Being an ex-telephone operator, it seems one really never gets away from it. I worked in Brighton Township, Trenton Airport during World War Two, Trenton and then back to Brighton until dial in 1962. But enough of that, my story is concerning our neighborhood and the telephone service at the time of my birth in 1903. My parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Manley Spencer. We lived about one half mile west of the Stone School House S.S. No. 17 built 1865 in the fourth concession of Brighton Township which would be about three to four miles west and a bit south of Wooler. At that time there was a telephone at Mr. Wesley Montgomery's farm and it was connected to a telephone relay at Mr. William Wade's at which was known as Wade's Corners which is the site of the two service centres on 30 Highway north of Brighton at the 401 cutoff. Mr. Wade relayed calls to two or three phones in Brighton. The night I was due to arrive, my father went to Mr. Montgomery's to call Dr. Noble Dean in Brighton, but the telephone was out of order either between Montgomery and Wade's or between Wade's and Dr. Dean's. My father therefore had to go by horse and buggy seven miles to get the Dr. By the time the doctor arrived, I had arrived a littel earlier. My father obtained a franchise to build a telephone line from our house to my grandmother Spencer's house beside Stone School House. We had this private line (possibley about 1907, 8) before the Bell Agency in Brighton which was operated by W. W. Porte, built their telephone line through the countryside. Mr. Bert Fiddick installed our telephone and our central office was Brighton. Not long after that the Brighton Township Municipal Telephone Co. was formed and all rural lines that ran more than 2 or 3 miles out of the village was taken over by the municipal company. Our central office then was in Wm. Latimer's store at Orland. At one time we had two telephones in our farm kitchen. My grandmother passed on in 1913 but she never had any telephone other than our own little private line.
