The boarder between the newly sized Cramahe and the new Brighton townships was the lot line between lots 10 and 11. The water cascaded down the narrow valley, following the creek to the north-east, all the way to Cole Creek and eventually the Trent River. Lewis Shearer's saw mill in the valley north of Hilton was destroyed, killing Mr. Shearer and a helper, Jacob Herrington. This event is known in local parlance as "The Breakaway". The Stephens brothers, Alva and Daniel, had recently obtained parts of the south half of lot 5 from their father Richard, so, all of a sudden, their lake was gone. They sold to John Philp soon after. The water cascaded down the narrrow valley, following the creek to the north-east, all the way to Cole Creek and eventually the Trent River. Lewis Shearer's saw mill in the valley north of Hilton was destroyed, killing Mr. Shearer and a helper, Jacob Herrington. This event is known in local parlance as "The Breakaway". The Stephens brothers, Alva and Daniel, had recently obtained parts of the south half of lot 5 from their father Richard, so, all of a sudden, their lake was gone. They sold to John Philp soon after.
