Wed 65 Years, Death Does Not Separate; Mr. and Mrs. I.F. Selleck Pass Away Only Four Days Apart. Both Loved By All.
One of the saddest, and perhaps one of the most beautiful closes of life occurred in Vanderbilt just a little more than a week ago, when the death of Mr. and Mrs. I.F. Selleck, who had spent an entire lifetime union, closed within four days.
January 21, 1935, Mr. and Mrs. Selleck celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary at the home of their son in Detroit.
Adelaid Malory was born February 14, 1851, at Castleton, Northumberland county, Canada.
Isaac F. Selleck was born at Brighton, Canada, January 21, 1870, [sic; this is actually Adelaid and Isaac's wedding date. Isaac was born 08 Jan 1847] and in 1880 came to Michigan, where they lived a short time in Alpena, and came to Vanderbilt in 1886.
Five children were born to this union, one, Alice, passed away in 1899 at the age of 15 years. Those surviving are Mrs. H.A. Jacobson of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Abie Lester of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Maude Dagwell of Indian River, and William Selleck of Detroit. There are nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Selleck spent the winter in Detroit with their son, William. They returned to their home in Vanderbilt April 9. Mrs. Selleck had been in ill health for the past two years and had been confined to her bed since February.
She passed away at her home on Friday, May 17 at the age of 84 years. Funeral services were conducted in the Methodist church, of which she had been a life-long member, on May 20, Rev. David Shugg officiating. Interment was made in the Vanderbilt cemetery.
Mr. Selleck was taken seriously ill on May 7, though he had been well and robust for a man of his age. He passes away at his home May 21. Services were held in the Methodist church, May 23, Rev. Shugg officiating and his remains were laid beside those of his wife, who preceded him such a short time.
This venerable couple had many times stated that they hoped that when death called, it would take both together. Mr. Selleck did not know his wife had preceded him.
The death of these well loved pioneers of Otsego county has cast a pall of sadness over the entire county, who extend heart-felt sympathy to the children.
Out-of-town guests attending the funeral were Mrs. Maude Dagwell, Richard Dagwell of Detroit, Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher Dagwell of Detroit, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Selleck, Mrs. Colon Campbell of Detroit, and Mrs. Dell Sly of Cheboygan." per family tree of raudhan on ancestry.ca, Dec 21 2018. Per Death Cert.3

Note: Elizabeth Gibson married Josiah Wellington after her first husband Charles Selleck had died in 1809. She appears in census records as Widow Elizabeth Selleck as late as 1816. This would explain why she appears as Elizabeth Wellington in the 1861 and 1871 Census with her son Isaac M. Wellington.1,3 Josiah Dix Wellington appeared on the census of 1818 at Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1818 Census: Josiah Wellington; 1 male over 16; 3 males under 16; 3 females over 16; 1 female under 16. His father Joseph Wellington was a United Empire Loyalist and his mother previous to her marriage to Mr. Wellington was the widow of Captain Selleck."" from page 29 of The Tobey Book.
Note: Isaac Maitland Wellington (1821-1897) was the son Josiah Wellington (1780-1865) and Elizabeth Gibson, who had been previously married to Captain Charles Selleck. It is very doubtful if I. M. Wellington was the first white child born at Presqu'ile since families lived there from at least 1802. I. M. Wellington's Death Registration says he was born in Haldimand Township which may be possible since Josiah Wellington owned land near Grafton during this time.3 He appeared on the census of 1821 at Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1821 Assessment: Josiah Wellington; Presqu'ile Point, Lot 4, 2 acres cult. Built in 1816, the boat had 18 paddles in the wheels, each of which were forty feet in circumference. Mr. I. M. Wellington wrote of the commotion and excitement resulting from its arrival: "Although Grandfather had helped to build many a large vessel, yet he had never seen a steamboat. The old gentleman, hearing the noise, sprang to his feet, and asked what was making the noise; but when he got sight of the boat rounding Salt Point, making her way into the harbor and dropping anchor, he raised both hands above his head, exclaiming that the world was coming to an end, when we see a ship running without sails. In many days after, a hearty laugh did the young people have at Grandfather's expense over his first sight of a steamboat."" from page 40 of "The Municipality of Brighton", published in 2006.
Note: This is an interesting story but the text raises questions about this Wellington family. I. M. Wellington uses the term "Grandfather" here to refer the old sea captain at Presqu'ile. My research suggests that I. M. Wellington is the son of Josiah Dix Wellington and Elizabeth Gibson. This event takes place in 1825 when Josiah would have been 45 years old - not exactly "The old gentleman", it might seem. I. M.'s paternal grandparents are shown to be Joseph Wellington and Anna Dix; Joseph died in 1819, so it's not him. More likely he is talking about his maternal grandfather, George Gibson, father of his mother, Elizabeth Gibson. George Gibson was also a sea captain living at Presqu'ile Point and appears in Murray Township census records until 1825. in 1825 at Murray Twp., Presqu'ile Point, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada.5 He appeared on the census of 1825 at Presqu'ile Point, Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1825 Assessment: Josiah Wellington; Presqu'ile Point, 1 acre cult. Note: There are several records for Josiah Wellington in Haldimand Twp., including the place of birth of son Isaac M. Wellington. Are these all refereing to the same Josiah Wellington??? He lived on 14 June 1841 at Conc 1 Lot 1, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; Land Registry Records (B&S 6650) show that Josiah D. Wellington sold 24 acres of Lot 1, conc 1, Brighton Twp. Note: If this is the same Josiah Wellington, it means he owned land in Haldimand Twp. in 1850. The location of Conc 2, Lot 10 is part way between Vernonville and Wicklow. He appeared on the census of 1850 at Presqu'ile Point, Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; 1850 Census: Josiah D. Wellington; Presqu'ile Point, Murray Twp., occ., non-prop; Total Persons: 6
Note: This record is important because it is the only census record that uses the middle initial D - short for Dix, mother Ann Dix - which identified this Josiah Wellington as the fellow from New York State. The GEDCOM of Kaz does not show his middle name but does show his parents as Joseph Wellington and Ann Dix.1 He appeared on the census of 1852 at Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; Age 72 at 1851 Census: Wellington, Josiah, 72, b. Note: Is this the same Josiah Wellington as lived at Presqu'ile Point. The age and birth location all work as well as the fact this is the only 1851 Census records I have seen for him. In 1861 he is with his son John Wesley Wellington in Rawdon. Are there TWO Josiah Wellington's both born in US 1780 and in this same area?????
Note: These Fenton boys must be connected to Jane Wellington - her children??6 He lived in 1852 at Conc 1 Lot 1, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; Josiah Wellington does not appear in the 1851 Census in Brighton Township. His wife and kids do appear and Eliza Wellington is clearly shown as married - "M" and not a widow. The agricultural census record shows "J. Wellington" at Conc 1, Lot 1 with 1 acres. This suggests that Josiah Wellington is still alive but not in Brighton for the 1851 Census. In fact, he is with his son John Wesley Wellington in Rawdon Twp. for the 1861 Census.
Note: See 1851 Census record - is that this same guy???6 He lived on 7 September 1852 at Conc B Lot 33, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; Land Registry Records (Grant A100) show that John Nix Sr. sold 20 acres in the north west part of lot 33, concession B, Brighton Twp. to Josiah D.
US, EM, yeoman, married; Jane, 47?, b. US, EM, married; Fenton, Jas., 16, b. Cda., Bapt; David, 12; Edward, 11 (1851 Census: Percy Twp., pg. 16, line 38)

"June 25, 1897, tells the story of the first white child born on Presqu'ile Point, December 11, 1821, Isaac M. Wellington, son of Joseph Wellington." from page 15 of "Presqu'ile, Brighton Ontario" by Susan Bergeron & Bonnie Browne, 1994
Note(1): People had lived on Presqu'ile from around 1800 - or at least had lived and worked around there. I'd like to confirm that Isaac M. Wellington, born in 1821 would be the first white child born there. Seems like this need some explanation.
Note(2): Wondering where the info re Joseph Wellington being Isaac's father came from. The census records and several trees on rootsweb.com show that Josiah Dix Wellington (a son of Joseph Wellington) was the son of Isaac. Was there another Joseph I have no record of? In 1822 at Presqu'ile Point, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada.8 He lived circa 1825 at Murray Twp., Presqu'ile Point, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "The story of the town of Newcastle is most intimately joined up with the wreck of the vessel Speedy. In connection with this story two names stand out prominently. These are Captain Selleck and I. M. Wellington. Mr. Wellington gave the first account of the events surrounding the wreck of the vessel. The Brighton Ensign of June 25, 1897 spoke of this great historian: "On December 11, 1821, the first white child was born on Presqu'ile Point. That child was Isaac M. Wellington, the third soen of the late Joseph Wellington and Elizabeth Gibson Selleck.
I. M. Wellington's Death Registration says he was born in Haldimand Township which may be possible since Josiah Wellington owned land near Grafton during this time.9 He "In 1825, the "Frontenac", 170 feet long, with a maximum speed of 10 1/2 miles per hour, became the first steamboat to arrive in Brighton Harbour.
George Gibson was also a sea captain living at Presqu'ile Point and appears in Murray Township census records until 1825. in 1825 at Murray Twp., Presqu'ile Point, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada.10 He married Nancy "Ann" Wright, daughter of James Wright and Ann Harrison, circa 1845 at Northumberland Co., Canada West; per 1851 Census. per 1871 Census.2,7 Isaac Maitland Wellington lived on 2 May 1846 at Conc 1 Lot 1, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; Land Registry Records (B&S 8150) show that Charles Biggar & wife sold 3/4 acres of lot ,1 conc 1, Cramahe Twp. to Isaac M.
George Gibson was also a sea captain living at Presqu'ile Point and appears in Murray Township census records until 1825. in 1825 at Murray Twp., Presqu'ile Point, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada.10 He married Nancy "Ann" Wright, daughter of James Wright and Ann Harrison, circa 1845 at Northumberland Co., Canada West; per 1851 Census. per 1871 Census.2,7 Isaac Maitland Wellington lived on 2 May 1846 at Conc 1 Lot 1, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; Land Registry Records (B&S 8150) show that Charles Biggar & wife sold 3/4 acres of lot ,1 conc 1, Cramahe Twp. to Isaac M. An officer in one of the Loyalists' Regiments, he has been employed in recruiting in the Upper Provinces. He is a younger brother of Captain Justus Sherwood, Captain Meyers' former commander. By 1785, Samuel has established his post in the Lower Bay and there he has exchanged many goods and provided all manner of services for the settlers in that region. Now he has elected to conduct trade in the Upper Bay. Sandhurst, six miles west of Ernestown settlement is here his Lower Bay post has been located. As a merchant his business interrests have been varies. There he has run a general store, stocked trappers and hunters, traded in furs and venison, and operated a distillery, selling liquor in abundant quantities. His account book, to be kept over a long period of time, will contain most of the names of the prominent settlers of the entire Bay area. This store is to carry on many years of trade, dealing in every available type of provision, from Mohawk muggasins to fine fabrics, and all manner of services, from obtaining leather for shoes to the shodding of horses and oxen and the transportation of small machinery from Lachine, Quebec. Samuel Sherwood will pursue, in total, a remarkable twenty-five year career of dealing with other settlers in enterprises ranging from money-lending and the provision of farm animals for lease to the personal services of tailoring suits of clothes and many other customings fo the day." from "Hans Waltimeyer" by Jane Bennett Goddard, U.E., pg. 2249 & 250.2 He lived in 1789 at South Fredericksburgh Twp., Sandhurst, Mecklenburg Dist., Province of Quebec; "Of these people, Samuel Sherwood is the merchant who has operated an active trading post in the Lower Bay. The year of 1790 marks the historic date of the shipment down to Quebec by water of the first timber raft from the Bay of Kenty. Sherwood is soon to establish himself as a store-keeper in Meyers' Creek, but, before starting his business, his enterprise initially is to cut and lash a raft of timber, no mean feat, considering the immense size of the logs. From property drawn on the Bay shore in Sidney, he has cut his trees where they can be drawn by winch to the Bay shore. The raft is built in the Bay and chained together to form a large floating platform." from "Hans Waltimeyer" by Jane Bennett Goddard, U.E., pg. 284.2 He lived in 1791 at Front of Thurlow, Lot 9, Singleton's Creek, Meckelnbrug Dist., Province of Quebec; "The following are the names of those who settled upon the front, as supplied by the late G. Among his services are the provision of inn rooms, care of others' animals, the making and selling of shoes, furniture, clothes and farm implements, and use of draft animals; servants are available for hire by the day, including his male slave and his hired man. Samuel Sherwood will not have his business established at Meyers' Creek until this following year." from "Hans Waltimeyer" by Jane Bennett Goddard, U.E., pg. 284 & 285. circa 1785 at Sandhurst, Midland Dist., Province of Quebec.2 He lived in 1785 at Sandhurst Portage, Midland Dist., Province of Quebec; "Also in this same year of 1785, an ambitious Loyalist, Samuel Sherwood has come up into the Lower Bay are and has established a trading post at the Sandhurst Portage, a few miles westerly from Cataraqui, at the site of the important Indian carrying place northerly to Hay Bay.
