Mark "Murder in Port Hurton; The child wife of James S. Marks, a Port Huron barber, Murdered and her body thron into Black River; James S. Marks, a Port Huron barber, is now confined in the county jail upon the charge of murdering his wife, who was but 16 years old and who he had ruined and been compelled to marry only two months since, to save himsefl from stste's prison. The girl was missing last week Sunday night and three days later her body was found floating in Black River. Marks was immediatly secured and placed in jail on suspicion as he had at least two motives for the crime. He was forcecd to marry and continually quarreled with his girl wife. For second motive in the event of his wife's death property would go to him. Marks of violence were found upon the body and no water in the lungs, showing that she was killed and then thrown in the river. Marks was once before tried on the charge of murder as the followng clipping from the Port Huron Republican records. Marks ia a barber by trade, and for some years has conducted a shop near the American House, on Military street. This is the second time in his life that Marks has been confined in the St. Clair county jail upon a charge of murder. On the 7th day of September, 1876, he killed John Murphy, of the township of Kenockee, and Dec 18th his trial for murder was started, Alex. R. Avery then being prosecuting attorney, and C. R. Brown and B. C. Farrand appearing as attorneys for the defence. On the trial it was shown that Murphy was a much larger man than Marks, who was then but a boy of 18 years, and also that Murphy was the aggressor, and the jury believed that when Marks hit him with a club, inflicting the injuries which caused death, that he was acting on the defensive, and accordingly returned a verdict of not guilty, on the 21st day of December, 1876. Jacob P. Haynes and Dr. C. R. Hubbard were two of the jurymen who tried Marks and they assure the Republican that they are still of the opinion that Marks was justified in striking the blow, and that he had no intent to kill Murphy."
