Obituary: "The Late Joseph Pettet of Haldimand
Many memories of the past spring up in our midst as we stand around the open grave of our much valued and well-tried friend, Joseph Pettet, Esq., and as we take part in the solemn and impressive rites, we can hardly realize that our loved friend of over 34 years has passed away, and that his genial countenance will be seen on earth no more, - the intrepid pioneer and fearless Temperance advocate has succumbed to man’s grim foe, and like a shock of corn fully ripe, has been gathered into the heavenly garner.
Joseph Pettet was a native of Jefferson County, near Waterdown, N.Y. His parents were born in Long Island. He was born 16th August, 1808. When about 4 years old, his parents removed to Canada, and settled in the township of Haldimand. His wife’s grandfather was a Mr. Herriman, who was the first settler in the township of Hamilton, where Cobourg is now, then an unreclaimed swamp. In 1831, when he was 23 years old, he located on the present homestead, lot 10, con. 4, Tp. of Haldimand, where he has resided ever since. With a strong arm and brave heart, he manfully chopped his way through the primeval forest, and through difficulties and discouragements innumerable, he eventually succeeded in establishing a comfortable home.
In January, 1833, he married a Miss Wait, daughter of Sissin Wait, of Haldimand, his life’s partner for over 63 years, a faithful wife and loving mother.
He left behind him 4 children – 2 sons and 2 daughters – besides several grandchildren. Dennis Pettet, Esq., of Chicago, formerly Tp. Councillor. Dr. Pettet, of Chicago, graduate of Victoria College, Cobourg, Mrs. Tubbs, of Delina, Nebraska, and Mrs. Meredith, residing at the old homestead. He also brought up and educated Dr. Meredith, of Cleveland, son of Mrs. Meredith.
Though the natural loosing of the “Silver Cord,” and extra exertion, our friend was brought to the close of his long life’s journey, on Sunday 19th July. His last distinguishable words were “I am so tired, I want to rest” and shortly afterwards, surrounded by all his family, the weary wheels of life stood still, his freed spirit winged its upward flight, and he had gained his eternal rest.
On Wednesday, July 21nd inst., after a very impressive service in the house conducted by the Rev. J. Ross, assisted by the Rev. J. Lord of Grafton, we followed his remains to Eddystone church, attended by a very long procession of vehicles, testifying to the high esteem our friend was held throughout the entire township. After a brief service, we gently laid him down in his narrow bed, there to await the resurrection morn.
Such was the closing scene in the life of an upright man, of unswerving integrity, just and true in all his dealings, steadfast in his friendships and courteous to all. He was an unflinching Temperance advocate, boldly denouncing the liquor traffic in all its forms, his fiery denunciation of the rum fiend will be long remembered in the different Temperance organizations throughout the township.
His charity never failed, fulfilling the divine injunction “Given to hospitality.” On being asked if he ever locked his door at night, or on leaving him, he replied, “no, for some friend or stranger might come and want food or warmth.”
He was a staunch member of the Christian church, in Eddystone (organized in 1826), for half a century, and a Deacon for many years. He took a special interest in the Bible society, and took a leading part in circulating the scriptures he loved so well.
In politics, he was a life-long Liberal, not arguing with untampered zeal, but ever ready to calmly and intelligently discuss the great questions of the day.
Let us who are tending to the same goal, leave the same bright record behind that at our life’s close we may go down to rest, not as a sun in the darkening west, but like the morning start melting away in the brightness of heaven.
