It appears as if this is Thomas Stanton's cooperage. However, the same building is labelled "Garage and Repairs" in the 1926 Fire Map so maybe the cooperage moved. Certainly, Thomas Stanton was making barrels in Brighton until 1943, according the Brighton Business book. (Dan Buchanan, Dec 2020.) Note: Thomas apparently really wanted to fight in the war, since he lied about his age by a decade. He must have looked relatively young considering his actual age of 53. It also may reflect the need for men at that time, to consider an older man like this.¹² He On a form which has no year but I assume was filled out before departure for Europe, Thomas is asked how may children he has and he answers "Four ... one boy and three girls ... Alfred - 8, Maud - 20, Margaret - 13, Dorothy - 10" Considering that he and Ellen had 12 children in total, we must assume he meant the children who were living with him at home at that time - maybe??
