S 7757) show that Thomas D. Sanford & wife sold one half acre, part of the front of lot 1, conc 2, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co. to John McAlease. ITS Date: Mar 21 1845. Reg'n. Date: Sep 3 1845. (Ontario Land Registry Records, Northumberland Co., Brighton Twp., Conc 2, pg. 005 of 317, page copied from OnLand.ca by Dan Buchanan, Apr 11 2020.)4 He lived on 3 June 1845 at Village Lot 53, Main St., North, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; Land Registry Records (Will 8103) show that the Will of Thomas D. Sanford Sr. granted "part lot 1 conc no set forth", lot 1, concession 2, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co. to his wife Julian Sandford. Reg'n. Date: Jun 8 1846. (Ontario Land Registry Records, Northumberland Co., Book 3, pg. 086 of 184, OnLand.ca)
Note: The records in Northumberland Book 3 only include a Registration Date. There is another record re a Will for Thomas D. Sanford in 1845, so I assuming these are the same Will or close in time. The ITS Date is always more important for family history purposes than the Registration Date. (Dan Buchanan, Mar 7, 2025.)4 He lived on 3 June 1845 at Village Lot 25, North of Main St., Brighton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; Land Registry Records (Will 8103) show that the Will of Thomas D. Sanford Sr. granted "part lot 1 conc no set forth", lot 1, concession 2, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co. to his wife Julian Sandford. Reg'n. Date: Jun 8 1846. (Ontario Land Registry Records, Northumberland Co., Book 3, pg. 086 of 184, OnLand.ca)
The records from Northumberland Book 3 do not show an ITS Date, only a Registration Date. That is really unfortunate for a Will like this, because it is very useful to know whan the Will was made. In this case, another record says it is a Will related to other property, so I am applying the same ITS Date to this record. (Dan Buchanan, Mar 6 2025.)4 He lived on 3 June 1845 at Village Lot 53, Main St., North, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; Land Registry Records (Will ?5103) show that the Will of Thomas D. (Ontario Land Registry Records, Northumberland Co., Brighton Village, Book 015, pg. 175 of 272, OnLand.ca.)4 He died on 7 May 1846 at Brighton, Northumberland Co., Canada West, at age 58; Date May 7 1846 per CemSearch.
Sanford granted "no land mentioned" in Village Lot 53, Main St. North Side, Brighton Village, Northumberland Co. to "his wife Julianne". ITS Date: Jun 3 1845. Reg'n. Date: Jun 7 1846. (Ontario Land Registry Records, Northumberland Co., Village of Brighton, Book 004, pg. 385 of 399, (Conc 02, Lot 01, Brighton Twp.), page copied from OnLand.ca by Dan Buchanan, Apr 7 2023.)4 He lived on 15 September 1845 at Conc 2 Lot 1, Cramahe Twp., Brighton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; Land Registry Records (B&S 7908) show that Benjamin Weller sold "1 acre, 1 rood, 25 perces", lot 1, concession 2, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co. to Thomas D. Sanford. ITS Date: Sep 15 1845. Reg'n. Date: Jan 29 1846.
