"London Man Well Known in Kent County; Late R. C. Struthers was a Former Teacher in Dover; London - Nov. 19 - Robert Carlyle Struthers, who for many years was one of London's most prominent wholesale merchants, and who has been critically ill for some days, died at his residence, 508 Wellington St. at 12:15 this morning. Robert Carlyle Struthers had been a resident of London for 60 years and during that period had been vitally interested in its commercial growth. Born in the Township of Murray, Northumberland County, on December 2, 1834. He was the son of the late Lucy Ann and Robert Carlyle Struthers. His father was an inspector of schools and it was from him that the son derived the habits of study which served him so well in later life as much of his public school training was recevied from his father as from his teachers in the rural school. When the boy was quite young the family moved to Louisville, a small village in Kent near Chatham. The boy was sent to the Toronto Collegiate Institute, but soon returned home. Under the guidance of his father, he studied to become a teacher and when 17 years old acquired his first class teacher's certificate. he taught for two years in the Township of Dover and for two years more at different points in Kent County. In 1866 he decided to abandon school teaching and came to London securing a position as a cler for a local drygoods firm, subsequently becoming a traveler for the same firm. Thirty-five years ago Mr. Struthers started his own business which grew steadily, until on his retirement some years ago it was one of the largest and best known in Western Ontario. For many years it occupied the building on which The Advertiser is now housed. When Mr. Struthers retired the business was terminated. Mr. Struthers was one of the founders of the Western Ontario Commercial Travelers' Associatuion and for three years was its president. It was one of the few organizations in which he chose to take an active part. He was a Methodist and an ardent Liberal, and gave liberally of time and money to both causes. He never aspired to public office, but nevertheless had a keen interest in muniicpal and national affiars. Besdies his wife, two sons, R. C. and H. H. Struthers, survive Mrs. A.
