He married Mary Richardson, eldest daughter of his uncle, Rev. Joshua Richardson on May 14, 1832, in Deerfield Township, Warren, Pennsylvania. They were the parents of six sons and 2 daughters: James Bradley(1833-1925); Joshua Hill(1836-1908); Sarah Lovilla(1839-1891); Mary Ann(1841-?); John Marsdon(1844-1863); Zachary Taylor(1847-1848); William Bates(1850-1884) and George Walter(1854-1944). He was a blacksmith, a farmer and for a time a lumberman in business with his two eldest sons. During John and Mary's marriage, they lived in Cherry Tree in Venango County and in Limestone, Deerfield, Enterprise, Titusville and Freehold - all in Warren County. After Mary's death, he married Lydia Brown Richardson, widow of his cousin, Benjamin Richardson, in 1869. John died on May 8, 1900 at the home of his youngest son, Rev. George Richardson, in Pittsfield, Warren County, at 87, of "old age". He was buried on May 11, 1900 in Lottsville (PA) Cemetery.
