Daniel Massey

M, b. 12 December 1766, d. 5 September 1832
FatherDeacon Jonathan Massey b. 6 Jul 1747, d. 30 Mar 1830
MotherBetsey Woodbury b. 20 Aug 1748, d. 18 Oct 1819
Daniel Massey was born on 12 December 1766 at Salem, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire, U.S.A; Date Dec 12 1766 per CEMSearch. Date Dec 12 1766 & location Salem NH per GEDCOM of Dennis B. von Ting, Jan 24, 2003. per GEDCOM of James A. McKane, Oct. 4, 2005.1,2 He married Rebecca Kelley after 1786 at U.S.A; per GEDCOM of James A. McKane, Oct. 4, 2005.1 Daniel Massey "Daniel's Migration to Canada - To Watertownians Hart was a hero of discovery, but his brother, Daniel Massey, went much farther afield. With dauntless courage he headed for Canada. Just why Daniel alone of the twelve children came north is not clear. Perhaps the reference to a rift is correct - "the family (Massey) having split at the time of the Revolution, the tory branch going to Canada, and the Patriot branch swinging into northern New York". However the family continued on good terms, for the Canadian branch visited their relatives in U.S; indeed, some lived with them when attending school there. We note, though, that Daniel served with the Canadian militia in the 1812-1914 war, fighting against his own folk." pg. 3, "History of the Massey Family" by Marian (Massey) Nicholson, 1961, copy provided to me by Lawrence, Massey, Morganston, Ont. circa 1800 at Watertown, Jefferson Co., New York, U.S.A..3 He "Early Life in Haldimand Township - Daniel and his wife, Rebecca Kelley, stopped over in Watertown for part of 1801 and 1802 as they were en route to Upper Canada. There they settled on land "Third Range back from Lake Ontario in Haldimand Township, Massey at the age of 34, began another engagement in the long battle between the forest and the pioneers that had been waged all the way from the Atlantic seaboard". Our special interest centres around the sons Jonathan and Daniel who had come with their parents to Canada. Both held land north of Grafton, Ontario. Jonathan's Lot 32, Con. 4, Haldimand Twp. is still farmed by his great grandson Grant Massey and son Carman." pg. 3, "History of the Massey Family" by Marian (Massey) Nicholson, 1961, copy provided to me by Lawrence, Massey, Morganston, Ont. circa 1801 at Watertown, Jefferson Co., New York, U..A..3 He It is suggested that Daniel Massey and wife Rebecca Kelley moved from Watertown, NY to Upper Canada in 1802. That could be so, but evidence I have seen so far shows him to be living in Vermont as late as 1798 where his son Daniel is born and the Haldimand Census records first show Daniel Massey in Haldimand in 1807. His father, Jonathan Massey and a few others had founded a settlement at Watertown, NY in 1800; elder son Daniel could have come there with his family at that time and moved on in a few years to Upper Canada. I did not find Daniel Massey alone in the 1800 Census so not sure... Any ideas re the specifics would be welcome. (Dan Buchanan, Jan 2 2022) circa 1806 at Watertown, Jefferson Co., New York, U.S.A.. He immigrated before 1807 to Haldimand Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "Daniel Massey came to Canada with his family from Watertown in 1802 when he was four years old, and forty years later he owned a farm of over four hundred acres at Grafton near Cobourg in Canada West, with a large house, barns and cattle. Daniel and his father had paid for it by clearing land for sale." pg. 7 of "When I was Young" by Raymond Massey.
"The Massey's were United Empire Loyalists who came first to the Grafton area from Watertown, N.Y. in 1802." from newspaper article in Brighton Independent passed to me by Ruth McDonald, daughter of Willa McCann, whom, I had visited. The article is about Lawrence Massey and his book Aquadale: A Farm History 1869-2003". He "Daniel and Rebecca Massey are inspired by Jehovah early in the nineteenth century to move from Watertown, N.Y. to the Anglican-dominated promised land of southern Ontario. (The Masseys had originally come to the New World — to Salem — in 1630.) Their oldest son, Daniel, becomes a successful farmer." per a review of "the two one-hour programmes, The Masseys: Chronicles of a Canadian Family, produced by Vincent Tovell, himself the son of a Massey, " Saturday Night , September 1978 http://www.grubstreetbooks.ca/essays/masseys2.html before 1807 at Watertown, Jefferson Co., New York, U.S.A.. He lived before 1807 at Haldimand Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "Around 1802, Daniel Massey, along with his wife Rebecca Kelley and their infant son Daniel, traveled across the lake to Haldimand Township, near the village of Grafton. Here, he obtained 200 acres of land and began the process of clearing the forest and constructing a home. Today, this same farm is the home of St. Annes Spring Water. When young Daniel was 6 years of age, he was sent back to Watertown to live with his grandparents. Here he received some education and several years later he returned back to help work the farm with his father." from "The Massey Show; Celebrating the Massey Family and History; By Myno Van Dyke" http://www.ytmag.com/articles/artint241.htm. Rebecca Kelley

F, b. 1765, d. 3 January 1838
Rebecca Kelley was born in 1765; Date 1765 per Memorial - age 73 at death 1838. Date 1765 per GEDCOM of James A. McKane, Oct. 4, 2005.1,2 As of after 1786,her married name was Massey. She married Daniel Massey, son of Deacon Jonathan Massey and Betsey Woodbury, after 1786 at U.S.A; per GEDCOM of James A. McKane, Oct. 4, 2005.1 Rebecca Kelley There is a Wealthy Kelley who married Aaron Hinman, a resident of Haldimand Twp. very near Grafton. She was born in 1801 in Salem Twp., Rockingham Co., New Hampshire according to Hinman family history. This is the place where the Jonathan Massey family lived for a time in the 1790's before going to Watertown - and Daniel going on to Haldimand Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario. A large Kelley family (John, Sr. & Jr. James Sr. & Jr.) are in the Haldimand records very near the Massey's from the early years. Actually, John Kelley, Sr. is shown there in the first census record in 1803 while Daniel Massey first appears in 1807. It will be difficult to determine which Kelley family Rebecca Kelly, wife of Daniel Massey, belongs to but we can guess that she may be a sister or maybe a daughter of one of these Kelley men that came to Haldimand. This may explain why Daniel Massey, alone among the children of Jonathan Massey ( a Patriot soldier) came to Upper Canada rather than settle with the rest in New York state around Watertown. Being the oldest child and son and being married with a family of his own during the very diffcult 1790's, it is not unlikely that Daniel Massey and wife Rebecca Kelley decided to follow her family to Haldimand where they had learned good land was readily available. circa 1790 at Salem, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire, U.S.A.. Soon, neighbouring farmers would also bring their grain into the Massey barn and have it threshed. Since the blacksmiths in Cobourg and Grafton were some distance away, Daniel Massey built a small machine shop where he could repair not only his own machinery but his neighbour's as well. Vaughan, owned a small foundry and machine shop in the village of Bond Head, on Lake Ontario in Durham County between Cobourg and Oshawa. Vaughan was an acquaintance of Daniel Massey, likely through Stephen Vaughan who was married to Lucinda Massey's sister Cyrene. Stephen and Cyrene lived just south of Richard Vaughan's foundry. Richard Vaughan had to close the shop in 1847 and shortly after formed a partnership with Daniel Massey to use the building for manufacturing implements. Vaughan provided the building and equipment and Massey provided the money. Within six months, Massey bought out Vaughan's interest in the business and became the sole owner. He lived circa June 1800 at Watertown, Jefferson Co., New York, U.S.A; "The city of Watertown was settled in 1800 by pioneers from New Hampshire and Vermont, most notably Hart Massey, Henry Coffeen, and Zachariah Butterfield. These pioneers choose the area due to the Black River. The pioneers' vision was an industrial centre, which would draw power from the Black River. When the pioneers and their families arrived, they faced many challenges. All of the land was rough and unclear. Elevation was also a problem. The western end of the town was 12 to 15 feet higher than the eastern end, with a large depression in the middle. A small stream also passed through the town. In a few years, the area was cleared for a public square. [1]
A drop in the Black River at Watertown's location promised abundant water power for early industry. Watertown became the county seat of Jefferson County in 1805 and became an Incorporated Village in 1816. In 1869, Watertown was incorporated as a city. In 1920, the city adopted a city manager style of government." from Wikipedia, May 9, 2007.
