Mr. Hiram Wait was working on the west side. He stood on some boards placed on the ceiling joists, and was leaning over the wall to nail on the sheeting, when his foot slipped and he was pitched forward head first. In the descent he turned over once, and struck the ground, a distance of 12 feet, on his head and shoulders. The services were held in the M.P. Church, of which Mr. Wait was a member. The entire seating capacity of the building was taken up. The deceased came here from New York State in the fall of 1867 and settled on a farm in northwest Vienna. Date of Marriage may be based on Sophia who must be born c. 1773???1,5 George Wait appeared on the census of 1790 at Hoosick, Albany Co., New York, U.S.A; 1790 US Fed Census: George Wait; 1 male 16 and over; 4 males under 16; 4 females; Total 9 (1790 US Fed Census: Hoosick, Albany Co., New York, pg. 1 of 4, line 4 from top on left side. The Battle of Bennington of the American Revolution was fought northeast of Hoosick, on a farm owned by John Green,[6] in the community of Walloomsac. " from Wikipeida (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoosick,_New_York)
Note: The shape and size of this family does not match what we assume for George Wait who came to Upper Canada. I think we are mixing up two separate families. (Dan Buchanan, Sep 2 2023.)6 He immigrated in 1797 to Upper Canada; US & Canada Passenger and Immigration Lists Index: Name: George Wait; Arrival Year: 1797; Arrival Place: Canada; Primary Immigrant: George Wait; Source: 2060.17; Annotation: Date and place of loyalist oath of allegiance. Extracted from RG1, L7, volume 52B District Loyalist Rolls and Others, located at the Manuscripts Division of the National Archives of Canada in Ottawa. File number, district name, township name, and index; Source Bibliography: FITZGERALD, E. KEITH. Ontario People: 1796-1803. Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc., 1993. 250p; Household Members: George Wait (US and Canada Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, ancestry.ca)
Note: George is shown as the only immigrant in this family, or that is what it appears to mean. His sons married in NY and did not move until the 1810s. Did he come alone initially? Curious.4 He After collecting as much info as possible re George Wait and his family, it looks to me like he came to Upper Canada in 1797 all by himself. The immigration record suggests that, although it is hard to tell based on sparse info. What we do know is that he was alone for the 1803 and 1804 census. In 1806, he is seen with a female 16 to 60, which probably means he found a second wife in the Haldimand area, probably a widow of an earlier settler. The 1819 census changed a bit and began describing her as over 60, so we can estimate her birth as 1759, making her ten years younger than George. We can follow the census records to 1824 for both George and his female companion, so we can expect they both passed away around that time. There is no mention of her name in these records.
It is also important to note that the three sons who settled in Haldimand did not come with their father in 1797. They stayed in New York State and two of them got married there - Joseph and Samuel, while Garner got married soon after coming here. Joseph may have been here as early as 1810, and certainly by 1815. Samuel came in 1812 and Garner was here by 1810 when he married Lydia Mott.
I have found no evidence of any connection between the older three children, Sophia (if she belongs here), Enoch and Briggs, and the younger three. Makes me think we may be dealing with two families. It is hard to see how completely separate these two groups seems to be. It may be just the old kids going with mother and the younger ones with dad, but I expect there is more to it than that. Curious tho. (Dan Buchanan, Sep 2 2023) in 1797 at Haldimand Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada. He appeared on the census of 17 June 1797 at Conc 2 Lot 12, B Front, Haldimand Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "George Weight, lot 12, conc "2 B Front"" from "A List of Settlers in Haldermand Twp. (Haldimand) by Danforth & Greeley, agents for Keiler?, Council Office, York, June 17, 1797."

Note: The shape and size of this family does not match what we assume for George Wait who came to Upper Canada. I think we are mixing up two separate families.
Note: The date on the Memorial looks very much like Sep 17 1782 but the calculation re age makes it Sept 7 1782. We'll go with that.1,2,4,5,3 He married Mary Grace Draper, daughter of Moses Draper and Grace Hyde, on 13 January 1802 at Massachusetts, U.S.A; Date Jan 13 1802 per IGI Record. Both Sison Wait and Mary Grace Draper were from Massachusetts. Jun 19 1806 (Ontario Land Registry Records, Cobourg Archives, May 2011)
Note: I am placing this record with Sisson Wait because there is no evidence of a Cecil Wait in this area at this time. The name "Sisson" has been rendered in any form possible in records and this may be a case of a mistaken or uncertain rendering by an agent or registrar.
Note: It is also odd that there are not further examples of this name re this lot. All 200 acres are sold by James Norris in 1818. Maybe there was a Cecil Wait and he disappeared or did not take up the lot?? Any ideas out there??6 He appeared on the census of 1807 at Haldimand Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; 1807 Census: Sisson Wait; 1 male over 16; 1 female over 16; 1 male under 16; Total 2.
