(Dan Buchanan, Aug 9 2025.)6 He Florence and Olive are still in Brighton Twp. and Albert is not with them per 1901 Census. on 18 April 1901 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario.10 He "The Harry Orchard Story; The name of Harry Orchard is not known by many people these days, but during his lifetime of eighty-eight years he was responsible for the deaths of at least eighteen men.
Harry Orchard was born on a farm near Wooler on March 15, 1866. Little is known of his family. His grandparents on his mother's side came from Ireland, and his father's parents came from England. He was one of a family of eight, six girls and two boys. Harry was the second oldest. He had very little formal education, just passing through the third grade.
While living in Wooler he attended the Methodist Episcopal Church regularly, he was superintendent of the Sunday School and belonged to two fraternal organizations.
In the spring of 1888, he married a local Scottish girl named Florence. They started their own cheese business, working out of a rented factory on Lot 18, Con. 5 of Murray Township, on the Homer Leavitt corner.
Orchard's troubles really began to materialize at this point. He began short-weighing the farmer's milk and the cheese he sold. He gambled, often spending more money than he had. He got mixed up in political schemes for which he was almost prosecuted. Orchard was finally forced to sell the cheese factory to pay his debts.
He then secured a cheese factory three miles out of Wooler where he made cheese for a company, but the change in location did not change the direction of Orchard's life. In his own words, "here, the seeds were planted that grew into a terrible crop of misery, sorrow, suffering, and woe, not alone for myself, but for hundreds, perhaps thousands directly or indirectly".
One day Orchard went to visit an uncle who was a minister. Under the influence of religion, he thought he had found the answer to all of his problems. Although he promised he would live for God, he soon fell back into his old ways once he returned back home.
Following his conversion, Orchard managed to borrow enough money to build a new cheese factory in Hilton. During the construction of the new factory, Orchard boarded with a man who lived in Brighton, and in a short time he became infatuated with the man's wife. This gave him ideas, so he insured the factory for a large sum.
A few months later, after removing everything of value, he set fire to the factory, and collected eight hundred dollars from the Insurance Company. He and his new love then left their homes and secretly headed for Detroit, Michigan, and then on to Nelson, British Columbia. But his lady friend left him and went back home, after receiving a letter from her mother. Harry then went to Spokane, Washington.
He worked at various jobs while travelling around the United States for about two or three years. He then started working in the mines and joined a radical labour organization.
In 1902 he met a miner's widow and fell in love. She consented to marry him unaware of the fact that Orchard was already married. After his marriage he settled down a bit. He stopped drinking and gambling and it appeared that he was contented to live the quiet life of a family man.
The Union had different plans for Harry Orchard. He became one of their hired killers, travelling all around the country, disposing of anyone who used his power and position to fight the organizations' demands.
He committed many murders, but was finally caught and prosecuted on December 30, 1905. The ex-governor of Idaho, Frank Steunenburg, was killed by an explosion when he opened the gate in front of his home. Material which went into the construction of the bomb was found in Harry Orchard's hotel room.
On June 6,1907 in the courthouse at Boise, Idaho, Harry Orchard began a full confession. He testified for three hours that first day, speaking in a soft voice. The next day he was a bit stronger on the stand, confessing to all the crimes he had com-mitted: burning down his cheese factory in Hilton to collect the insurance; pitchforking his brother; running away with a married woman, and marrying a third woman, while still married to his first wife. He admitted carrying out eighteen murders and planning the kidnapping of a child. His testimony revealed the radical leaders who had hired him and helped to clear up many of the problems being experienced in the United States at that time.
The court pronounced the death sentence but because he had turned States evidence, it was changed to life imprisonment, yet he never served a day in prison. A small cottage was built near the prison where he spent the rest of his life. He was converted and became very religious, doing many good deeds during his last days. Such is the irony of life!
Information recently received reveals that Harry Orchard was born in the house now owned by Douglas and Vera Fox, on the Wooler-Codrington road. He worked as a farm help for quite some time for William Valentine who said that Harry was a good worker." "Harry Orchard" in "As the Crow Flies" by Leona Austin, page 189-191.
circa 1902 at U.S.A. He lived in 1904 at Idaho State Penitentiary, Boise, Idaho, U.S.A; According to his death certificate, he was in jail 50 years when he died in 1954. That means from 1904.3 He "On June 6,1907 in the courthouse at Boise, Idaho, Harry Orchard began a full confession. He testified for three hours that first day, speaking in a soft voice.
