(Zoa May (Phillips) Latimer, wife of William James Latimer, sent this postcard to her sister-in-law, Mary Margaret (Latimer) Armstrong, wife of John A. Armstrong. The Armstrongs had recently gone to Saskatchewan. The shop she is referring to may be the General Store William Latimer built in Orland and operated well into the 1930s. His son, Hugh Latimer, took the pictures of patrons to the store, resulting in what we call "The Latimer Photos", held in three albums which he donated to the Codrington Public Library. This post card was included in Album 3 with other pictures of Orland and Codrington. It is especially interesting because of is one of the only pictures we have found of the old Bethany Church. A note with the post card says that Hugh Latimer went to Sunday School in the Bethany Church and he recalls when it was moved to become the main part of the Codrington Unted Church in 1929. on 21 October 1907 at Brighton Twp., Orland, Northumberland Co., Ontario.7 She appeared on the census of 1911 at Brighton Twp., Orland, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Age 30 at 1911 Census: see William Latimer.2 She appeared on the census of 11 June 1921 at Brighton Twp., Orland, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Age 42 at 1921 Census: see William Latimer.4 She died on 1 April 1946 at Ontario at age 66; Date Apr 1 1946 per Memorial.3 She was buried on 3 April 1946 at McPhail's Cemetery, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Memorial: (See Exhibit) Mother; Zoa May; January 17, 1880; April 1, 1946 (McPhail's Cemetery, Brighton Twp., June 6, 2008)

A note with the post card says that Hugh Latimer went to Sunday School in the Bethany Church and he recalls when it was moved to become the main part of the Codrington Unted Church in 1929. on 21 October 1907 at Brighton Twp., Orland, Northumberland Co., Ontario.9 He lived in 1911 at Conc 4 Lot 34, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Residence per 1911 Census: Conc 4, Lot 34, Brighton Twp. - Orland.4 He appeared on the census of 1911 at Brighton Twp., Orland, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Age 37 at 1911 Census: Latimer, W. His father, William Latimer, ran a general store in Orland and Hugh took over when his father retired. The store also had gas pumps. Photography was a hobby for the young Hugh and he had customers stand in front of their car near the gas pumps so he could take their picture. These pictures are contained in two photo albums with one other album containing miscellaneous pictures of local villages. This set of three albums were donated by the Latimer family to the Codrington Library. There are several remarkable things about this collection. First, great care was taken to keep the names of the people with the pictures. The albums include an index. Second, these photographs are snapshots in time of regular workaday folks going about their business. Some pictures seem rather posed but the authenticity is evident. I also find these photos very interesting because many of my relatives are included. (Dan Buchanan updated 2017 01 29)
The questions of exactly who took all the "Latimer Photos" was cleared up for me by Cyril Peister, on January 12, 2013, at the 95th Birthday Party of Doug Goodfellow at the Codrington Community Centre. Cyril said that he knew the Latimer's in Orland and that the son, Hugh Latimer, was the one who actually took the pictures. He knew that the father, William Latimer, had operated the General Store in Orland in the first decades of the 1900s but that Hugh took over at some point. In any case, he insisted that it was the younger Hugh who was the photographer. This makes more sense, just looking at the ages of the father and son around 1930 when most of pictures appear to have been taken. Cyril said that he knew the Latimer's in Orland and that the son, Hugh Latimer, was the one who actually took the pictures. He knew that the father, William Latimer, had operated the General Store in Orland in the first decades of the 1900s but that Hugh took over at some point. In any case, he insisted that it was younger Hugh who was the photographer. This makes more sense, just looking at the ages of the father and son around 1930 when most of pictures appear to have been taken. Premier John Robart's victories in the 1960s." from email sent to me by Malcolm Montgomery, april 22 2015. in 1949 at Ontario.7 He "Hi Dan, Here is a brief biographical sketch of Hugh Latimer. Hugh Latimer (1910-1987) was involved in business and the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario between the 1930s and the 1980s. Born in Orland, Northumberland County, Latimer operated his family's general store there until 1942. Hugh was a staunch Baptist and an avid amateur photographer. Hugh Latimer became involved in politics at an early age. When he was eighteen, he became Chairman of the Brighton Progressive Conservative Association and, later, served as Secretary for the Northumberland Progressive Conservative Association. In September 1941, he began organising the party in Northumberland, Durham and Muskoka ridings. (My father Hugh Montgomery was living in Muskoka by this time and assisted Hugh Latimer in his efforts. They were very successful).
Hugh Latimer served his country during the WWII, achieving the rank of Sergeant in the 12 Canadian Field Security Section. Upon returning home from overseas service, Latimer acquired an interest in a lumber and a sash and door factory. However, after an accident in 1946, he started working for A.D. McKenzie, Chairman of the Organisational Committee of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party. Latimer eventually became McKenzie's assistant with responsibility for field organisation. When McKenzie died in 1960, Hugh Latimer succeeded him as Chairman of the Organisational Committee. Later, between 1971 and 1972, Latimer served as Executive Assistant to William Davis in the Premier's Office and, from 1975-1979, as Special Assistant to the first Ontario Ombudsman, Arthur Maloney. Matthew Sheffield Cassan and Thomas Cassan (1787-1815) are cousins. Thomas was killed at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. I am to understand that before Capt. Cassan whereas John Cassan (1745-1805) was Thomas' father. The parents of Joseph and John were Matthew Sheffield (1693-1760) and Christian Walsh (1719 - ).
