In the eyes of the community, Frankie Simpson was no small man, he was a giant
Born at his Ontario Street farm in Brighton on January 7,1935, he grew up during the depression. This was not an easy time for them, says Brian Brose, Frankie's best friend. Like most people, the family struggled and Frankie did his best to make life easier. Despite his small size Frankie drove the tractors and rode horses bareback while cultivating crops. He always kept up to his bigger brothers. Frankie felt size didn't matter, but determination did.
For Frankie, no task ever seemed too large. Whether it was picking tomatoes on his parents' Ontario Street farm, or dedicating his life to the humble task of making others around him happier, Frankie rose to the occasion.
Frankie was best known for his involvement with two Brighton institutions, Pearsall Motors and King Edward Park.
"We picked up Frankie while he was picking tomatoes on Ontario Street. Frankie had finally talked his father into letting him work j at Pearsall Motors, which he was very grateful for. They used to laugh. Frankie, with his height was a great tomato picker," said Doug Pearsall of Pearsall Motors. "It was quite a bit more than an employee- employer relationship. It was a best friend type-thing, as far as I was concerned."
As the manager of parts and service at Pearsall's, Frankie pumped gas, sold and serviced cars and attracted many repeat customers to the business. His good nature and sense of humour always brought people back, even if it was more convenient to go elsewhere.
"A lot of people came to our dealership because of Frankie," said Pearsall.
In fact, after soon-to-be presidents of Chrysler Corporation, Mo Closs and Bill Hawkins, met Frankie through business, both men made it a point to visit Pearsall Motors for his famous service.
"They knew Frankie so well, and Frankie knew them. They would actually get a dollar's worth of gas up the road to get to Pearsall's so they could have Frankie look after them," said Pearsall.
Frankie talked to everyone. Local kids would make a point of walking past Pearsall's to see him.
"I know when we would walk to school, we would always see Frank there. Frank would always talk and joke with you," said Roy Rittwage, a Brighton councillor. "Frank was a local Brighton character that everybody knew. Hell of a nice guy."
But serving well-respected customers and jawing with the community was not Frankie's proudest moment.
In 1978 Frankie was awarded the Ontario Minor Hockey Association award for outstanding contribution to minor hockey over a number of years. The award was a highlight of his life and represented years of dedication to the community.
Frankie began managing the King Edward Park Arena in 1973. But he spent the majority of his time coaching and refereeing the hockey games. He did what it took for the kids to have fun and learn at the same time. For a while, they called him "Punch" after the famous coach of the 1967 Toronto Maple Leafs.
"Frankie did everything. He was a one-man team. He drove the Zamboni, made the ice, started the arena up every year and took care of the park," said Alf Greg, current manager of the King Edward Park facility.
Brian Brose met him through hockey when he was thirteen. As Brose grew older, they became best friends.
"Frankie took me under his wing when I was about thirteen. My dad had just died. I was playing hockey and Frank was my coach. He came and picked me up and brought me back home. He did that with lots of kids, not just me," said Brose.
Frankie was also very well respected as a key member of the recreation department
"He used to sharpen skates and kids would always be bugging him saying 'Frank, can I do this, Frank can I have this, Frank can you sharpen my skates?' said Rittwage. "If kids didn't have money to pay for the job, Frank would sharpen them anyway."
Frankie had a profound effect on the people around him. He is remembered by his friends for many good times. In their younger years, Frank and Doug used to drive his 1940 Ford into snow banks for fun.
"If it snowed real hard we would go out (in the car) with a couple of snow shovels. We would head for a snow bank and hit it real hard," said Pearsall. "We would always get it started again."
Later in life, Frank would invite his friends to "Frankie's Island" near Presqu'ile Park for old-fashioned corn roasts and campfires. Always a colourful character, his friends have many stories to tell about the events on the island; stories that, out of respect for Frankie, and the reputations of many of his friends, will remain on the island!
Frankie didn't let retirement from the arena change his social ways. Every morning, Frankie would meet a group of friends at a local restaurant for coffee. He bought himself a new Massey-Ferguson Tractor to grade driveways and cultivate people's gardens. Every Saturday, he liked to go to yard sales, even if it was only to haggle with a vendor over price. When he had a spare moment, Frankie might fix a friend's lawnmower or restore an old bike to give to a child.
As he coped with aging and the onset of lung cancer, Frankie still stayed strong and positive. After a four-year struggle with the disease, Frankie passed away in the Trenton Memorial Hospital.
"The last few days in the hospital he wasn't good, but he was very strong. He never lost his sense of humour," said Brose.
On July 28, at Frankie's funeral, people took the opportunity to share stories from Frankie's life. Frankie's impact on the community was evident. Trinity St. Andrews Church was filled to capacity.
"People responded well to him. All you had to do was go to the church to see. He filled the church at his funeral. Everybody loved him," said Pearsall.
Frankie's good nature will be missed greatly by the community and by his friends.
"He's going to be missed around here," said Brose. "I mean, he helped a lot of people. I know myself, I still go over to the island almost every day and just wander around." from article in The Independent by Kai Hulshoff, August 13 2003, copy in WI Archives, Batch 02 03 0045. on 24 July 2003 at Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario.2 He died on 25 July 2003 at Trenton Memorial Hospital, Trenton, Hastings Co., Ontario, at age 68; "As he coped with aging and the onset of lung cancer, Frankie still stayed strong and positive.
