When the Harrises' family friend, Jacob Herkimer, left his trading post at Rice Lake in 1801, it was taken over by Joseph and Rachel Harris. Charles Fothergill made the following entry for Friday, 18 February 1817, in his journal: Set out on Horseback to find my way to Rice Lake. . . . After entering upon the lake, is 6 miles further to the log house where the widow Harris resides to trade with the Indians and which is situated in a neck of land [which became an island after the lake level was raised following the building of the Trent Canal] on the N. east side of the moouth of the [Otonabee] river which flows into the lake. . . . Sickness, poverty and death in this place lately gave all affliction in their power to the family now there —the recital has been affecting. . . . John Halbert, her assistant and a black man of the name of Tom who has lived all his life among the Indians, did all in their power to make me confortable. Rachel Harris and her family later moved to Crowe River in the Marrmora area where they continued to trade with the natives. A son, Charles, became a Hudson’s Bay Company factor at Lake Nipissing. The land grant of Rachel Sherwood Harris, as the daughter of a United Empire Loyalist, was located at lot 35, concession 5, of Hamilton Township, although she never occupied the property. The children of Joseph and Rachel were: 1. Mary m. Stephen Curtis 2 - Peter Thum, 3. John m. Mary Case, 4. Peter, 5. Charles d. 1835. 6. Alien Collingwood, 8. Charlotte.
