| Father | Daniel Stephens1 b. Apr 1762, d. 9 Nov 1831 |

Alva Stephens was born on 3 April 1783 at Otsego Co., New York, U.S.A; Date Apr 3 1783 per Memorial - age 98y 9m 8d at death Jan 11 1882. Date 1784 per CemSearch. Date 1784 & location USA per Death Reg'n. Date 1784 & location US per 1881 Census. Date 1784 & location US per 1871 Census. Date 1788 & location USA per 1861 Census. Date 1784 & location Otsego Co., NY per family tree of Andrew Lucian Goffe on ancestry.ca, July 13 2021. Date Mar 13 1799 & location NY (Spelling Stevens) per family tree of teds69bird on ancestry.ca, July 15 2021. Location is Jefferson Co., NY per Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte.
Note: Alva Stephens' birth date is two years before the marriage date of Daniel Stephens and Zerviah Field. The info re Alva in Pioneer Life says he was born in Jefferson Co., NY and came from there to Kingston in 1813. Not sure if Alva is a son of Daniel although it is shown that way in sereral trees in ancestry.ca. I wonder ..... (Dan Buchanan, July 18 2021.)1,2,4,5,6,7,8,3 He "Although the Pioneer, as a matter of fact, held a commission in the American army, he must, it seems, have been out of sympathy with the desire of some of the Americans to follow up their advantage in the revolution.: per page 735 f Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte. circa 1811 at New York, U.S.A..8 He lived before 1813 at Jefferson Co., New York, U.S.A; " ... came over from Jefferson County, N.Y., where he was born ... " per page 735 of Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte.
This reference is clear, saying that Alva Stephens had been living in Jefferson Co., NY before coming to Upper Canada. Also, it says he was born there too. This kind of thing needs to be confirmed. His family was in Otsego Co., much farther south. Jefferson Co. is on the Lake Ontario shore, which presented a simple step across the St. Lawrence Rriver to Kingston. Need to look into this. (Dan Buchanan, July 17 2021.)8 He immigrated circa 1813 to Kingston, Frontenac Co., Upper Canada; "It was during the progress of the War of Defence, sometime between 1812 and 1815, that the pioneer of the Stephens family in Canada, came over from Jefferson County, N.Y., where he was bom, to Kingston. Coming from the States at such a time, and being suspected by the British military authorities of being in some, perhaps not desirable way, connected with the Americans, he, with a cousin of his—Calvin Pier—who accompanied him,
was—as a matter of course under the circumstances — commited to prison. Innocent of connivance or collusion with the Americans, the cousins were in no great state of consternation over their arrest. Before starting on their journey they had fortified themselves with passports from the American Government; and, besides, the Pioneer, at least, possessed a medal and official papers which gave evidence of his occupying high rank in the Masonic
order. This open sesame procured their liberation." per page 735 of Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte.8 He married Hannah Walker in 1814 at Marysburgh Twp., Stone Mills, Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; Date 1814 per 1861 Census. per CemSearch. "The Pioneer, who married Hannah Walker, had two sons— Orrin and Richard—who still reside in the township of Athol. Orrin, the elder of the brothers, lives near the old homestead, and is a successful farmer. He has never sought publicity as a man of affairs, but there is none more willing than he to do whatever he can to promote the good of the community. Richard, the younger surviving son of the Pioneer, has served four years in the council of his township; and Cherry Valley is in his debt for the interest he took in securing its town hall; he has been collector of taxes for four years in the township. He is a scientific farmer and a specialist in fruit and hogs. Two of the Pioneer’s daughters married into the Spafford family, and another daughter married Gilbert Clark." per page 736 of Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte.2,8,3 Alva Stephens lived on 19 April 1819 at Conc 1 Lot 5, South of East Lake, Athol Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; Land Registry Records (B&S 266) show that John Ogden & wife sold the north half 100 acres of lot 5, conc 1, south of East Lake, Athol Twp. to Alva Stephens. ITS Date: ?Apr 19 1819?; Reg'n. Date: ?Sep 3 1819? (Ontario Land Registry Records, Prince Edward Co., Athol Twp., pages copied from OnLand.ca, Book 26, pg. 167 of 282, pg 1, by Dan, July 15 2021)
Note: Reproduction of these early pages are awful. The dates, in particular are a guess. Oddly, the first few instances of Alva Stephens show a very weird surname spelling - looks like Strand. A few lines below it becomes pretty clearly Stephens - not Stevens as we see in many early records. We do the the best we can. An era of prosperity began at once for Alva; but, not content, he bought out a ferryman who plied between Stone Mills, across an inlet of the bay, to Adolphustown. His military training would enable him to see the importance of this point; equally important in times of peace for business, as in war from a strategic standpoint; for nearly everybody and everything that passed from Prince Edward County from east to west and vice versa went by this route. Still reaching out for an increase of business in whatever way it could be honestly achieved, he, about the same time, bought the only hotel in the village; and these three undertakings (providing a covering for the heads of the people, every one of them must be covered in some fashion, ferrying and feeding them, of which they stood in continual need), he carried on for many years, and in each occupation was signally successful." from page 735 & 736, Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte. circa 1820 at Marysburgh Twp., Stone Mills, Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada.8 He lived on 23 February 1821 at Conc 1 Lot 5, South of East Lake, Athol Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; Land Registry Records (B&S ?735?) show that Alva Stephens sold the north half 100 acres of lot 5, conc 1, south of East Lake, Athol Twp. to Asa Werden?. He died at the age of 99 and was buried with full Masonic honours. Stephens’ marble monument shown above was erected following his death in 1882 and bears the Masonic square and compass symbols. Alva Stephens came to the village of Cherry Valley between 1812 and 1815 from Jefferson County, New York. Stephens’ was a hatter by trade. He had three businesses at Stone Mills, now called Glenora. First a shop where he made hats, then a hotel located there and finally as owner and operator for the ferry between Glenora and Adolphustown. He and his wife Hannah Walker sold the property and moved to a farm on the shores of East Lake, today the home of the Wallis family and their Bed & Breakfast named “Away”. Alva and Hannah had 4 sons Orrin, Richard, Henry and Marshall and three daughters, (names unknown). Son Richard Stephens was prominent in Athol affairs and is said to have been the leading force in getting the township hall built. He was a scientific farmer specializing in hogs and fruit. The Cherry Valley cemetery opened as a churchyard burial ground in the early 19th century.
