In 1891 he merged with "A. Harris, Son and Co" and other Canadian rivals to form MASSEY-HARRIS CO. LTD., of which he was president 1891-6. His son Walter Edward Massey was president of the business from 1896-1901. In 1953 the company merged with the Ferguson companies to form MASSEY-HARRIS-FERGUSON LIMITED, modified to MASSEY-FERGUSON LIMITED in 1958.
He inherited his father's sincere Methodist faith, along with his congenial, yet stern manner, and considered the business as a trust from God. The main structure of the building was preserved and condo structure was built inside it, reaching a floor above the old building. In the process the outside of the old building was reconditioned and made to look very good. To me it seemed like a fairy palace. The night after our arrival a first cousin of father's Frederick Isaiah Massey, cam to dinner. We called my "Fred Eye" and he was the European manager of the Massey-Harris Company. A big, handsome man who spoke very quietly, he had the most courtly manners. He was very nice to me. I had been allowed to stay up for dinner, and he told me storied of the American Civil War. As a Captain in the Union Army, Fred Eye had been wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg." from pg. 31, "When I Was Young" by Raymond Massey.
Note: I wonder if " .. a first cousin of father's .. " is correct? I have Frederick Isaiah Massey and his father as part of a different branch of the US Massey's, far too distant to be this close a relation. He is the right age to be in the Civil War and it is interesting that a Massey so far removed in terms of blood relations would be so high in the Company. More research needed here. in 1903 at London, England. He " ... The surgeon, Mr. Dean, in frock coat and tophat, arrived at the house and performed an appendectomy. .... He "Cousin Kat, mother's cousin, and her daughter Nan came to live with us when we returned in 1903. Nan was to keep house and Cousin Kate was to occupy the two big rooms that had been mother's sitting room and dressing room." ... and ... "Cousin Kate was then an old lady. Born Katharine Byard of Mobile, Alabama, she had seen the American Civil War, in which her fiance was killed fighting under command of Stonewall Jackson. She suffered the horrors of Reconstruction and the carpetbaggers and was now the widow of James Warnock, a Scottish Canadian who had had a tool-manufacturing business in Galt, Ontario. Galt was a long way from Mobile. In the thirty years she had lived in Canada, I don't think Cousin Kate had ever been warm in winter but she said our house was hotter than her own in Galt." from pg. 35, "When I Was Young" by Raymond Massey. in December 1903 at 519 Jarvis St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario.
