This reference is clear, saying that Alva Stephens had been living in Jefferson Co., NY before coming to Upper Canada. Also, it says he was born there too. This kind of thing needs to be confirmed. His family was in Otsego Co., much farther south. Jefferson Co. is on the Lake Ontario shore, which presented a simple step across the St. Lawrence Rriver to Kingston. Need to look into this. Note: Reproduction of these early pages are awful. The dates, in particular are a guess. Oddly, the first few instances of Alva Stephens show a very weird surname spelling - looks like Strand. A few lines below it becomes pretty clearly Stephens - not Stevens as we see in many early records. We do the the best we can. Note: It appears that Alva Stephens and Asa Werden simply swapped this land, first to Werden and then back to Stephens. Wonder what that was about?⁹ He There is no mention of Avla Stephens in any of the land registry records for Conc 1, Lot 6, (and nearby lots) South of the Bay, North Marysburgh Twp., which was the Stone Mills area at Lake-on-the-Mountain. It is all Peter VanAlstine and Richard Cartwright and mortaged and quit claims ... with G. W. Meyers holding mortgages into the mix. Whatever Alva Stephens did was small and on the periphery, likley renting or leasing to support his businesses. One historically notable resident of the valley who is buried in the cemetery is Alva Stephens, the man who named the hamlet of Cherry Valley. He died at the age of 99 and was buried with full Masonic honours. Stephens’ marble monument shown above was erected following his death in 1882 and bears the Masonic square and compass symbols. Alva Stephens came to the village of Cherry Valley between 1812 and 1815 from Jefferson County, New York. Stephens’ was a hatter by trade. He had three businesses at Stone Mills, now called Glenora. First a shop where he made hats, then a hotel located there and finally as owner and operator for the ferry between Glenora and Adolphustown. He and his wife Hannah Walker sold the property and moved to a farm on the shores of East Lake, today the home of the Wallis family and their Bed & Breakfast named “Away”. Alva and Hannah had 4 sons Orrin, Richard, Henry and Marshall and three daughters, (names unknown). Son Richard Stephens was prominent in Athol affairs and is said to have been the leading force in getting the township hall built. He was a scientific farmer specializing in hogs and fruit. The Cherry Valley cemetery opened as a churchyard burial ground in the early 19th century.
