He is discussing the Shannon House, which is possibly the oldest house in Prince Edward County, based on the theory that Joseph Monteney (different spellings) was a fur trader (which generation?) and built the building to protect the furs as well as to be a family home. circa 1810 at Marysburgh Twp., Waupoos Island, Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada. He "Joseph Montney, Jr. was born on an Easter Sunday in Mohawk Flats, New York, shortly after the Revolutionary War. There is evidence that he was wounded in the War of 1812 and that he immigrated to Canada in 1820, returning to his native New York almost 30 years later and operating a 125 acre farm for the next 16 years." from The Brothers Montney, by David Gillis, ThumbPrint News Columnist, date not shown. circa 1820 at Marysburgh Twp., Waupoos Island, Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada. He lived circa 1820 at Marysburgh Twp., Waupoos Island, Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; "He emigrated about 1820 from Waupoos Ontario, Canada." This is part of the notes in FindaGrave for Joseph Monteney, Jr. It shows that he was living on Waupoos Island and probably was married to Sarah Jane Smith there, with son George born there in 1826. Some confusion re dates here, but it clear places him on Waupoos in this time period when he and/or his father could have been conducting fur trading, and could have built the house that Alexander Shannon would move into in 1836.3 He married Sarah Jane Smith, daughter of Charles Smith and Eleanor Edwards, circa 1825 at Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; "Joseph and his wife. Sarah Jane, had 15 children, six boys and nine girls." from The Brothers Montney, by David Gillis, ThumbPrint News Columnist, date not shown. per family tree of Dupey525 on ancestry.ca, March 18 2020.2 Joseph Montney lived circa 1849 at Clayton, Jefferson Co., New York, U.S.A; "He immigrated about 1849 to Clayton, Jefferson County NY." from Note in FindaGrave.3 He died on 15 June 1883 at Memphis, Macomb Co., Michigan, U.S.A., at age 95; Date Jun 15 1883 & location Memphis, Macomb Co., Michigan per FindaGrave.
